637.0. "Help with the Stableford System" by AUNTB::STETSON (Rick Stetson @WKO) Thu Jun 08 1989 00:21

    HELP!!!!

I'm overseeing a golf league for WKO (Winston-Salem, NC) and have
    a major problem.

We've played for a couple of years now using a variant of the
Stableford scoring system. This evening we had a match which ended
in a tie with Stableford points.

Can someone out there PLEASE tell me the official way to break ties
with the Stableford system? It appears that the easiest and most
straightforward approach might be to go hole-by-hole and the first
winner of the first hole is the overall winner.

This is a critical match so all informed advise ASAP would be
    apprreciated!

    All advise welcome!

    THANKS!!

    Rick

PS: It's assumed that if you DON"T know the Stableford system you
won't reply. I need informed replies only. If a discussion of
the Stableford system is required, please start another note and
I'll be more than willing to reply.

I think the usual approach would be to compare the final 9 holes.
If there's still a tie, then go to the last 6, if there's still
    a tie the last 3.

If it's just a 9 hole competition then obviously you can't look
    at the last 9.

637.2Relevant R & A RuleRUBIK::SELLPeter Sell UIA/ADG - 830 3966Fri Jun 09 1989 05:2016
I can't say what should happen in the US, but what the R & A has
    to say about ties is:

    "33-6. Decision of Ties

" The Committee shall announce the manner, day and time for the
"decision of a halved match or tie, whether played on level terms
    "or under handicap.

" A halved match shall not be decided by stroke play. A tie in
"stroke play shall not be decided by a match.

By my reading, you as the Committee can decide on any manner of
breaking the tie, and you can do that even after the match.

637.3Results and a software requestAUNTB::STETSONRick Stetson @WKOMon Jun 12 1989 11:4018
What I ended up doing was going back to the card in question and
used the 'who won the first net hole' concept. We had a Stableford
LPGA tourney in nearby High Point, NC this past weekend and I think
that's what they used to break ties in the early rounds.

Also, our friends at IBM provided the computing resource for that
tournament. They had some buggy software that caused problems in
the early rounds. Anyone out there have a similar piece of software
to compute scores on the Stableford system? I've checked the entire
conference without success, and thought I'd ask here. I'd prefer
BASIC or C for either the VAX or PC, but beggers can't be chosers.

All replies to my request are appreciated, and any help on the
    software is appreciated in advance.

    THANKS!!

Simple......count back from the last hole.

That is if 18 were played which team had the highest score on

that hole, if this hole was tied go to the 17th and so on.

We use the stableford system here a lot and this is the way

    	we split equal scoring rounds.

    good luck
    Luke
