633.0. ""HISTORY/GOLF/TV"" by USMFG::TGLASS () Thu Jun 01 1989 12:35

    HI,
    Found this most interesting set of facts in this month's GOLF DIGEST
    that you might enjoy/ponder over.

    1.The first US Open telecast was at the St. Louis Country Club in
      1947 with only a few TV's in use at the time.
    2.The Baltusrol US Open of 1954 was the first one(1) sent out on
      national broadcast.
    3.The 1965 US Open at Bellerive was the first shown in color and
      the last televised by NBC.
    4.Since the 1966 US Open at Olympic, ABC has been the network
      telecasting all US Opens.

    You can see the great leap forward in coverage, understand the techno-
    logy changes and possibly remember watching the US Open on an American
    made TV! Can you also remeber where you where at these times?

633.2"TEMPLATES and FAVORITES"USMFG::TGLASSThu Jun 01 1989 16:256
    P.S.
    Someone ought to develop a "Nicklaus template" that both covers
    the years of his majors and this TV/US Open history tale.
    Think that such a template would vividly depict Jack's "ownership"
    of golf during the years that his "template" covers!

633.3"THE BEAR ROARS ON @33 OPENS"USMFG::TGLASSFri Jun 16 1989 13:357
    Well, the GOLDEN BEAR is playing in his 33rd. U.S.Open and is only
    49. He also had a very good opening round at -3.
    I for one will be rooting for him to not only make the cut, but
    finish high and even challenge the winner!
    Many of todays competitors were not even born when Jack played in
    his first Open.
