My advise is that you go to a pro shop or club maker that has
demo clubs to try. Take a few that look good to you out to the
range and decide from there. People can offer you all the advise
(some true and some bull) in the world, but unless you try the
clubs (with various shafts and swingweights etc.) you just won't
know what is best for you...

| Re 603.1: RIGHT ON! That is absolutely the only sensible way to
buy clubs, plus, if anything goes wrong later, you'll be dealing with
someone who will "make it right" with the manufacturer. Go this
route one time, spend some bucks, and you'll never be sorry!

| i agree with the two previous noters but i'm sure you already knew that
and what you are looking for is suggestions on what clubs others
like to hit as a starting point. so in that spirit i hit taylor made
metal woods and i think they may offer what you are looking for. the
club head on the three and one wood looks to be average size i mean
they don't look small to me. the sweet spot is large and an easy club
to control. i could never hit a one wood until i got these clubs and
the loft is 9.5 my old wood was a 11 or 12. the 5 wood club head does
look small but i like it it just took a while to get used to.

| After watching some of the Memorial on ESPN yesterday a comment
was made that Ben Crenshaw just changed to metal woods. I'm not
sure as to the reason he decided to change after playing with persimmon
for so many years but I think it had somthing to do with rain
and the Masters. FYI he was using a graphite shaft during the telecast.
Guess Stanless steel is here to stay.

My partner will be on my case but I will now publicly admit
that he was RIGHT for the last 5 years !!
My darling wife bought me Spaulding metal woods for xmas and I
now swear by them ! I fought going to metal for years, I guess
it was the principle. Although the first day at the driving
range this spring I was ready to break all 3 clubs ! But once I
adjusted(I also went from medium to stiff shafts) my swing I am
hitting the ball straighter and longer than ever. My partner
says I will be totally awesome when the weather warms up and
the balls carry better(I'm hitting 275+ yds. now) !!
so as they say in the Olympics "go for the stainless" !
ace.... anyone interested in a set of Executive wood woods cheap?

603.6 | Stiff Shafts vs Medium? | MORO::WHICKER_BI | | Fri May 12 1989 11:52 | 9 |
| re: 603.5 I'm also thinking about going with a stiff shaft in place
of the medium I'm now using...to eliminate some of the bobble at
the top of my backswing, I currently have to shorten up the backswing
path, which doesn't seem natural but helps me to keep the clubhead
on the right swing path...I'm told that going to stiff shafts will
help get rid of this bobble...any input?

BW, if you do a dir/key=shaft you will find some info to help answer
your question...

603.8 | to stiff, or not to stiff ? | FRAGLE::STUART | tee many martoonies | Fri May 12 1989 14:37 | 18 |

I would say that the stiff shaft has made a big difference in
my consistency! I am 6'3" 195 lbs. I'm told I have an agressive
swing. With medium shafts I would slice, then hook, then fade,
then hit one straight !?! With stiff I am keeping the ball in
the fairway plus getting more distance !(a dream come true!)
I too shortened my backswing last year to gain control but
lost 25 - 35 yrds on my woods.
I'm now having trouble with my irons which I used to hit well !
I'm wondering if I need stiff shafts on them too ?
golf ! what a game ! I love it !!
