Does anyone have more info on possible new course to be located in Sterling/Lancaster? It was in the Worcester Telegram back in February that a Stow Acres owner and another person were attempting to purchase a large tract of land (near the Duck Farm in Sterling) for the purpose of a municipal golf course. But not much more has been said than that since. Any info appreciated.

All the P&S agreements have been signed with projected ground breaking in the late summer or early fall. The lease on the Duck Farm matures on July 1st. The farm is suppose to be razed in the summer. The current plans has the COuntry club on top of a hill that overlooks Mt. Watchusett. The course itself is suppose to be a par 72 championship course. One hole is plus 600 yards. 13 holes are located in Sterling and 5 in Lancaster. THe last I heard was that 9 holes will be open next year. The remaining 9 the year after. THey're suppose to import all the sod from North Carolina so make certain for a 1990 opening. The last bit of news is not good; all of this may be postponed depending on what happens with the prime rate. Paul

Paul, thanks for the update. Is the intent still to have the course open to the public or is it going to be private ? Ken--

Plans for the Sterling CC & golf course are final. I guess there were some major problems back in the early summer months, like the whole deal was off, but the developers restructured the plan and are just a month away from ground breaking. It appears that they 'downsized' the course abit and delayed the opening to mid 1991. I certainly don't see how they could pull a 1990 opening at this late date. But, at least, they're going through with it. The club will be semi-private. I think they're actively looking for new members. I'm not sure what the membership fee will be or what it includes but I plan to attend a meeting which will discuss all the facts. I'll post more info when I get it. The meeting is open to the public. It'll be held next Tuesday, the 19th at 8 PM at the Leominster Sheraton Hotel. Bob Lobel will be master of ceremonies. If anyone wants furthur details, write to; Sterling Country Club P.O.
