554.0. "Braintree Area Course Suggestions" by SLIST1::TATUM () Thu Mar 16 1989 16:03

I will be in the Braintree area in April and am looking for course
    suggestions in this area. Suggestions?

    Thanks.

554.1 Braintree MunyIAMOK::OCONNORFri Mar 17 1989 12:066
Braintree Muny is on route 37 behind the Braintree Mall. It is a
short but trickey course with fast greens. It will be wet but I think
that you will enjoy it. Fees are around $17 or $18. Call me (DTN
    273-5387) when
you plan to go. Maybe I will be able to join you. Rich.

554.3How About These?SLIST1::TATUMTue Mar 21 1989 16:0213
Answering my own note, I got the member club list from the Mass. Golf
Association. They highlighted the following courses:
    	Braintree G.C.
    	Brookmeadow C.C.
    	D.W. Field G.C.
    	George Wright G.C.
    	Green Harbor G.C.
    	Locust Valley G.C.
    	Presidents G.C.
    	Ponkapoag G.C.
    	Rockland G.C.

CAN ANYONE OFFER OPINIONS (POSITIVE or NEGATIVE) ABOUT THESE COURSES?
554.4George Wright is a GemDINSCO::BURKEJeff BurkeTue Mar 21 1989 16:4826
Brookmeadow can be challenging, especially from the gold tees. The course
is fairly flat and has large greens. Don't stray your tee shots or they'll
get tangled in with the roots of the many trees outlining each fairway.
And there are probably four or so water hazards. The last four or five
holes look very similar. The course is usually very wet in the spring.

One course not mentioned on the MGA list, but is the sister course to
Brookmeadow is Norwood CC (both are owned by the same person). The courses
are both flat and wet in the spring, but the condition of Norwood is
far less than Brookmeadow. Norwood is fairly short (read: easier) and
the air traffic from Norwood Airport on the back side can be distracting.

George Wright is a classic, Donald Ross designed course. Since Bill Flynn
took over course management responsibility there has been a remarkable
improvement in the condition of the course. As is typical with a Donald
Ross design, there are many blind tee and approach shots. Lots of hills,
bunkers and uneven lies. Expect a real challenge. I played there on
Saturday and was pleased to see they rebuilt many of the tees with sod
and railroad ties. The course is a real winner, but the best part is
the price -- I think it is $12.00 or so.

Ponkapoag has two courses that are managed by the MDC (problem #1).
I could be wrong, but I believe they have also been designed by
Donald Ross. The courses are very interesting, but they need some
serious work (starting with the tees -- a pet peeve of mine). You
can't beat the price of $7.00 (last year)

    George Wright:
I'll have to agree with the previous note concerning G. Wright.
It's an interesting layout with many challenging holes. A definite
must play. Because of the many blind shots, it is advisable to
play with someone who has played the course previously. The best
      of this lot.

    Ponkapoag:
The #1 course is an interesting layout that I would recommend
if the course conditions were not so poor. D. Ross designed
9 holes on the course when it was originally laid out. These
holes are split between the two courses now.

    Braintree:
      Tight, much water. Recommended.

    Brookmeadow/Norwood:
Flat and straight (for the most part). Boring.

    Green Harbor:
Easy layout. Plush conditions. (friends opinion)

    Presidents:
Some challenging holes. See Ponkapoag for conditions.
(I personally don't like the course though many people do.)

    D.W. Field:
Never played there, but have heard through friends that it's
      a nice layout.

    Enjoy,
    Dan

Locust Valley is located in Attleboro, MA. I am surprised that
this course was the only one listed in the Attleboro area, if the
list extended that far from Braintree.

The Attleboro area has about 6-8 public courses, and some private
as well. I think the town of Rehoboth has 5 courses alone. (Rehoboth
    is next town over).

Anyway, Locust valley is a challenging nine hole course. Has a couple
of *tough* holes. Has two relatively easy par 5's (not that any
hole is easy for me). Can usually get out with a limited wait, as
it's not heavily played. Cost about 12 bucks... maybe more this
    year.
