520.0. "collections-collectables-etc..." by ENGINE::WARFIELD (Gone Golfing) Sun Feb 05 1989 08:17

The discussion in a previous note prompted me to start this one. I
collect caddy books and bag tags from courses that I play. I am curious
who else is a collector and what you collect?

Good topic. I'm an avid collector of score cards. I guess I cheat
because I have some from courses I didn't play, but you can't play
them all. (You can try). Its to the point now that people just
bring them to me, knowing I collect them.

520.2Gee, when I look at all the stuff I have...DINSCO::BURKEJeff BurkeMon Feb 06 1989 10:1112
I have various bag tags, hats, sweaters, shirts, and score cards.
This past summer I bought a pewter TCC US Open bag tag that is one of my
favorites.

I have my grandfather's Bobby Jones signature irons (2-9) with
laminated woodgrain over steel shafts. I have my father-in-law's 1950s
vintage MacGregor Eye-O-Matic persimmon woods (1,3,4).

And I guess I've been unconsciously collecting drivers I can't
hit and putters that don't seem to work for me...

520.3I totally forgot about clubs.EUCLID::WARFIELDGone GolfingMon Feb 06 1989 12:1514
Thanks Jeff, I forgot about clubs.

I have 3 drivers, and 4 putters. The putters all
work I use one or the other depending on conditions.
(Actually one putter runs in streaks, so I don't use
	it I'd rather be consistent.)

I am still kicking myself because I sold my Wilson
Staff's to help pay for my set of perimeter weighted
clubs! In another 10 years they would have been
	collectors items.

I collect any item from a new course I play, e.g., visor, caps,
    towel, ball marker, etc.

My pride are a couple of caps from two pro-courses in Japan, and one
bag tag from the Royal Golf Club of Hong Kong.

and hats of the courses that I play. My hat collection numbers

I collect old clubs (Macgregor and Wilson) and love to swap (!!!),
in case any of you are interested. I also collect shirts and bag
tags (as well as some scorecards) from "shrines" I have played.
My personal rule of thumb is, "if you haven't played it, you can't
wear it"; however, that's just a device I use to motivate me to
play "shrines". After all, half the fun is working to get on 'em.
I understand that others collect in the pure sense, so I intend
no offense to them with the above.
     LET'S HEAR FROM THE SWAPPERS!

520.11Collectable or AntiqueAKOV12::ROBBERTZMon Feb 20 1989 13:4923
I picked up a club this weekend and I'm not sure if it is worth
anything. I'm going to start with the note here as a collectable
and maybe it will find it's way into the antique category or the
    dump.

The club is a left 2 wood with a persimmon club head. The best I can
make out now is the name Wrighter ____on and under this autographed.
It has a hexigon metal shaft and an oversized grip. The shaft length
is equal to the standard driver of today.

In the developement of clubs what year did they move to the metal
shafts ? If anyone has any information on the club's age and value it
    would be appreciated.

Is there added value in reconditioning old clubs or are they to
be left in their original condition. Is there a Golf collectable book
    that anyone can recommend ?

    Golf Digest + $1.00 = $5,000

Congradulations to Bob Charles - the man can putt, oh can he putt

520.12BPOV02::R_TURNERTue Feb 21 1989 14:5236
I keep the score cards only from courses that I have played.
Unfortunately, all my cards from the West Coast from 1952 - 1957,
were in a suitcase that was stolen at the airport in Chicago.

While looking through them the other night, was able to observe
that inflation has really hit the green fees. For example, on
Aug 5, 1957, and Aug 28, 1957, at Memorial Golf Links and Franconia
Golf Course, both in Springfield, MA, the green fees were $1.00.
I don't remember the courses being too great, or if they are still
there, but the prices were right.

Another interesting point is that I have cards from Canada, Wisconsin,
Michigan and Connecticut (the oldest from 1953), that have the 6"
Stymie measure. I know the Stymie rule was dropped in 1951, however,
I first caddied in 1939, started playing in 1940, and don't remember
    ever seeing the stymie used.

I also have an old "buggy whip" shafted driver. It's called Limber
Golf Shaft, Patent # 1662712, Jim Thomson Inc, Tarpon Springs, Fla.

It has no face insert, does have metal sole plate, the shaft is
constructed similiar to a split bamboo fly rod, wrapped in "linen"
    thread and varnished or lacquered.

I know Jim Thomson vied with Sam Snead, and others, in late 30's
and early 40's for long drive honors. I did write to the Golf
Collectors Society, however they could not give me any information.
I have hit the club on ranges and the ball really flies.

I also have my 1957 Top Flite irons, 2 thru 9, an early 1950's
Bulls-Eye Putter and a Matzie Velvet Touch putter from the same
    period.

Will look through the rest of my "junk" and see what else interesting.

520.13A little more on Western Mass.SA1794::WELLSPEAKHe's old...and his skin is cold...Tue Feb 21 1989 15:208
Franconia, in Springfield Mass., is still there and operational.
It's a decent course, and I think greens fees are around $10.00
during the week, and about 25% to 40% higher on weekends. Thats
pretty typical of western Mass. courses. Most range from a low
of about $8 for 18 holes, to a high of about $15 during the week,
and from $10 to $20 on Weekends and Holidays.

520.14The Ghost of George Wright?WAV14::MURPHYRFri Feb 24 1989 14:1424
    re: .11

I am not familiar with any of the particulars other than the (possible)
    manufacturer of your 2 wood.

A few years ago I came across a set of woods with regular mild steel
shafts that bore the stamping/engraving of Wright & Dittson on the
crown. I believe that this might be the company that made the club
    you are talking about.

The shafts on my clubs were not hex or square. I would think that
you clubs came from the 1930's. The hex shaping gave the
club shaft the strength needed in those early days of club shafts.

I believe the 'Wright' in Wright & Dittson is the same George Wright
for whom the George Wright Golf Course (near Boston) was named.

If the Golf Collectors Society can't offer any help you might contact
    the U.S.G.A. for information.

My opinion about refinishing these - perform repairs as necessary
(tighten, re-wrap, etc.) but refinishing ruins any value.

Let us know what you find out.
520.15Wright & DittsonAKOV12::ROBBERTZThu Mar 02 1989 09:2917
    re: -1

I contacted the U.S.G.A. and spoke to the curator Janet Segal
    (201) 234-2300. She was able to give me a little background
on the club and the company. The company Wright & Dittson was
founded by George Wright the former Baseball player from the Boston
area. The clubs were made for Wright & Dittson by Spalding and
eventually became the spalding line. The began making clubs under
the W & D label as early as 1920. With the metal shaft the club date
is placed in the late 1920's.

She was not able to give me a estimated value but placed it between
a wood shaft W & D and a round metal shaft club. The hex shaped
shaft was an experiment to give more strength to the metal shaft,
something a player gave up in the move from wood.

I will hold on to it for now. Thanks to .-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well...the tale starts with a grocery store index card.

    	Golf clubs (macgregor)
    		$5
    	Need cleaning

So I called, and wound up buying. A set of MacGregor Eye-o-matic
tourney clubs. 2-9, SW and 1-4 woods. Plus about ten other assorted
clubs including an ancient looking Otey Lorisman(sp?) putter.

The Mac Gregors seem old. The Irons say

"Tourney Colokrom" and "rec. M85" and have two yellow stripes
with a brick red stripe in the middle on the plastic thingy above
the blade. They are quite rusty on the bottom and have a dark
brown or copper colored section on the blade face.

    the woods say:

"MacGregor Eye-o-Matic tourney", "Oil Hardened", "rec. no. M75W"
and are black with natural face and a section with two white stripe
above an below a brick-red part on the face.

All of the clubs need work especially the woods, but none seem too
damaged. The shafts are also a bit rusted. The grips are dark
    maroon and black striped leather.

    My questions/requested advise:

    1) are these clubs valuable? IE how far should I got to restore them?

    2) do they need to be re-gripped? The leather is in pretty good shape
I think I could just work some mink-oil or saddle soap into them.

    3) Should I just use a little steel wool and some "never-dull" on the
    blades and shafts?

    4) are the woods persimmon?

Thats about it...oh yeah, I also got an aluminum Ajay Golden Bear
cart thrown in...it works fine but the tires have split, can new
    tires be gotten?

    Thanks,
    /Dino

Whether you should refinish depends purely on whether or not you
want to save them as an investment or use them. These clubs are
from the 1950 era which are highly sought after clubs. I would
save them as collectibles. If you do save them as collectibles
then they are worth more in their original condition (not refinished).

If you decide to use them then you should invest what you need to
to get them to the club that you want. For example, the irons (M85)
are stiff shafts and the woods (M75) are medium shafts (regular).
Depending on what you prefer, you might want to make them all stiff
or all regular shafts. Also I prefer rubber grips but that is all
    preference.

    The woods are persimmon.

As with any collectibles, they are only worth what someone else
will pay for them. Any way you look at it you got a great deal.
I would bet that you would be able to get $250-$300 for the irons
and $200-$250 for the woods. It all depends on their condition
and that is impossible to tell through a notesfile.

Congratulations on a nice find. I am always looking.

I bought an old driver over the weekend with the hope that I might
be able to hit it, or barring that, it might actually be worth
something. Well, I can't hit it! So to the second option, is it worth
    anything?

The markings on the club are as follows:

    	- on the top of the clubhead, in line with the sweetspot is
    		a Walter Hagen signature
and below it the letters WHA (in capitals)

    	- DRIVER is inscribed on the soleplate

    	- it has a large black insert held in place with four screws

    	- the shaft is steel, and looks like it has a brown plastic coating

    	- there don't seem to be any steps in the shaft

A rather poor refinishing job has been done on the head.

Any information or general comments would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Just received the latest Jeff Ellis antique catalogue. There are
many very interesting and 'costly" items in this issue.
He tells of being at the Christie auction in Glasgow where one
    rake iron went for $90,000!
Should anyone wish to receive his publication, he is at:
            P.O. BOX 843

Good luck hunting for auld irons at flea markets!

Note 240.0 Question for club collectors 3 replies

I know there are a couple of classic club collectors in this notesfile
and I have a question for you. I recently took in a Robert Jones
Jr. persimmon driver. I'd like to know if this club is potentially
worth any money. (I believe that it's a Spalding authograph model)
The strange thing about it is that the insert is concave (as opposed
to convex) but the clubface has a 10" buldge. I assume a new insert
is in order but then again you never know. Also the autograph is
an engraving not a decal. The other strange thing is a 3 screw
insert pattern (2 on the top and 1 on the bottom of the "sweet spot")

Any possiblities of worth here? Should I just repair it and get
    what I can for it?

    				Thanks

The shaft is steel (forgot to measure the steps) with nothing unusual
or different than any other club. There are no markings or labels.
The grip looks like a plastic allegator skin. It appears that the
club has been "worked on" by someone who didn't know or care what
they were doing. Also the soleplate is aluminum not brass. It's
like a sideways butterfly (rotated 90 from today's clubs).

If it's really not a worthwhile club it will make good plugs.

I have had for some time an old driver called:
           Limber Golf Shaft
           Pat # 1662712
           Jim Thomson Inc
           Tarpon Springs, Florida

The club head appears to be persimmon, has no face insert, does
have a sole plate with the above information.

The shaft appears to be made similiar to a split bamboo fishing
rod in that, when looking at butt end of shaft, you see an
approximate 1/4" square piece of wood surrounded by three other
odd shaped pieces that, when interlocked, form a round shaft
about 3/4" on diameter. The shaft is wrapped in, probably, linen
    thread and then varnished.

The grip is leather and appears to be original.

The shaft is very limber, almost in the class of a buggy whip
for any out there old enough to remember.

I wrote to Golf Collector's Society in Shawnee, Kansas but they
could not give me much information.

I am at BPO2, DTN 296-3417 if anyone wants to reach me.

Hickory shafts went out in the late 1920's, so just because they are
not made anymore may make them collectable!
A whole set of the same type may be of value to someone, sometime.
There is a whole set of collectors that buy/sell/trade such items and
even hold a yearly Hickory Hacker golf outing. This year they are in
    Florida.
    Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I saw some new wooden shafted (they may have been hickory) highly lofted wedges

I don't remember the price, but I do think they were labelled as a commemorative

801.4 saw the metal loaded, hickory shafted clubs that are manufactured
by Callaway. These are truely "NEW TECHNOLOGY".
I play a custom made driver that has a celluloid covering over a True
Temper shaft to simulate hickory. From afar it looks as if I am using a
hickory club, but I know I,m not using one!
First there was hickory, then tubular steel wrapped with celluloid and
then the step down shafts we know now. There even was a period when the
    shafts were made of aluminum.

    Re. collectibles...

A friend of my son-in-law's took up the game this summer, using
a set handed down to him by his father. The kid (recently married
and scuffling financially) also got a subscription to Golf Digest
as a present, and occasionally glanced at it. One of the aricles
that caught his eye recently was the one about "The Ten Most Expensive
Putters," which described putters of particular interest to collectors.
Looking more closely at the putter in his bag, he was dumfounded
to see that it was one of these: "Wilson, designed by Arnold Palmer,"
with the same model number as in the article.

To make a long story short, he wound up selling the putter for a
cool thousand, using the money for livingroom furniture (and,
one assumes, a new, less costly, putter). I guess the moral (if
any) is: check those old castoff clubs carefully before you give
    them away!

520.41"BALLS are also VALUABLE"CSMADM::GLASSTue Oct 31 1989 15:429
Just as mentioned in the 801.6 item by Frank, always check the older
    bags for balls.
One was found a few years ago that was worth over $5,000.
I always turn the bag inside out since that event happened.

By the way, the Lord of Latrobe(i.e. Arnold Palmer) is reported to
have 4,000 putters in his basement shop. Wonder what the total value
    might be?

There are a couple of guys who have written books on classic clubs -
Tom Wishon and Joe (forgot his name, but I've got both books) - but
I've never seen Medallions mentioned. I've got a set of 'em (3-PW) in
    mint condition.

I've brokered some classic deals, and my advice is to swap 'em ASAP
for a TOP GRADE set of new clubs - no marginal stuff. 4-PW is virtually
impossible to "fence" normally, and I think the guy is outsmarting
himself - unless he has a buyer (and you don't have one, from what I
infer). Don't wait for one to come along, because there are only a very
few sets of classics that are worth anything - and no matter what a
"book" says, you still have to find a buyer.Jump on this guy before he
wakes up and smells the coffee. These clubs are fairly tough to hit
    anyway.

Chick Evans was one of the great amateurs of his time, which roughly
coincided with Bobby Jones. He was from the Chicago area. I believe
that the Evans Scholarship, which goes to select caddies (if you can
find any) and is the charity that benefits from the Western Open, is
named after Chick (and might have been started by him.

Sorry for the sketchy details; it's been a while since I've read my
golf history books.

As to the value of your book, I know even less. I would think that it
it would be worth something, but who knows. I know I'd LOVE to have
it, but I don't have much to spend...

Anyone have advise on what I should do with these?

All of these clubs have wooden shafts - appears to be hickory.

Do you mean you intend to throw these old clubs away? If so, set some prices
for them and try to sell them to someone who would want to preserve them
from the dump. Yes, I'm interested. Send me e-mail if you don't want to
post prices.

I've found a new owner that is into collecting clubs.
They will not get thrown into the trash. It doesn't appear that they have
much worth from the initial research but I'm glad they will be going to
someone that can appreciate them.

520.59MacGregor Copper Faced Irons.ROCK::ROCK::SMITHWed Mar 30 1994 16:0930

I am looking for any info on antique clubs and values.

I have a set of MacGregor Copper faced clubs that I purchaced at
an antique store about 10 years ago, and got a good price I think.

Anyway I am looking to get some new clubs, 90's technology and all
that stuff. So I am curiuos as to whether or not these clubs are
really worth anything. I have been told MANY times that they are
worth some money $$$. But, No one has ever handled me any cash so
as far as that goes they are only worth what someone is willing to pay.
The best offer I have ever gotten was to exchange club-for-club for
a new set of Maxfi Tour Models (I think that is what they are
called). But that involved mailing the clubs and waiting for the
new clubs to be mailed back and I just did not trust the situation.
The persons father worked for Maxfi, so he was getting the clubs cheep.

So, if anyone has any info or can point me to a person, publication,
or group that would have the information, I would be most appreciative.
I would like to get several opinions if possible.

The details of the clubs are:
    MacGregor Copper faced irons 2-SW
On the heads is stamped/written Tourney Colokrom REC. M75
                                     Pat. No. 163961
The grips are original leather. Red and Black "barber pole".

Any info or pointers would be appreciated.

    Mike,

I belive that those irons are considered "classic" clubs. I have been
told that they are worth $300-500 in good condition. They were sold in
the early 50s. Be careful not to mix them up with a newer version of
Colorkromes that were sold in the 70s, I think. Have some one who is a
reputable dealer in antique golf clubs give you an evaluation.
    Good luck,

    Rich
