507.0. ""GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS FOR GOLF"" by OURVAX::GLASS () Mon Jan 23 1989 16:29

    Hi,
    Good news for golfers and bad news for Wilson!!!!!!!

    General Electric is suing Wilson for the use of GE at the end of
    the 1200 iron title. Wilson has agreed to put GEAR EFFECT on the
    newer production items and offset the suit. In the meantime, Wilson
    will offer the 1200GE irons at a very attractive price!

507.1lawsuits = free advertising??MAMIE::GORDONTue Jan 24 1989 09:143
    sounds like they're trying to generate revenue or advertising because
    I have a wilson 1200GE metal wood that is at least 5 years old....
    So after all this time why the law suit? = revenue/advertising...!!
507.2speaking of lawsuitsDCSVAX::MCCARTHYTue Jan 24 1989 10:467
    speaking of lawsuits, did anyone happen to read in the Herald on
    Sat that Spalding is suing Acushnet because of patent infringment
    on the surlyn cover and if Spalding wins the case Acushnet could
    go out of business? Wouldn't that have a major effect on the golf
    world?

507.3titleist still #1 ball in golf!!WILKIE::GORDONTue Jan 24 1989 16:343
    I was under the impression that E.I.DUPONT owns all the patents
    reguarding the surlyn covers used in golf balls....?????

     I believe that the practical legal matter is that if another company
     tried to use the GE trademark and GE sued them the other company could
     prove that the trademark was no longer valid if GE knew about a prior
     infringement and didn't prosecute.

Re: A couple ago about Titleist going out of business if they lost
     their suit.

     So what would the pros play?
