489.1 | easy way, good set | BIMINI::FOX | | Wed Jan 04 1989 16:40 | 16 |
| Nevada Bob's gives good prices you can find better but sometimes
its not worth the effort to try to save $. As far as clubs go I
have a set of Wilson 1200 GE's that I used until I bought my new
Pings this year. When I have friends visiting and we play golf I
let them use the Wilsons. Most of my friends that don't have clubs
just started the game. They almost always say they really like the
clubs and want to buy them. The set has a large sweet spot and are
easy to hit. I think I paid about $360 for the set
including the 1-3-5 wood metal.
Also to get the correct fit you should know your husbands height
and shirt size long sleeve for lenght of club for him or give him
a gift certificate and he can go in and be fitted. If you want to
spend less perhaps other people can tell you about replica's but
I don't know how much effort you want to go through.

| If you can find a golf discount store, that is not a bad place to
go and purchase equipment.
There is one on route 20 near Lake Williams Pizza in Marlboro, MA
and there was one in Framingham behind the Ski Market on route 9.
I'm not sure about the one in Framingham (it may have moved AGAIN)
but the one in Marlboro is still there.

489.3 | Better be Careful | BREAKR::BENEDICT | | Wed Jan 04 1989 20:14 | 26 |
| Just thought I'd let you know how an ol' hack views buying someone
else golf clubs. If your husband is an occasional golfer, then
you can find some really good prices on new clubs, like Shamrock
as he won't be able to tell the difference for the first year or
two regarding the quality. If he plays alot and is serious about
improving, I would recommend that you look into a good used set
as they sell for about 1/3 - 1/2 what you will pay for a new set.
FYI, I don't think I would want anybody to buy me golf clubs (gift
certificate would be nice) as golf is a mental game and if you don't
like the way a club looks when you address the ball, you may not
be able to hit the clubs very well. As the previous note mentioned,
the persons size, arm length, strength, swing (upright,regular or
flat) club weight, club flexibleness (flexible, regular, stiff),
etc, etc. should be considered.
I've also heard that Nevada Bob's is expensive. You may want to
try a golf course pro shop that carries used sets. Also look in
golf magazines like Golf Digest for advertisements (like Shamrock
if your husband just wants a new set). Anyway, before buying you
should talk to your husband to find out if he really would rather
pick them out himself.
Hope this helps,
Jim

489.4 | Closeout!! | MJOSWS::FAGLEY | beat the resident | Thu Jan 05 1989 09:41 | 17 |
| Austads new catalog is out. I was leafing thru it and found a
great deal on the same clubs I currently use. For about $280 you
can purchase 8 irons AND 1,3,5 woods in Dunlop Red Max clubs.
I have been using them a while now, and two of the people I play
with have replaced their clubs with this model. I've seen the
irons alone sell for $500 in various catalogs and pro shops. This
offer is a closeout from Austads. If you want more information
send me E-mail.
P.S. As a word of caution, you really should check with your husband
and see what he would like to have. Let him have input in your
decision.
P.S. Again. Also see note 69 there are some great prices on some
nice clubs advertised there.

| If it's anywhere close to where you work or live, check out the
Wayland Country Club pro shop, on Rt 27, just east of the Sudbury
town line. They have new and used clubs, and their prices tend to
be very competitive. Plus, they could probably help you figure out
what's okay for your husband. Better call first to make sure what
the hours are (they're open year-round, I'm pretty sure).

489.6 | New England Golf in Marlboro | SLSTRN::GOULD | | Thu Jan 05 1989 13:46 | 23 |
| I just took up the game, and Santa was kind enough to let me go off
and select my own clubs. A fellow employee and avid golfer suggested
the New England Golf Supply which was mentioned in an earler reply.
So off we went to their store in Marlboro in the Lake Williams store
complex near the Court House.
My friend helped me select a MacGregor Jack Nickalaus DX set of
wood and Irons. The manager whose name is Rick , I think, was very
nice and when I mentioned I was from DEC he through in a dozen balls
and a set of head covers and said he would love to do more buisness
with DEC people.
He was going to talk to the owner about a DEC discount and I am
susposed to check back with him and will post that info.
At any rate my friend has been a golfer for 20 years and is a scratch
golfer and said the deal was great.
So for what it is worth you might try there.
Hope this is some help.
Roy (who is looking forward to Spring.....I think!)

I would drive to Marlboro if the discount is worth it!
In the EATS notes file there is an story about an owner talking
to one of his customers about all the business he got from good
notes in that file.

| Is this the New England Golf Supply chain? They have a store
in Salem, NH and if a discount can be drummed up, have them pass
it along to the Salem store. There certainly are enough DEC plants
in Salem to make it worthwhile.
Looking for new metal drivers some tax return time.......

Another suggestion: Spags, the warehouse store on Rt 9 in
Shrewsbury. They don't have a big selection, only about 4-6 models
and no choise of lies, etc, but if you want to settle down for what
they have nobody beats the price. I remember seeing there a set of
Spalding Cannon (which is a good set) for about $50 less than Nevada
Bob's.

489.11 | Sometimes you can beat Spags Prices | DSTEG::SOUZA | What is this you call Q.T.B. | Mon Jan 09 1989 11:58 | 10 |
|
FYI - When I was looking at clubs last spring, New England Golf
Supply had the same price as Spags did and since I got them in NH
(Salem) I saved money by avoiding the sales tax. Also, I got a
discount for paying the full amount with Cash or Check when I got
the clubs, (no credit cards). I think that was another 5 percent.
So althought Spags and New Golf Supplies had the same standard price,
New England Golf Supply came out to be about 10 percent cheaper.

I've only been to Spags once, but that's because it's about a

of Clubs, and would appreciate it if somebody who frequents Spags
could post an Inventory here of what brands/models Spags stocks!
thanks,

| Keith,
We (NI0) do most of our business with Salem's N.E. Golf Supply
and they generally give us a discount (10-15%).
At the end of the year when we buy our league's banquet items,
they take off 20%.
If you're buying from them, I would tell them you work for
DEC in Salem and they should give you a break.

489.14 | Spaulding Executives | BAGELS::MATSIS | | Tue Jan 10 1989 14:00 | 14 |
| Does anyone play with Spaulding Executives? How do you like them?
I just started playing golf this fall and LOVE the game. I am looking
for a good set of clubs that I will not grow out of in the next
year or two as I get better. I don't want a beginners set.
One of the womens set I was looking at was the Spaulding Executives.
New England Golf Supply sells them for about $289.00. I thought
I saw them at a country club for around $500.00. They also have
a great sale at the end of the month. Buy one set of clubs and
get the second set for half price. This is a great deal since my
husband and I are both looking for a set of clubs. We'll save about
$150 to $200 on their already low prices.
Thanks, Pam

Keith,
You can mention Pudge's name (Ron Paradise) since he was our
league president last year and did all the buying.
I was president the year before, but there was a different owner
at NEGS then.
The new owners know who Pudge is.
Good Luck,
Art
p.s. Don't be afraid to remind them that we spent over $1000.00
for our banquet prizes in October '88. (our league and Gene
Kelley's combined, and shopped the same day)
Good Luck,

| Richie, who owns Seacoast Golf in Hampton and Manchester is a friend
of mine and has regularly given good deals on clubs and supplies.
More recent was Taylor metal woods for below $ 100.00, burner model.
You may be better off by going up to Seacoast and talking directly
to him. I have compared prices on a couple of things, notably Maxfi
Balata balls, and his prices are cheaper. Let me know if you would
like me to talk to him.

for about $300 at New England Golf Supply. How do/did you like them?
Any comments?

489.19 | Nomads are OK | MJOSWS::FAGLEY | beat the resident | Wed Jan 18 1989 13:59 | 6 |
| I used a set of ping lookalike Nomads for one round. They were
graphite shafts and played real nicely. If you want an inexpensive
club with some quality they are fine. A set of irons (8), steel
shaft, shouldn't cost more than about 175$ though.

489.20 | Wilson K28's? | EPIK::DEFELICE | | Fri Jul 31 1992 16:21 | 13 |
| I recently inherited a full set of WILSON K-28's from my Dad. The
clubs are in excellent shape and are 'light years' better than the junk
I was using. (I'm not cheap, I just starting playing again after a
14-year haitus. My Dad, unfortunately, had to give up the game.) I
realize these clubs are more than a few years old and wondered if
anyone else had any experiences with them. I like the irons a lot, but
I would have liked most anything compared to what I have been using.
The question is, will I like something much more compared to these?
So, should I put new grips on these or spring for a good used set of
something like Pings?
I'm curious, the irons have to be more than a few years old but look
very much like Lynx... How long have cavity backs been around?
|
489.21 | | USCTR1::NAHEARN | | Mon Aug 03 1992 14:08 | 14 |
| It might depend on just how old they are, but my last set of irons were
Wilson K28's......and they were not high on the Wilson quality list.
I played very well with them....I'm about a 15 Hdcp., and broke 80
twice with them......but no longer use them. I paid around $125 for
the entire set NEW about 10 years ago!!! I'd be interested in taking
the 6 and 7 irons off your hands if you decide to get something else!!!
That's one of the main reasons I bought a new set of clubs......seems
over the years I misplaced a club or two!!!
Regards,
Nelly

489.22 | Used Pings for sale? | EPIK::DEFELICE | | Mon Aug 03 1992 14:15 | 6 |
| Thanks for the info... My Dad didn't use the clubs very much at all as
he stopped playing about 8 years ago. It's a full set, but I'm using
different woods.
Anyone out there upgrading to Zing's and selling their Eyes? Black
right-handed would fit me well?

these (3-p) on sale for $249. Is that a reasonable price? Thanks.
