487.0. "A new season cometh!" by ENGINE::WARFIELD (Gone Golfing) Tue Jan 03 1989 13:48

	I know some of you still haven't given up on the 1988 golf season.
	However some of us who are adverse to the cold and the snow have
	put away the clubs until next season. However it is that time of
	year where the first few positive signs that golf season will return!
	(though still several months away)

	My leading indicators:
	- The arrival of golf related gifts under the tree,
	- The days are getting longer. It must not get dark until
	  almost 5:00 in the GMA.
	- Televised golf returns in force in the next couple weeks.
	  (The globe sports TV magazine lists a tournament practically
	  every week. You may need cable for some of them. But every
	  true golf fanatic got cable years ago if only to watch the
	  Thursday & Friday rounds of the majors).
	- Inside the PGA Tour returns to cable next week.
	- My wife is starting to talk about early spring vacations in
	  a warm climate. (She knows my prereq's, a good course & a round
	  a day).

	Has anyone else noticed the positive swing towards the start of
	a new season? What are your leading indicators?

	Larry

487.1I shake......DACT6::DEADYTue Jan 03 1989 15:0410

    While traveling to/from work "my car" vears towards snow free courses.
    My hands get "that feeling".
    A 40 degree day feels like 70 degrees.......

    				the days are getting "longer" ;-)

487.2Santa's a WOMAN!NPOGRP::GARYTue Jan 03 1989 15:2514
    Howdy,

    	I have started thinking in terms of the coming season, prompted
    mostly by the questionaire the league sent out. It got me to thinking
    though, in about a month it will be time to hit the indoor range.

    	Santa didn't do much in terms of golf except the promise of
    "some golf magazine". I can't complain, she was very generous toward
    one of my other hobbies.

    	Fret not, the new season will be upon you before you know it.

487.3Why wait til Spring !!!AKOV12::MULLINTue Jan 03 1989 15:4716
    The new season has started !

    I played @ New Seabury down the Cape on New Years Day. The course
    is still in good shape and the greens ,although frozen, still held
    and the putts rolled without the frost heave effect I was expecting.

    The temperature was in the mid 40's and with the sun out it made
    the difference.

    Started and ended with a birdie. Not a bad way to start the new
    year !  38 for 9 holes.

    I hope the rest of the winter down the Cape is as mild, I'd do it
    again.

487.4needs golf, badly...32214::BURKEJeff BurkeTue Jan 03 1989 16:2217
I haven't played since the day after Thanksgiving, and it's been
killing me.

On Thursday, my neighbor went to visit his wife in the hospital (they are
the proud parents of new twins). When he came home his babysitter said: "I
think the guy across the street is crazy -- he has been swinging a golf
club in his living room ALL night."

On Saturday, while my 2 year old son was sleeping (I was playing Mr. Mom),
I took a dozen balls out in front of my house to the grassy cul-de-sac. I
proceded to tee the first ball up (aiming towards a wooded area) when a
different neighbor drove by, waved, and as he drove past I noticed him shake
his head.

The folks on my street think I'm nuts. Hey, when you are a New England
golfer, eight *good* months isn't enough...

487.5Watching My Husband Suffer....ATSE::LEHRERTue Jan 03 1989 16:345
    My husband is suffering from the golf DT's, too. Every time we go
    through the basement to go outside, I catch him either eyeing his clubs
    or giving them a loving stroke. If it weren't for his upcoming trip to
    Orlando in March, he'd probably end up in an asylum by the end of
    winter.  Poor baby!
487.6The trek beginsMJOSWS::FAGLEYbeat the residentWed Jan 04 1989 11:318
      Played 21 holes on Dec 31 although the greens are closed.
    Unfortunatly, it looks like a long road back to the 80's. I
    hadn't played for three weeks prior and couldn't get comfortable.
      The new season has basically begun for me with the Dec 31
    outing. Obviously the season will begin with hours on the heated
    range. The real tune-up comes in Fla. the end of February.

487.7Deranged???IAMOK::OCONNORWed Jan 04 1989 16:518
    I played December 26th at Brook Meadow in Canton and New Years Day
    at the old Wareham C.C. in Buzzards Bay. Played 27 and finshed with
    a birdie. I am still driving my wife crazy chipping, putting and
    swinging the driver in the living room. (Ala Jeff Burke). I plan
    to play (somewhere) on Sunday the 13th, weather permitting.
    If anyone is interested in teeing off along with me, give ma a call
    at 273-5387. Mr. Mullin??? Just teetering on the edge of golfing
    insanity!!! Richard
