Note 106.0 DRIVING RANGES ??? 14 replies

Driving ranges are hard to find here in Massachusetts, especially
in the Rte 128 - Rte 495 area.

If you know of one, could you give the location and perhaps describe
    it a little?

    Thanks.

Note 106.1 DRIVING RANGES ??? 1 of 14

A couple: one is at Leo J. Martin Memorial Golf Course in Weston,
which is off 128 between Rt 30 and Rt 16. Another is in Dedham -
McGolf. It's just off Rt 1, down the street from Moseley's On The
Charles. The range at Martin Memorial is small, and, like the course
itself, not well maintained (rather shabby mats and tees). McGolf
is a franchise (like McDonalds, right?), and they've put in some
really nice astroturf mats with tees built in.

I think there's another range on Rt 9 in Westboro (at least according
to my daughter's boyfriend, who's pretty reliable, thank God). Other
than that, Stow Acres Golf Course has a range too. Don't know of
any others. Back in the good old days (pre-condo & office park develop-
ment) there were two on Rt. 9 in Natick, right across the street
from each other! Those days are gone forever, I'm afraid.

Might be a little further out than you might care but where I live
(Peabody MA), there are three driving ranges all within about a
    5 mile radius.

There is one on Summit Street, right behind the Centennial Industrial
Park (take the Centennial Park Exit off Rt. 128 to Summit Street.

There is one on Route 1 Southbound on the Peabody/Danvers line (take
the exit for Rt 1 northbound from Rt. 128, exit at Rt. 114 and get
back on Rt. 1 southbound.) It is five minutes from Rt. 128.

There is one on Route 114 in Middleton. (from Rt 128, take Rt.
1 northbound exit to Rt. 114 west, follow for about 2 miles and
the driving range is on the right). This is near the Middleton
Golf Course which has its own driving range.

There is a driving range in Westboro on route 9. It's called "The
Westboro Driving Range" (big surprise). It's on route 9 about 10
minutes west of 495. It is on the left side as you travel west.

There are also 2 more further away. One is in Millbury near a par
3 course somewhere off route 20 and the other is in Auburn near
the Auburn Mall. I've been to the one in Auburn and it is just OK.

The Westboro Range has a natural grass hitting surface (that is
not open yet) and their mats are pretty shoddy.

Update to my earlier note on Leo J. Martin - they have now installed
fullsized astroturf mats on the driving range, replacing the wornout
rubber mats of years past. Can't comment on the condition of the
course, however; waited around for over an hour Sunday morning and
still would have had close to another hour's wait, so drove up to
Unicorn instead. The thing to remember about Martin (aka "River-
side"): it's cheap! Only $7 for 18 holes on weekends. It attracts
    a very big crowd.

Billerica Country Club has a driving range as well as nine hole
course. Its a little tricky to get to but suffice to say it is
near Billerica center and route 3A. If you know the area at all,
you can get off at Concord Road exit off of Route 3 and head to
the center. It is listed in the phone book also. You would porbably
    want directions.........

If you are interested in just improving your swing and working the
winter kinks out there is an indoor range located in Framingham,
Ma. I can't recall the name of the place but it is located on the
east bound side of Rte. 9 about 500 Yds from the Mass Pike entrance.
It is also where the Framingham Motor Lodge is located. There is
a Pro shop on the 1st floor and a range down stairs. Last year (
if my memory serves me right) it was $5 for 1/2 hr.

As far as the range located in Westboro, Ma. - it is run by the
Westboro Rotory club. Therefore it is the best maintained range
going. Normally they open later than the rest of the ranges and
use more high school teenage help. Because of this you may go down
to the range on a beautiful day to find that nobody showed up to
open the place. Irratic at best.

Whirlaway is in Methuen. Don't know the phone number offhand,
but they have a decent pro-shop so it should be available from
information. From Rt 495 get off at exit 49 and head towards
Methuen (Haverhill is the other way). It's about 3-4 miles
	on the right.

I've been there a couple of times and it's nice in that they
have two areas: one with astro-turf mats and the other real
grass. But, they charge more for buckets to be used on the real
	grass side.

I didn't realize they have lights, always been there during daylight.

The indoor golf center is now open in Framingham. They opened on
Friday the 9 of December. They have brand new hitting matts along with
a bunch of brand new balls that they bought for our (FCC's) outdoor
range. They also have an extensive pro shop.

It is located on Route 9 eastbound just after the entrance to the
Turnpike at the Framingham Motor Inn.

I will post the hours tomorrow.

Unfortunately most of the driving ranges in the greater
128 area are more valuable as real estate than a going business.

There is a range at Stow Acres in Stow. It's pretty good with
several simulated greens to use as targets. This year the tee
area is getting pretty beat up with a lot of use from the golf
	school and little rain.

Another range is at Leo J Martin in Weston?. Unfortuantely you have
to hit off mats. Colonial in Lynnfield has a practice area. It isn't
very large and is often under water in the spring.

Where is the range in Danvers? I hope you aren't thinking of the
one at the former GolfTown which is now on it's way to becoming
a shopping center. (It used to have several stalls with a roof.
At least you could go practice on a rainy day.)

	Hope this helps.

I've been to some driving ranges that I won't go back to also.
There are a couple that I like and some that I go to that I really
don't care too much for. Things that are important:

    		Can I hit off grass.
Is there a chance to get hit by a ball if I do hit off
    		 the grass.
IF I can't hit off the grass, what are the mats like.

Targest are a must. Distance markers aren't real so I don't
care. Most people like to fly the 250 yd sign (even though it's
only 175) You've got to have round balls (no chunks out of them)
that are in reasonably good shape. I hate hitting marshmellows.

The best setup I've seen is the setup that was put in at BCC this
year. We have mats but they are really great. The only problem
is that it's real short. I can knock my 2 iron out of the range
all the time. Other than that it's very good. I'm sure there's
better setups but I haven't been exposed to them.

The new driving range that opened in Amherst is pretty good.
But since it is new everything is in A-1 condition, the balls and
the mats. The grassy area leaves a little bit to be desired as you
end up hitting diagonally towards the yardage markers, and sometimes
the grass area leaves you hitting off a slight down or side hill
    lie.
The driving range in Bedford NH, at Golfland?, is okay too.
The only problem seems to be that everytime I've been there, there
has been either a crosswind or a headwind. Demoralizing. They don't
have the grass area to hit off.
Whirlaway in Metheun, Mass I don't really care for, the balls
are okay but not great, but it's closer to home. At least you can
hit off the grass, but it is quite hacked up.

Don't remember the prices at any of them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re:< Note 425.0 by MSEE::KELLEY "got to get the short game togther" >

I go to a driving range for two main reasons:

        1) To develop a consistent GOOD stroke trying to analyse all the
things that are involve; i.e. grip, stance, backswing,
downswing, follow through (Not all at the same time or I'll go
           crazy)

        2) Whenever I achieve 1) above (rarely) then I look for accuracy,
both in direction and distance, not to see how much further I
can hit it, but to know how far I can consistently hit it with
           what club.

So I look for a reasonable tee area. Its difficult to get good grass
areas, so a mat that resembles grass as close as possible is OK.
Since I also look for accurate distance markets, mats that are fixed
give you always the same distance to markers.

I look for targets: pins, traps, etc.

    I look for reasonable balls.

One of the good things that happen to Stow Acres with the new
ownership is that they look at the range as a money making part of
the course, the have a golf school with several instructors for all
levels and they have dramatically improved the condition of the
range. They installed mats, distance markets, pins, traps. And
since the range is flanked by trees wind doesn't bother much. The
only problem is that I usually stop there on my way home after work
and orientation of the range is to the north. I am leftie and the
sun is right on my eyes. It's OK for you righties.

They charge $6 for a large bucket, $4 for a medium and $2.50 for a
small. I think the are suppose to have 90, 60 and 30 balls
    respectively.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I like a range like the one at Charmingfare, there's nothing like
a good side hill lie to develope that draw you've always wanted.
There should be more ranges build on cliffs, I love the ball being
8 inches above my feet. Also it's great to hit off dirt. The one
bad part is that the balls are fairly good, and the price ($50.00
    for the year).

    Other ranges:

Green Medow - great place to hit balls because of the way the
range is layed out, but balls are average and there
is a minimun amount of grass. $3.00 for a bucket.

Amherst - nice place to hit also, i use the mats because
you always get a side hill lie on the grass, mats
are in nice shape, price is in a previous note.

Things I like in a range:

        good balls

enough room so you won't get killed by a wayward shot

        level lie

grass or mats don't matter much to me because I always pratice
        using a tee

        price

        location

I think Charmingfare is the worst driving range around.

        Things that I like are:

              1. to be able to hit off the grass, and that it is main-
tained as would be a tee or fairway

              2. There should also be plenty of Targets and/or yard
                 markers.

              3. There should also be a shaded area to relax, and more
than enough tees to be able to take your time.

              4. There should also be plenty of balls, you shouldn't
                 have to wait.

30 balls cost me $1.75 at the Penn State Blue Course range. Being
Penn State... the grass area you hit off of is more plush than most
courses I've played! (Agriculture people always like to show off!).
I go over during my lunch hour in the summer 3 days a week, and
the hitting area is always moved around. They have four tiers and
only use one per day. They also use Penn State "Rocket" balls which
are basically professional balls with PSU's logo.
There is a driving range within walking distance from my home
also. It gets very little use and also has nice grass. They have
three tees built and rotate their use. They topdress each about
3 times per year. It costs $2.50 for 30 balls there. I board horses
at the stable beside the range, so my wife messes with the horses
while I mess with my swing... very convenient.

Stow's got the best in this area, for my money...you can hit a small
bucket at lunch time and not feel totally worn out back at the office
(or get too sweaty, either). The only problem is it's been closed
for about a month now. So my next best choice is Leo J. Martin,
in Weston, which is run by the Metropolitan District Commission,
They've made a few improvements to the driving range:
Last year they took out the rubber mats and replaced them with
full-sized astroturf jobs like Stow has; and recently they took down
the barriers between the mats, which were so close to the tee it was
impossible (psychologically) to make an inside-out swing with a driver,
since you'd be afraid to hit the barrier with the clubhead. Of course,
this means your risk of getting nailed by someone's 90-degree pitchout
is increased, but that's a risk you take at Stow too. The range
is also located between the 1st and 6th fairways, with only a line
of trees guarding the 1st on the left, and a rather porous net
protecting the 6th on the right. This is something to keep in mind
when you're playing those holes. In fact, if you put your tee shot
to the right on #1, you'll have a deuce of a time finding it amongst
all the range balls! You are definitely motivated to hit it quick
    and get out of there.

Price is 3.50/bucket (one size only), balls are in varying condition,
but generally not too bad (not as good as Stow's, by any means).
And there's a snack bar, pro shop, etc. on the premises.

There's another range in Dedham (I think) called McGolf (kind of
a franchise, like McDonald's), which is more expensive (4.50/bucket
last time I checked last Spring) that has fullsized mats and where
the balls are better quality than Leo J. There are more distance
markers, too, but their accuracy is open to question. They do make
good targets, though. While Stow and Leo J attract serious golfers,
    McGolf is often used by macho young dudes out to impress their dates;
and there's a miniature golf course onsite, too. And on a warm summer
evening, squadrons of ravenous mosquitoes sorty out of the nearby
Charles River to slake their bloodlust! Take along strong insect
    repellent.

are $2.50, $4.00, and $6.00, and the amount of balls seems fair.
This place is great, but unfortunately needs target greens. However,
for all you egomaniacs, the distances appear to be 15-20 yards short,

is now under new management - a couple of DEC folks who "took the
package. Real nice people, tremendous improvement in the facility and
very easy to get to. They also have "frequent hitter" benefit cards. I
    highly recommend it.

A new range will be opening soon in Londonderry, NH -- I think the
sign said "soon". The grass is in and the fence is up; work is still
being done on the "clubhouse" (or whatever you would call it at a
range). They'll also have mini-golf for the windmill crowd.

It is on Rt 102, a few hundred yards west of the 102/128 intersection.

A neighbor told me that he saw Brad Park (ex-Bruin) at a new driving
range, somewhere north of Boston. Brad owns the range and it's still
under construction. Guess he got to talk to him for a few minutes.
Wish I could remember the name of the town.

I believe it's right off Rte 495 north bound in Amesbury, Mass.
It proclaims Brad Park's Driving Range. I don't think I'd care to hit
there though, it's hitting up a hill almost all the way..... After
    100yds out it's all uphill.

Thanks. Gives me good reason to hit the beach and then visit the
driving range on the way back.

I know what you mean about hitting uphill. It's tough to estimate
distance and you don't get to see the ball fly as long (can't tell
how much draw or fade you put on the ball).
471.13new one in Tewksbury (at the mini-golf course)DEVMKO::BLAISDELLRick, dtn 264-5414Thu Aug 20 1992 13:0714

A new range just opened this past week in Tewksbury, Ma. It's
located on Rte. 38 just a couple minutes from the rte. 495 exit.

Tried it out last night. On the plus side, all the balls are
brand new and it has a couple of well placed, large trees.
You can visualize narrow fairways unlike most ranges where you
are hitting into wide open fields. On the down side, it looks
like it is all mats (no grass tees). Also, it only extends out
about 270-280, so long hitters should be able to hit it out of
the range. It impresses the guy next to you, but not the range
      management. 8^)

471.14Range in Sterling, Ma.MRKTNG::VARLEYThu Aug 20 1992 14:148
I tried out the range in Sterling, Ma. the other night - closer to my
new place in Princeton. Pretty good balls, and nice folks, but kind of
a dustbowl. Also, the AstroTurf mats themselves either need pads
underneath, or need to be thicker. Don't know what it is, but the ball
just felt strange coming off the mat. At South Meadow, the mats feel
pretty good. Not much else around the area, so I guess I'll be back.

    Rick,
Have you tried the range at souhegan? no mats. Not sure how
helpful it is to hit off mats especially irons.

Have found an improvement in my game since discovering use of full
backswing but have not been able to hit woods. Bought a 2 iron I am
anxious to test out - only lefthanded 1,2 iron in the eastern half of
    u.s. that I know of.

Perhaps it isn't quite of the moment of hurrincane andrew but I sure
am upset that none of the stores from nev. bob's to pro shops to kmart,
mvp etc, etc cares to stock loose lefty clubs and virtually no full
sets either. nev.bob has a set of stiff shaft mcgregors but I get
nervous buying where I cannot test club out

Yep Bill. "Discovered" it a couple of weeks ago. Great range!
But shhhhhhh, let's keep it quiet. Don't want it to get too
       crowded. ;^)

opposite the Skating Rink between Marlboro and Hudson. Also quite close to
Stratus Computer.

Nice setup, about 25 bays with mats and there will be a grass tee and
sand trap areas opening at the end of this month. Medium bucket was $5 with
a discount if you flash your badge.

There also have a pro there part-time who will give lessons.

471.27The Driving Range - Mason N.H.ICS::STUARTWhatever it takes.Wed May 10 1995 09:3535
Not sure if this range is in here but it deserves mention......

"The Driving Range" (original eh ?) opened last year in Mason N.H.

This year the place looks great ! Beautiful grass tee area, sand trap,
mats(of course) and 4 target greens/elevations to hit to.
They also sell some golf stuff, ice cream and some other foods.

They have a Senior Tour Pro, Paul Moran that teaches there.

They are going to have their "official" Grand Opening on Memorial Day
weekend. There is a BBQ cookout and raffles all day both days. There
will be a longest drive contest and a hole in one contest. The prize
for the hole in one is a new Ford Explorer ! Paul Moran will be there
for adult clinics, a free kids clinic and FREE consultation. The owner
told me Paul will be hanging around the hitting areas and anyone can
ask for tips.

This place is about 10 - 15 minutes from the center of Townsend Ma.
on Rt. 124, right off Rt. 31. (603)878-1324 if you want more info.

Disclaimer; I have no financial interest in this place and have nothing
to gain from entering this note. I just happen to live 5
minutes away from it and spend alot of time there.

Buckets;

	small $3
	large $5
	Jumbo $10

add a buck or two to hit off the grass area.
