<<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 60.0 "Time For New Grip's" 4 replies USMRM1::GHIGGINS 17 lines 14-JAN-1987 21:19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This may be common knowlege to most of us around Central Ma., but I thought I would pass this around anyway. Neveda Bob's will regrip your club's for the cost of the grip. I imagine they will use any grip of your choice but I only asked about the Victory grip. This comes out to be $.99 (their cost of the grip ) per club. The labor is free. I was told they have been doing this for about two years, and it is a kind of a promotional thing to get people in the store. I'm going down there tonight to drop my clubs off, so I will be ready to start playing around mid Febuary (Oh Boy !) at the Cape, if the weather permits. This is the outlet in Westboro,Ma. I hope this info was worth it to some of you out there. George ================================================================================ Note 60.1 "Time For New Grip's" 1 of 4 PLANET::STANZ 20 lines 16-JAN-1987 22:36 -< Wait them out! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George, I had the regrip job done at Nevada Bob's also. They did a good job, but let me tell you a little story: Scenario 1: Last Spring-maybe mid-March. Same Specail advertised. Went in and wanted to drop off my clubs and get Victory grips. Was told they were out of stock, and *maybe* would be in stock "In a couple of weeks". I chose to decline, since I was heading to Fla. in a week. Scenario 2: Went in about a week before Thanksgiving. Was told they were out of stock on Victory grips, and *maybe* would be in stock "Ina a couple of weeks". Wanted to sell me the more expensive Victory grip (cord type) for $2.95 ea. I chose to wait them out, and left my clubs there. I called after 3, 4, and 5 weeks. Finally, 6 weeks later, my clubs were done. Glad it was Winter, and I wasn't planning to play........ Hope you have a better response! ================================================================================ Note 60.2 "Time For New Grip's" 2 of 4 USMRM1::GHIGGINS 16 lines 20-JAN-1987 20:09 -< Bob's Grip War's !!!! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I did go last week but didn't end up doing what I started out to do. Although I new all my clubs didn't need regripping, I figured, "Wow, what a deal", and told him to do them all. I got there about 5:30 pm, it was kind of slow, and he (Steve) said if you want to wait I'll have them done in about an hour. Well after regripping one club he came out and sort of convinced me I was wasting $10. Actually he was right. He informed me when I originally called that January was the best time to do this because it's pretty slow and doesn't pick up till around March. And I really didn't save any money because I ended up buying some shoes,etc.,etc.,etc. The hell with it ! I'll just buy new clubs. :^) George ================================================================================ Note 60.3 "Time For New Grip's" 3 of 4 GUMDRP::GAUDETTE 7 lines 2-FEB-1987 19:54 -< try this next time >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many rubber grips such as the Green Victory can be restored by a light sanding with about 100 grit sandpaper. You will find that this takes away the slipperiness (sp?) and restores that as new feel. While this method does not eliminate the need for regripping, it can substantially improve the life of your grips. Peter ================================================================================ Note 60.4 "Time For New Grip's" 4 of 4 USWAV3::FAGERBERG 4 lines 3-FEB-1987 14:48 -< Have your wife do it! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE .3 Using regular scouring powder ( eg COMET ) works as well. <<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 147.0 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 7 replies AUTHOR::F_MCGOWAN 22 lines 7-SEP-1987 13:44 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another gripping tale...early this summer, my wife began complaining that the knuckle of her right pinky finger was painful after swinging the club for a few holes. She was using the standard overlapping grip, and seemed to be holding the club okay, but the pain was getting too severe to ignore; so I suggested she switch to the baseball grip. Voila! The pain disappeared, and she started making better contact with the ball into the bargain. Yesterday, on the final drive of the day, I decided I'd give it a try (the baseball grip) just as an experiment: I hit the ball more solidly than I'd been hitting it for the past few rounds and made my best drive of the day and one of my best of the year. I was, needless to say, impressed, so when I got back home I took out my practise mat and whiffle balls and tried the grip with some of the other clubs in the bag, and got similar results. Does anyone else out there use this grip? If so, how does it work for you? I intend to experiment some more, at the driving range, before I try using it fulltime, but so far it's got me wondering if I shouldn't have been hitting them like this all season! Frank ================================================================================ Note 147.1 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 1 of 7 STKHLM::LITBY "Where EAGLES dare..." 12 lines 8-SEP-1987 08:55 -< I do >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I started using it this season, and it works very well for me. I find that it helps a lot when hitting woods and short irons, but not as well when I hit long/medium irons. So I use the baseball grip on woods and 8-SW irons. I feel it gives me better control over the club, and also helps me to roll over the hands in the follow-through, something I had a problem with before I changed grips. -- Mr Litby ================================================================================ Note 147.2 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 2 of 7 ODIXIE::KLEIN 19 lines 16-SEP-1987 23:21 -< Question on left thumb for baseball grip >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I haven't tried this but I've always wondered (please respond): Assuming you're right handed, when you use the baseball grip do you still extend your left thumb down the shaft and overlap it with your right palm? Or is it a true baseball grip with your left thumb wrapped aroung the shaft (I can't imagine that working) I used to use the interlocking grip used by Nicklaus (and not many other Pros) with the left index and right pinky linked around each other. I now use the more conventional overlap (Vardon?) grip, which I found hard to get used to at first but my hands feel more like one unit now. I suppose the basball grip would promote the right hand rolling over the left at impact (better release). I'm not sure I want to experiment, but I am curious what you do with your left thumb on the baseball grip. -Joe ================================================================================ Note 147.3 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 3 of 7 BSS::RIGGEN 4 lines 14-OCT-1987 21:57 -< LEFT THUMB ON TOP >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Being left handed but I play right handed and use the basball grip I do have my thumb on top of the shaft with my right hand overlapping my thumb. At one time I was told to move my thumb around the shaft but I couldn't control the direction at all.. ================================================================================ Note 147.4 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 4 of 7 MSEE::KELLEY "got to get the short game togther" 19 lines 11-NOV-1988 08:35 -< what do you use...? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rather than start a new note I thought that I would add this here. What grip do you use (overlap, interlock, baseball)? Why do you use that particular grip? Have you tried any of the others? Until this year I always used the baseball grip, I had never tried any other until this year. I tried the interlock and found, like in the base note that my gingers would hurt after a few holes. Now, and for most of this season, I use the overlap. I find that it is far more comfortable than the interlock grip and I have better control with it than I did the baseball grip. What type of grip do you use when putting? Do you use the same grip when putting as you do with your other clubs? What are your thoughts? Gene ================================================================================ Note 147.5 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 5 of 7 MJOSWS::FAGLEY "beat the resident" 11 lines 11-NOV-1988 11:06 -< loosen the interlock a little >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hogan says the most important thing about grip is to insure both hands work as one unit. I use an interlock grip and once the tendons in my fingers streached a little the discomfort stopped. Also, you may be interlocking too tightly if your fingers hurt, you don't have to weld those fingers together to use an interlock. When I complained to the pro who gives me lessons about the tendons pulling he told me what I just told you. When putting I use a baseball grip, (I don't putt very wll either... but it's more concentration than anything with me). Rick ================================================================================ Note 147.6 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 6 of 7 NPOGRP::GARY 10 lines 11-NOV-1988 12:18 -< interlock, for now.. >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also use the interlock grip. Toyed with the overlap in early spring, but it felt like the club would come out of my hands. My grip is already too firm so I stuck with the secure feeling I got with the interlock. I'll tinker with the overlap again in the off- season. For putting, and chip shots that I don't want much wrist action, I use the baseball grip. -Alan- ================================================================================ Note 147.7 Have I Lost My Grip? Or Found It? 7 of 7 MTWAIN::F_MCGOWAN "Ci stiamo gia divertendo?" 11 lines 22-NOV-1988 11:35 -< "Baseball Grip" a misnomer >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually, it's called the 10-finger grip, and is like the other more orthodox grips in every respect except that the pinky of the right hand is snug against the index finger of the left hand (if you're righthanded) rather than overlapping, or being interlocked. I've since gone back to the overlapping grip, which feels more secure than the 10-finger, but my wife is a confirmed user of the 10-finger grip, and does okay with it. The main thing is to keep the hands as united as possible, irrespective of the grip of choice. Frank <<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 423.0 Grips... What's good? 13 replies NAC::KALLUNKI 21 lines 18-OCT-1988 14:54 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My clubs are getting pretty slippery and need new grips. Before I head out and get talked into buying something the salesman is pushing, I thought I'd get an opinion or two on what is the best grip. I play in all types of weather and need something that'll stay gripable. (is that a word? ;) ) Other questions.... Should I change all at once? Avoiding inconsistency. When do you change your grips... how often? Will cleaning them on occasion extend their life expectancy? Or better yet, is it a good idea to water-proof them or provide some type of conditioner? Thanks Walt ================================================================================ Note 423.1 Grips... What's good? 2 of 13 SCOMAN::KOZAK 15 lines 18-OCT-1988 19:28 -< FULL CORD GRIPS WORK WELL >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRY SWITCHING TO FULL CORD GRIPS. I DID MYSELF AND LOVE THEM. THE PRO DID ALL OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME. BEING FULL CORD, AS OPPOSED TO THE "STOCK" RUBBER GRIPS, THEY WILL FEEL HARDER. IT WILL TAKE A FEW ROUNDS TO GET USED TO THIS. NOW, WHEN I TRY A CLUB THAT HAS A FULL RUBBER GRIP, IT FEELS LIKE A SPONGE! AN ADVANTAGE I LIKE OF THE FULL CORDS IS THE FACT THAT WHEN YOU PLAY IN THE RAIN, THE GRIPS DO NOT GET SLIPPERY. THE ONE DISADVANTAGE IS THAT THEY WILL WEAR OUT YOUR GLOVES FASTER. BEFORE I HAD THE FULL CORDS, I HAD THE STANDARD RUBBER GRIPS. WHEN THEY BECAME SLICK, I CLEANED THEM WITH A STIFF BRUSH AND AJAX. JUST MAKE SURE TO RINSE THEM COMPLETELY. GOOD LUCK IN OUR CHOICE. KEN ================================================================================ Note 423.3 Grips... What's good? 3 of 13 OBRIEN::KEVIN "The perfect swing...the endless sear" 24 lines 19-OCT-1988 12:42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Golf Pride has the best rubber grips around. I prefer the Gold Crown. The Green Victory is more or less the standard. The difference (beside color) is that the Crown has a reminder rib on the back. Any club repair shop can change your grips. I would suggest that you get grips that are fitted to your hands. Tacki-Mac is also a popular grip, they have some that feel like leather. I don't know about performance in the rain, but rumor has it that they are good. Cleaning will make them last longer. I'm too lazy to do that though. I change my grips every year. As for the full cord grip, I used them a couple of years ago. I did not like them because of the loss of feel and they screwed up the swing weight (which wasn't too good anyway). Your mileage may vary of course. There is a half cord grip by Golf Pride in the Victory style. Our moderator could give you some good info on those! KO ================================================================================ Note 423.4 Grips... What's good? 4 of 13 NAC::KALLUNKI 22 lines 19-OCT-1988 17:25 -< Grips and groans >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply .1 I did read note 60. but found more info on where to buy grips inexpensively (at Nevada Bob's), than what grip type is best. There was a tip on bringing back the gripyness by sanding or using comet cleanser. Reply .2, .3 Good info... Seems with each grip there is some +'s and -'s. I'm leaning toward the Victory Gold because of "feel" and "reminder rib" ( if it's what I think it is) . Is the reminder rib a bump or notch to mark the baby fingers location, or similar effect? How do leather grips fair? My only experience with leather grips has been to see one unravel. I have no idea how well they perform. What do tour players use? Or is grip choice like choosing putter type? Walt ================================================================================ Note 423.5 Grips... What's good? 5 of 13 EUCLID::WARFIELD "Gone Golfing" 13 lines 19-OCT-1988 17:53 -< I like 1/2 cords >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have 1/2 cords on my woods and Green Victory Grips on my irons. (That's how they came.) They are due to be replaced and I will replace them all with 1/2 cords. The 1/2 cords are good in the rain. (When it rains I use them without a glove & get a better grip.) I haven't had much problem with them wearing out gloves. My gloves wear out first at the heal of the palm which comes in contact with the top of your glove (the cords are on the bottom of the grip). My first set of clubs had leather grips. They are nice, but require lots of care. (I wouldn't suggest it if you don't like washing your rubber grips.) They also get slick when wet or old. Larry ================================================================================ Note 423.6 Grips... What's good? 6 of 13 OBRIEN::KEVIN "The perfect swing...the endless sear" 20 lines 20-OCT-1988 12:54 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE:.4 >> "reminder rib" ( if it's what I think it is) . Is the reminder >> rib a bump or notch to mark the baby fingers location, or The reminder is a rib that runs down the back of the grip. This rib fits into some part of your hand. (I put the rib at the base of my fingers, some people put it in the center of the plam) It is supposed to be a method of taking the same grip all the time. The Victory does not have a reminder (to speak of) it the Crown that has the reminder. Leather is nice but it BIG $$$$$$$. There are prewraps that are a little cheaper but it's still at least twice a rubber grip. As for the pro's From what I've seen on TV it's just like you suspect, you see them all. KO ================================================================================ Note 423.7 Grips... What's good? 7 of 13 ODIXIE::WESTCL "Gator Golfer" 7 lines 20-OCT-1988 17:07 -< Keep 'em clean >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grips are like putters. Find what you like. Keeping them clean will not only make them last longer, it will improve your ability to hold onto the club, regardless of weather. I don't wear a glove. Therefore, I dampen the end of a towel when playing and use it to wipe down grips and keep the hands clean. Good luck. ================================================================================ Note 423.8 Grips... What's good? 8 of 13 MSEE::KELLEY "got to get the short game togther" 10 lines 21-OCT-1988 08:40 -< cord... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As has already been mentioned, grips are a matter of personal preference. KO mentioned in .3 that I use Victory cord, which I like very much. I haven't used them in the rain all that much so I can't vouch for how they are in those conditions. They are available with the reminder rib or round. I also have heard that Tacki-mac are great in the rain... Good luck... I have decided on the 1/2 cord with the reminder rib. But there's a good chance Taki-mac will get the call. I haven't tried taki-mac, but plan to prior to making a decision... just in case. Thanks for the information ! Walt ================================================================================ Note 423.10 Grips... What's good? 10 of 13 OURVAX::GLASS 10 lines 24-OCT-1988 16:30 -< "more advice from this terminal" >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walt, Golf Works(800-848-8358) has the grips and tape and solvent you need. This shop also has a very nice description of grips and advice over the phone. I have my custom driver gripped with leather, green victory grips on my irons and 1/2 cords on the rest of my woods. This is the best combination for me. I also replace grips twice a year and don't worry about cleaning them unless they really "fall in mud". Throughout that time I have installed Victory grips and had thought they were the best composite grip available. Recently I tried the Conquest grip by Lamkin. It is a vastly superior grip to the Victory in that it: 1) Wears longer 2) Is tackier 3) And is softer All this at the same price!! Look into them and I think that you will be suprised!! ================================================================================ Note 423.12 Grips... What's good? 12 of 13 MSEE::KELLEY "got to get the short game togther" 9 lines 26-OCT-1988 15:01 -< I had bad luck with Lamkin... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: .11 I haven't tried the conquest, but I did try the Lamkin cord. I don't know if I just had some bad grips or if it the norm for Lamkins cord, but they started to show wear after only a few rounds. I was VERY disappointed... Gene ================================================================================ Note 423.13 Grips... What's good? 13 of 13 CSG::LEWIS 9 lines 1-NOV-1988 15:36 -< Try Chamois grips! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the last few years, a grip called the Chamois grip has become popular and I have had all my clubs (except putter) gripped with them. The pluses: they're soft and retain quite a bit of resilience and feel. They're terrific in the rain and retain a natural tackiness that can be renewed by washing with soap and water. The bad news: On a hot, humid day, they seem a bit slippery. I still think the trade off is worth it. Nevada Bob's will install them for $2.50 a club. P.S. My handicap has come down 4 strokes since I regripped. I can't say it's all from the grips, but they didn't hurt.

Well it took quite a while... but I did FINALLY regrip my clubs. I ended up getting the 1/2 cord grips. Just finding a store that had them in stock took forever. I ended up going to New England Golf Supply in Marlboro Ma. Nevada Bobs really gave me the run around, telling me to come back in three weeks and STILL not having the grips... when another Nevada Bobs did.

I have been playing golf with my father now for about a year. He decided to replace his clubs, and I bought his original set off him. He is happy with his new set but really misses the grips on his old set. They are 'TACKY MAX' and seem to last very well. He bought the clubs about 4 years ago when he was working in New Jersey. We live in the UK and so far I have not been able to locate a supplier of such grips. Having read this notesfile Neveda Bobs seems to be a good place to try, but they have never heard of them over here. Therefore as a last hope I thought I would ask you guys for some help. Can anyone track down a supplier of TACKY MAX grips and let me have the details? It would make my fathers day if I could get these grips for him. Yours hopefully ! Hi Everyone, I would like to here from all those players that do not use a glove... especially those that play golf in the New England area. What brand of grips do you use? And why? I tend to go through gloves quickly, mainly because I hate when they get slippery due to wear/dirt. If I could find a grip that I could use without a glove but still maintain the same tacky feel... I'll save a bundle on gloves :) ! One type I tried already was full/half cord. I didn't like the feel and the change it made in swingweight. I'd like to use one of the "new" rubber models that claim great results. Problem is there are so many to choose from... any info would be much appreciated. thanks Walta

Walta, I use the standard rubber victory grips and have had no problems at all, even in the rain and late last year, I had plenty of opportunities to play in the rain. Don't know the level of 'tackiness' that you want, but to me the Victories were fine. No slips at all. Just make sure that you replace the grips regularly, which for you may be 2-3 time during the year. Me? I only have to change 'em once a year. 8^( Since discarding gloves at the start of last year, my grip has become more consistent and solid. No longer do I have to occasionally adjust for glove wear. The 'feel' of club to hands remains constant. Hope that came out right. Anyway, not only did the no glove experiment net me a more solid grip, but saved me money as well. Good luck in finding what you want! -rick

Hi Rick, KNowing the way you can smoke the ball, I'm surprised the victory grips have sufficed.. I use them now, and when I play without a glove and there's some moisture , it's gets scary . I feel as though I may helecopter my driver into the tree tops ! :) But when they are dry, they do feel just right. If I have to grip the club any more than what will keep my wrist relaxed... my swing becomes stiff and I try to muscle the ball. You've seen me play when that happens, and it's not pretty ! Without a smooth wrist release I'm a bogie golfer. So the tackyness I'm looking for , is such that I can still maintain a relaxed control. It maybe that it's not possible without going to a glove? It's all new info to me... I've never really experimented with grips. One thing just crossed my mind... I wonder if stickum is legal? thanks Walta

Walta I have Tacky-Mac grips and they work well without a golve. I haven't used a glove for years. Started when I saw Freddy not using one. Then just kept at it when my last glove wore out. I have found it creates some calouses, but what the heck. Along the same line, an intersting discovery I made while playing thru a monsoon recently. Gloves get wet and they make it more difficult to play in the rain. I devised a method for playing in rain that works. Bear with me, because this sounds strange, but trust me, I have tried it in California, Michigan and Florida. When playing in the rain: Keep bag(clubs) covered as much as possible. Starting with a semi dry club is better. Collect from the men's (or ladies room) a quantity of the paper hand towels. Keep them stashed so they stay dry. One towel usually lasts for two or three shots, just wrap it around the grip, the little bit of moisture will keep it from slipping, and you have created a thin, dry surface. When done with the swing, unwrap the towel and put it in a dry spot(inside coat, etc.) Seems odd, but this works better than gloves and all the towels you can carry plus the towels are easy to carry and keep dry. reply -3 ish Hi Steve, After the show you and Andy put on in last years Challenge Cup... in the cold/rain at Shattuck Inn. I'd say you rank as an expert in the area ! What did you guys end up shooting 8 under? I looked through the Golf Day magazine and saw the Royal Grips you spoke of. I think I'll give them a shot. Thanks Reply -1 Hi SCD, That's a unqiue way of handling the wet weather... it also explains the reason why their are never any paper towels in the mens room at golf courses ! :) Seriously though, I can see this will work out pretty well when you are carrying your own clubs. The extra weight of all the wet towels normally used really adds up. Even if you use the technique of hanging the towel under the umbrella it still gets wet rather quickly. Paper towels are alot lighter. thanks for the tips; Walta

I had my clubs regripped last year to Avon Chamois grips. Now, I can't imagine using another grip. They wear well (little), very soft to the touch, feel good, and still play well when damp.

I regripped mine with the relatively new Victory dimple half-cord grips. To me these grips feel great. The top part is softer and provides better grip than green Victories and the half cord does it job well also. But with cord the gloves go faster and keep the moist more than no-cord, so it's not as good when it gets wet. On the glove side, I got in Nevada Bob's a synthetic glove made by Etonic (about $10). I have play with it about 6 times and so far it feels great. I doesn't seem to wear as quick and it stays tacky. But I have only played it in cold dry weather, so I still have to test it wet. Use leather - They are very expensive but - You never ever have to regrip and therefore are more cost effective than any kind of synthetic so long as you keep the clubs for five or more years. Use top quality calfskin, costs 15$ each, and they will not wear where you grip the club. No need for gloves. No need to hold tight in rain, summer humidity, winter cold, your own tension sweat etc... They simply do not feel slippery under any conditions. I really mean you never have to regrip even if you don't bother to wash the grips which you absolutely must do with synthetics once a week if you are to prevent the chemical reaction from your body salts from making the synthetics slippery. I find this subject interesting because intuitively you would think the synthetics, like rubber, would be best, but because of the chemical reaction to you sweat and the lack of durability compared to leather.

Anyone using the new Edwards Royal Grips, synthetic, but with a much improved tackier grip. They are the closest leather simulators I've seen yet.

Reply -1, Hi Phil, Too late for me to change to leather... Ray Karkman just regripped my clubs for me. I ended up getting Tacki Mack grips. GolfWorks didn't have the Royal Grips in stock. I also went to an oversized grip. It cost me around 1/2 a swing weight... due to the extra material weight, but I really like the new fit. The Tacki Mack feel great. Can't say how they'll last (yet). I thought of going to leather but my clubs are swingweighted exactly like I want them, and leather will cause a greater loss. The way I change my mind, I'll probably be back next year getting the leather grips ! :) Walta

Walta Thanks, I was wondering about the swing weight implications. Not sure my swing would notice the difference. Regards Phil

I need some help with my grips. I bought a set of clubs and ask the local pro to build up the grip to fit my hands. I noticed that the grips were still too small. The owner has informed me that there is nothing he can do with the grips currently on the club. He could change the grip to a jumbo size grip but that still might be too small. I asked him about using leather strips, but he did not seem interested. I read in a golf magazine that Michael Jordan needed @17 wraps to build up his grips to fit his hands. I know it can be done, the question is who and how much? Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks, Ken W

You might want to look into the arthritic grips. These are much larger than the normal grips, and can probably be built up to an even larger size. Gary

Building up my grips is the main reason I do my own regriping. You can buy the kit from anyone. I was up to 8 or 9 wraps of masking tape but thats a pain. I now use 1 or 2 layers of duct tape with a .58 or .60 bore grip. The .58 grip gives you the equivalent of an extra layer when put on a .60 shaft. I put Rotal grips on my clubs at the beginning of the 1992 year. In the rain they became slick as ice. The club actually slipped out of my hands on a swing. They are coming off now that the year is pretty much over. An expensive lesson. TOny AKOCOA::DICENZO

Interesting, Tony ! When they first came out, the Royal grips were being touted as the best new wet weather grips going. I've never used 'em, but I've held several, and friends of mine have 'em. It seemed to me that they WOULD be slick in the rain (contrary to the publicity. Since I'm a PR guy, I know most publicity is B^%&S%#@ anyway), although I'm sorry you found out the hard way. Watching the Skins Game yesterday, I was interested in the grips Greg Norman was using. They looked like a "furry" version of the old Golf Pride "cord line" grips. Now THEY looked like they'd be good in the rain... __Jack

...Don't play in the rain with Royal Grips. Otherwise they are fine. ...In a downpour this past fall I made a little extra energetic pass at a 4-wood on Stow South #16. The club was completely out of my hands halfway thru the downswing! I watched in amazement as somehow the club still struck the ball and it flew around 100yds up the fairway!
