I will be vacationing on the Cape during August. While it will
not be a "golf vacation", I hope to play a couple of times during
    that week.
Does anyone have any favorite courses that you recommend and what
can I expect to spend for the greens fee and cart ?

                thanks,
                        Ken

Ken, there are many courses on the Cape. It is said that Cranberry
Valley is one of the best, and while it may be in good shape, I
didn't like it to much when I played there. I think greens fees
were around $18 and carts are another $16 - $18. Pretty steep.
Another course that is said to be very nice, is the Captains. It
is supposed to be one of the best on the Cape. Lastly, if you can
get on, try New Seabury. It is private during some parts of the
year, but you may just hit it right. Another course I played and
liked was, Iyanough Hills (spelling). It was around $12 and carts
around the same. A nice course, but doesn't have the reputation
of those mentioned above. Good Luck, the course on the Cape have
a lot of wind, and can play extremely difficult if you're not used
    to them.

    Beak....
You didn't like Cranberry Valley! What didn't you like about...
your score.... (just kidding) I played there last year and found
it to be absolutely gorgeous.... excellant condition, challenging
(we played the gold tees), fairway bunkers in addition to well bunkered
greens, I plan to plan it again in a coule of weeks...

You should call for reservations 2 days in advance... unless you
want to play it (Cranberry Valley) in the afternoon....

The green fees were $18 .... but you pay $14 around here for much
    less a course..

Another suggestion I may have is Falmouth Country club... I think
the green fees are about $14... cart $14 ... It is a nice course,
very flat... large greens.... a good course .... easy walking course.

-< No way to approach >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smitty, what I didn't like about it was this.
On a lot of approach shots, the course doesn't allow you any option.
What I mean is, that their were traps in front, so you couldn't
play short and run it on to the green. This doesn't bother me.
But the greens were so damn hard, that you couldn't land the ball
on the green without it bouncing over and off the green. I hit
at least 3 or 4 shots with 8, 9 and pitching wedges that just would
not hold the greens. Now I can adapt pretty well, and on some courses
I played, the greens were hard, but at least you could role the
ball onto the greens. And on other courses I've played, the greens
were heavily trapped, but the greens were soft and held when you
hit them. Now I don't expect to be able to hold greens with low
irons, but I've never had problems before with holding greens with
my more lofted irons. I usually play either Top Flights or Titliest
DT's. I know neither is a balata covered ball, but how many amateurs
play balata covered balls? I can't afford it. I'd easily go thru
8 dozen a season, as compared to 2 dozen Surlin covered balls.
Other than that, I liked the course. It was in very good shape
other than the greens being hard. The fairways were immaculant,
and the greens were true and cut low. Tees were also very nice.

                          -< Cape Courses - Private >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I live in Wareham, MA (Known as the Gateway to Cape Cod) and have
had the pleasure of playing a good many of the courses on the Cape.
Here are some observations, probably biased, about courses on the
    Cape and in the region.

    The Privates are ALWAYS better...

o New Seabury is a beautiful course that is listed as semi-private
whatever that means. There are two courses there (one is an executive
course and not worth the effort) but the championship course is
beautiful for the first nine since it plays by, over and through
what I believe is Nantucket Sound. Second nine is inland and very
much like every other Cape course in terms of vegetation, etc. Front
nine makes it worth the effort.

o Hyannisport G.C. Good luck. This is wrapped around the Kennedy
family compound on the west side of Hyannis. Nice old design course
with a few great challenges over salt marshes. I have been trying
for years to get on this course and manage to get there every decade
    or so.

o Woods Hole C.C. Same category as Hyannisport but terrain is vastly
different (hilly). Many blind shots but you don't seem to mind because course
    is impeccably maintained.

o Eastward HO (Chatham) Forget it. This is where all the state
officials go to retire. Tip O'Neill calls this home. Perhaps the
best club on the Cape but not sure if anyone has ever played it
    - it is that private.

o Oyster Harbors (between Hyannis and Falmouth) also exclusive.
I haven't been able to play here but all reports are that the course
is very simple and elegant (old style design).

o Cummaquid (Barnstable) I don't know too much about this course.
I believe that it may be possible to play here with a little effort.
This course is located near route 6A on some typical north-side
Cape terrain. As is the case with most of the privates this too
    is an old style course.

o Ocean Edge (Brewster) Newly opened and being touted as the best
course in all the Ocean Edge ads. Played here last year and was
oddly affected. Course is strange and does not allow the golfer
much flexibility in shot selection. In some instances there appeared
to be no legitimate landing areas. This is also 'golf amongst the
condos'. Some love it - some hate it. NEPGA holds their championship
here and you should hear the pros howl. There is a resort attached
and you can play if you stay.

o Kittanset Club (Marion off Cape) This is undoubtedly the best
course I have ever played on. It is a true links course that resides
on a point of land jutting into Buzzards Bay. The Walker Cup mathces
were held here in (1953?) with Gene Littler emerging. Par 3 Third
hole was made famous by Titleist - it is a ~180 yd carry over tidal
section to a green surrounded by beach. (Interesting note: Most
of the Board of Director of Acushnet (Titleist) belong to this club.
It is so-o-o-o private that they could not get their newly elected
    president admitted as a member.)

Gotta go...will add more later as time allows. There are lots of
courses that can be readily played that will offer challenges without
    crowds and cost.

See you in the next note.

    Regarding New Seabury --
The course is kept private for property owners through Labor
Day and open to the general public in the fall. Last year I attended
a wedding on the Cape and wanted to play but couldn't since the
wedding was a week too early. Rats.

-< Public Courses on the Cape >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are a multitude of public access courses in the southeastern
part of the state. I will do my best to remember them all but am
    sure to miss a few.

Most of these course are new (within the last 20 years) and as such
happened to be designed and built by the same architect - Geoffrey
Cornish. This is a blessing because, in my opinion, he is a good
architect who doesn't rely on the bulldozer method of course design
but seems to deal realistically with what is presented to him in
the basic geography. The only problem is that a Cornish course tends
to look like most other Cornish courses. I don't know how he does
it but take a look at courses like Cranberry Valley, Wareham, Poquoy
Brook and, yes, Stowe Acres and you will find marked similarities.

    Par Three Courses...

Heritage Hill, Lakeville - This is one great golf course. I
hate it because I am not the most accurate iron player but the course
is kept in top shape with 'U.S. Open rough surrounding greens that
can't be measured by Stimpmeter. This is the best of its type possibly
    in New England. (Cornish)

Blue Rock, Yarmouth - This is the second best par 3. Right in the
heart of the Cape. A very good layout kept in excellent shape.

Dunfey's, Hyannis - Pitch and putt only longer and less imagination.

Little Harbor, Wareham - This is now an executive course. Conditioning
leaves much to be desired. A few interesting water holes like the
    11th.

    Regulation Courses...

    (from west to east, generally)

Poquoy Brook, Lakeville - A great Cornish course kept in very good
shape. Moderate greens fee. Recommend getting a tee time (2 days
in advance). Same genre as Stow - a family course that grew and
    grew.

Reservoir Heights, Lakeville - An 18 hole course built where there
was only room for 9. Originally this was a good 9 holer that 'needed'
to be expanded to 18 holes but problems with town and DEQE crimped
their design and the result is too crowded and in several instances
unsafe. If you play you can easily tell the old nine holes - they
    were exciting.

Little Marion, Marion - On the same road as Kittansett. New management
has pumped some life into this design. Course features many olde
stone barriers that cross most fairways and greens on par 3's that
are protected by walls resembling Stonehenge (sp). Inexpensive.
    (9 holes)

Rochester, Rochester - Inexpensive and not very crowded. This course
was designed and built by the owner and his family. They are expanding
any year now to 18 holes but original nine is interesting and
    challenging.

Wareham, Wareham - (Cornish) This one is a gem that could be one
of the best if the owners decide what they want to do. Front nine
is average but spectacular back nine set on top of hills calls for
exact placement. If they reworked the incredible 11th and were
consistent with conditioning then the course would be a must. Now
it is just another place to lose golf balls. (Moderate fees)

White Cliffs, Plymouth - Newly dedicated Gary Player executive course
is attached to a condo development. This is a resurrection of the
original White Cliffs 9 holer. Have no other information.

    Finally over the bridge...

Round Hill, Sandwich - Cornish had his hands full with this land
handed to him by the Volpe brothers (highway construction). The
course has two separate faces. The front nine leaves you mumbling
and trying to catch your breath. This nine is built over huge dunes
left over from the birth of the cape. Many blind shots and drops
of 100 feet not uncommon. Back nine is a great test of golf showing
good design mix. Clubhouse is a showcase that offers a view of Cape
Cod Bay. A little pricy last time I was there.

Otis A.F.B. Course, Bourne - I have never played this one but have
heard that I haven't missed much in the way of design and quality.

Pocasset, Bourne (or Pocasset) - This is one of my favorites. I
can play a three hour round of golf here on a weekend in the morning
year round. Call for tee time. I believe that this course is a
Donald Ross design but am not certain. The course isn't intact due
to some land shifting and a moderate redesign. There are three
relatively new holes that replace two original holes. The course
was strengthened by these changes. Conditions are most always great.
If I could only putt. Trick on weekends is to beat the 8:00 AM members
tournaments and keep moving - they don't fool around.

Holly Ridge, Sandwich - No information.

Cape Cod C.C., Falmouth - Old design that was once part of a caddy
camp and Inn (Clauson's Inn, Coonamesset Inn). Fairly short but
demanding. Heard that they made some changes to the course that
may have hurt. Usually in good shape, hilly.

Falmouth, Falmouth - Never played it. Easy to find and friends say
that it isn't that bad probably reasonable in price.

Paul Harney, Falmouth - Never played it. This is owned by PGA pro
Paul Harney. Had some radical ideas like six inch cups to make golf
easier and more enjoyable. I believe that the cups are back to 4
    1/4 inches.

Cotuit (Highgrounds), Cotuit - This one might not even exist anymore
and I have no information other than I once drove by a sign that
said Cotuit Highgrounds - 9 holes.

Quashnet Valley, Falmouth - Built amongst cranberry bogs and woods
this is reported to be a very good layout and placed in the must
play category by friends. I will play it later this year.

Iyanough Hills, Hyannis - This course has a few really nice golf
holes but I found that they were too few to make up for the overall
penal quality of the course. I am not that bad a shotmaker but found
it impossible to hit the landing areas that you are supposed to
hit. The 18th probably gives you a 5 yard landing area located at
the edge of the lefthand woods. Miss it and you are either in the
woods on the left or you rollllll down the hills to the woods on
the right. (The course is similar to Wareham but Wareham was more
realistic with only two 'round-killer' holes.)

Dennis Highlands, Dennis - Owned and operated by the town of Dennis.
This town has their act together in the operation of several
'municipal' courses. This is a very flexible course that can be
enjoyed by all levels of golfers. Sand traps are filled with an
extremely foreign substance not found anywhere on the cape. Good
take - call for tee time.

Dennis Pines, Dennis - The older sister of the Dennis courses. This
is a tough but fair layout that will kill you from the back tees.
I would place this and Cranberry Valley in the category of courses
that need to be played by good golfers. I found this one enjoyable.
Interesting use of terracing in an attempt to make playing the hills
possible. The fairways are narrow compared to Carnberry.

Bass River, Yarmouth - This is a two-course-in-one layout. Front
nine is older interesting design and also fairly short. Back nine
is newer and exhibits less imagination - straight and long. Easy course
to play and the price, I believe, was reasonable.

Captains, Brewster - Everyone raves about this course but, alas,
I must admit that I haven't had the chance to play here. Sorry but
you have to rely on what everyone says - "Play it, it is great."

Cranberry Valley, Harwich - This is the epitome of the municipal
course success story. They move people through here at an unbelievable
rate. The course is worth it and you can choose you rlevel of abuse
by selecting any of four tee positions to play from. From the back
tee on what I believe is the 14th hole (a par five) you need to
get a 200 yard drive to leave the tee chute. Really challenging
and deserving its ranking in the top 100 public courses.

I'm tired and can't remember any others. I do know that they are
building at least two other courses in the Harwich/Dennis area.
One of these will be a municipal course.

Hope this list offers some assistance. Have fun.

    Paul,

I haven't played many cape courses so I'm hardly an expert.
However the word is that the Captains in Brewster is excellent
and that Cranberry Valley in Harwich is very good. Both are public
and popular - you should call for a tee time as soon as you can.
Have fun and hit it straight!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks Eric. I did play Cranberry Valley but wasn't overly
impressed with it. It was nice, but most of the people I talked
to down there said it was the best course on the Cape, so I was
expecting a little better course. I think the main reason I didn't
like the course was because the greens didn't hold at all. Normally
this isn't a problem, but at this course there are a lot of traps
directly in front of the green. This forces you to hit a high shot
over the trap to go at the pin, and the ball bounced so hard, nothing
would stay even close to the green. I play a titliest-DT so I do
get some spin on the ball, but not even spin can stop a ball that
bounces 10 to 15 feet high. This was happening even when hitting
    9 irons and full PW's.
I also played a course called "Iyanough Hills". It was located
somewhere near Sandwich. It wasn't bad, although considerably shorter
than C.V.. I wasn't expecting much though and this probably had
something to do with my liking the course. Also they were much
more friendly here than at C.V. and we got right off the tee with-
    out a tee time.
    	Thanks again for your response.

Too bad about Cranberry Valley, Paul. I felt pretty safe recommending
it - it has a real good reputation and Golf Digest had ranked it
among the top 50 public courses in the US of A. There is little
excuse for having greens like pavement - especially when we have
had a wet summer! It is a terrible feeling to continually watch
your good approach shots bounce and roll off the greens. Oh well,
I hope it didn't spoil your vacation.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll keep your experience in mind next

I played in a company Spring outing in Sandwhich, Saturday, at
Round Hill C C. Probably because it was cold and windy, and it
is a HILLY course (definitely not a walking course) it has small
landing areas and scores were up there! 100 was low gross! It
should play better in warmer weather but I wouldn't go out of my
way to play there again. Too punishing if you miss the landing
area. You roll down hills where you need rope safety lines to
get to your ball. I didn't think there were hills like that on
the cape. From the clubhouse you can see Provincetown.

    (FYI)

Round Hill is built on the Upper Cape which is known for its sand
hills and scrub oak forests. The course itself was built by Sam
Volpe of the Volpe Construction Company during the 1970's and has
    seen three different owners.

Originally the nines on this course were reversed with the last
five holes (starting with the aptly named Roller Coaster) providing
a torturous finish. The present owners took pity on the public and
the members and switched the nines around to its current configuration
placing those monsters in the middle of your round. Actually the
course has many excellent holes but everyone seems only to recall
that incredible stretch of hills and waste areas starting at the
    fifth hole.

The clubhouse was, at the time of its construction, the most expensive
and beautiful of its kind on the Cape providing views of Provincetown,
the cape sand dunes, etc. It is built on the second highest point
of ground on the Cape. (The Pave Paws installation, I believe, is
    on the highest ground.)

Sam Volpe is entombed just off the 17th fairway in a small 'cathedral'
    made of imported Italian marble.

It's not on the cape & it's not in a warm climate, but if you
are interested in a good vacation course, let me recommend Boyne
Highlands in the Northern part of the Lower Penisula of Michagan
near Petosky. They have 2 18's there and are building 1-2 more
(that was 2 yrs ago, they are probably done by now.) It is on the
Golf Digest Top 100 US courses list.

At the resort there is a small strip (it may even be grass).
Less that 1 mile away is a larger airport with a couple of runways.
This whole area of Michigan is called their Golf Coast. Within a
reasonable drive there several courses by Palmer, Nicklaus, and
	several others.

I have to second the Northern Michigan advice in -.1 Every year
I go to Michigan (Grand Rapids) and play in my brother-in-laws memeber
-guest and the past 2 years we've traveled north to tune up.

The first year we played a course called "The Bear" in Traverse
City. Designed by "The Bear" himself, it has to be the hardest
golf course I've ever played. Almost 7100 yards from the back tees,
my brother-in-law insists we play it all the way back. Lots of
elevated fairways, with drops of up to 10 feet if you miss the fairway.

Last year we played a course called "Treetops". This course was
designed by Robert Trent Jones. It's fairly new and hasn't matured
yet, but real nice. And very playable. I can't recall the name
of the town it was in but it wasn't near the coast.

My brother-in-law tells me there are plenty of coursed in Norhtern
Michigan that are worth the trip from Grand Rapids.

    Golf weekend report.....

Thanks to a reply in NOTE 204 we decided on New Seabury for our
    retreat.

We went down on Friday April 8th, you got it the weather conditions
were terrible. It was raining steadily, 40mph wind gust and cold.

The course conditions were still pretty good and managed to score
fairly well. ( I won't state the score, I don't want to embarras
    myself.).

Saturday the weather conditions improved NO RAIN to speak of but
the wind was still terrible. Managed to break 100 -just barley.

Sunday - IDEAL, still windy but now I knew how to play the wind
on this course. I should state there are two courses here.
There is the Blue course which rund along the ocean, and the Green
course which is on the inside (Bay side) of the resort.

The accomodations for sleeping were excellent, the green fees were
in line as well as the cart prices. The food and the service left
    a little to be desired.

All in all this is a good course for the average golfer, the Green
course is rated 67.5 and I think that is a little high. I would
reccomend this early package to anyone who want to get some good
golf in early down the good ole Cape of Cod. If memory serves me
coorectly it was around $190.00 for two nightes, two 18 rounds on
the Green course, two $5.00 meal tickets per person. Cart prices
for 18 were $22.10 and extra green fees were $20.00.

Anyone interested this special runs to the middle of June.

    See Ya,

    Monty

I was under the impression that after that time frame it was a little less

The answer to the carts is NO, they were $22.10 for 18...I overheard
one of the folks at the registration desk tell someone else that
they had just increased their rates. I can see why there is more
construction and remodeling going on there than you can believe.

When we arrived there on Friday the Pro-shop was in a construction
trailer, on Saturday the opened a new Pro-shop inside the main
building, they are also constructing a Snack-shop right next to the
pro-shop...we pay for all of this work. BUT IT WAS STILL WORTH

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summer-on-the-Cape-Fact-of-Life: You may not be able to get a good
tee time on the Cape on a weekend.

The policies for reserving tee times are all different but for one
small matter - they all give preference to the members. It might
not seem fair given the fact that you spend up to $25 per round
and they spend a paltry sum fo membership privileges ($250/year
at Captains!) but this is the way it is...(by the way, Captains

I would suggest trying one of the following courses as outlined
below using an autodialer (redial function) to get through:

Captains (in Brewster) - without any doubt this is the best public
course in the northeast (according to Golf Digest). Start dialing
at 5:00 PM Thursday for a Saturday tee time. (5:00 PM Friday for
Sunday times....) It is possible to get a pre-noon (just barely)
time here. Greens Fee is $25.
    Phone (508)896-5100

Cranberry Valley (in Harwich) - a good course with wide fairways
and large greens. Same reservation policy as Captains and a good
second choice course. A nicely run golf operation.
    Phone (508)432-4653

Bayberry Hill (in Yarmouth) - brand new course built by the town
to supplement Bass River play demand. Good design and an interesting
test. Remember that the course is brand new (immature greens, etc.).
You start dialing here on Friday at 7:00 AM for a Saturday time
(one day ahead). This will probably be your earliest possible tee
time since there are 'better' courses, so far, in the area.
    Phone (508)394-5597

Best of luck. Let us know what you found.

I played the Captains 3 weeks ago, and I'll have to agree that
it's the best course the Cape has!!! Beautiful fairways, and nice
greens. We settled for a 1:00 pm tee time though. Couldn't get
on in the morning. I also played Dennis Pines and it was nice,
but once again, played in the afternoon. I played in a twosome
with my brother-in-law, and we finished an 18-hole round in 4 hours
and 10 minutes. A very pleasing round. They accept tee times up
to 4 days in advance. The Captains accepts tee times starting at
5 pm 2 days in advance, but I called them at 5:20, and was told
there were no tee times left before 11:45, so I opted for the 1:00
tee time. Beleive me, it was well worth it. I personnally didn't
care to much for Cranberry Valley, but the last time I played there
was 2 years ago. Iyanough hills is a nice course though. And although
I haven't plaYed there, the 2 guys I played with at the Captains,
they played at Bayberry the day before, and it was a beautiful course,
even though it had opened only 3 weeks earlier. Good Luck.

Hi, for the person that was asking about Captains, and Cranberry
Valley....I have played both of them, and found them to be GREAT!
I especially liked Captains, but also found Cranberry Valley very
interesting. Great shape from tee to green...try it you'll love
it, but definitely, make reservations. We made them three months
in advance, and still couldn't get off until 2:30PM. But is was
worth the wait. Going down to New Seabury this year, only hope it
    is as good....

Play the New Seabury "blue" course, and definitely don't get conned into
playing the "green". I like Cranberry Valley! Dennis Pines is a good,
tough course -- lots of Cape Cod pine trees lining the fairways. Ocean's
Edge is nice, but is fairly expensive and the New Seabury "blue" is better.

The other course I'd play is Cape Cod CC in Falmouth. It is a Donald Ross
design, typically in good shape, lots of doglegs, hills, small greens, the
kind bunkers that you seem to hit when you are not sharp, etc. SOme of the
holes are real gems, like the 9th -- a 155 yd par 3 over water, with a lake
left and a pond right. The par 5s and some par 4s are eagle/birdie holes
if you go for it, but if you miss... The 14th par 4 "volcano" hole is
difficult to hit in two. As you can tell, I really like the course. My BGA
league plays a 3 day event there each spring. I'm not sure if I like it
because of the memories, or it is just a fun course. Has anyone else
played it?

    Quashnet Valley
    WillowBend
    Dennis Highlands.
Willowbend may be expensive, but people tell me it's great, and
Quashnet is supposed to be strong, too. Of course, over on Martha's

468.14Farm Neck -- thumbs up!!DINSCO::BURKEEIS Net Mgt SolutionsFri Aug 17 1990 14:5815
If you ever get the chance to play Farm Neck you should. There was an
article in the Globe last year about Farm Neck -- Cape Cod's hidden gem.
Reminded me a lot of New Seabury. Had some nice holes along the ocean. If
you were going to *only* play 18 in one day, take the ferry over from
Falmouth and play it. You won't regret it.

Dennis Highlands was built around the same time as Ocean Edge and Captains,
and got much less publicity. It's okay, and is less challenging than the
Dennis Pines course.

Not too long ago Cranberry Valley was listed as one of the top public
courses in the country. It is noticeably absent from the list.

I just got back from the Cape and was totally disgusted with the way
they allot tee times and run the courses. We played Dennis Pines, (3rd time
I've played there), and although it is a decent course, Crannberry Valley is
far and away the better conditioned, and more challenging course, in my
opinion. Unfortunately, we could not get a tee time earlier than 3:15pm on
either Cranberry or the Captains, and Ocean Edge said they were private. Both
Cranberry and the Captains said they would only take tee times over the phone,
starting at 4:30 pm two days ahead of time. My brother-in-law and I tried for
3 days, dialing until our fingers were practically bleeding, and got nothing
but busy signals. So we went to the Captains in person one day, about 4:10 pm
and asked if we could get a tee time. They said you have to start calling at
4:30. We then asked, what our chances were of getting a tee time before noon.
They said, unless a member skips his tee time, none. We then asked what our
chances were of getting a tee time before 2:00 pm. They said if you can get
thru on the phones before 5:00 pm, you might get lucky and get one. We then
asked how they could possibly call themselves a public course, when you can't
get a tee time there, unless a miralcle happens and an act of nature allows
you to get thru on the phones between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm. We got pretty much
the same story from Cranberry. Although both these courses are very well
groomed and nice courses, their managemnet stinks!!! If someone takes the
time to drive out to the course 2 days ahead of time, and there is a vacant
tee time, then they should be allowed to sign up for them. If they have a
problem with people cancelling out there tee times at the last minute, then
they should ask for a 1/2 price, non-refundable deposit from non-members,
instead of putting people thru this bull#&^&!!!

I can't understand the Cranberry/Dennis Pines comparison. Cranberry is
usually in good shape, but to me at least, it's an easy golf course -
especially if you drive it o.k. Dennis, on the other hand, can be your

I was talking with my father and told me that Cranberry Valley has had
a severe green 'kill'. I am not sure, but I think it happened very
recently. There are, apparently sevearl greens which are dead!

This is one of my favorite courses, and we were going to play there in

468.23WillowbendWAV14::MURPHYRWed Sep 05 1990 11:4940
Not too much has been said about this course but you should all know
that Willowbend, located in Mashpee near the New Seabury rotary, is
very possibly one of the best courses in New England.

Willowbend opened last year as a private course designed by the same
architect who laid out Dennis Highlands (Dr. Micheal Hurdzan (?)).
It appears as though the objectives at Willowbend were simple - there
was plenty of land and money (at that time) was no object. The result
is a very challenging, interesting, beautiful,...., uncharacteristic
    golf course.

Unfortunately (for them) Willowbend declared bankruptcy last year due
to the collapse of the housing market here and the bank assumed
management of the course and operates it on a semi-private basis
accepting a limited number of 'transients' each day.

The cost, although steep at $50 Guest Fee and $25 for 18 hole cart
fee, allows you to play in relative seclusion on a great track that has
you shooting over, around and through cranberry bogs. The course has
four tee positions which is flexible enough for all levels of play.

Although the course features many constructs (such as pot bunkers,
mounds, waste areas, water hazards edged by wooden ties and even a
variation on an island green) they are tastefully done and do not
distract from the feeling of the course.

The 18th is a sucker par five at around 480 from the back tees. A well
placed drive will leave you at the 210 marker which tempts you to try
to hit the green - a green which is made an island by the surrounding
cranberry bogs. It takes two great shots to make it.f

The staff their is more receptive and reasonable than the nasties that
man the Cape's "PUBLIC" courses. The range is both huge and free.

The fall should be an especially good time to play Willowbend. Give it
a try and tell me how you feel about it. We played 36 last Thursday

468.24Best course I've ever playedINDEV1::GSMITHI need two of everythingMon Sep 24 1990 13:0017

I just returned from a three day trip to NewSeabury. FANTASTIC golf
course! First time I've played there. We played teh Blue course on
Thursday and Friday, and the Green course on Saturday. A friend of a
friend is a member and he set up 10:00AM tee times all three days,
(can't beat that with a stick!).

I've played several courses on the Cape before, but none come close to
the Blue course at NewSeabury. Play it if you get the chance.

The greens on the Blue course are fast as lightning, and TOUGH. It's a
long course with manicured tees, fairways, roughs, greens, traps, and
anything else you can think of.

    GREAT time.

I can't stand it any longer..

I just called New Seabury for reservation this weekend..

Anyone have the latest Cape weather report and perhaps a report on
    course conditions ??

468.26Anyone played these???PENUTS::ETHERIDGETue Mar 10 1992 15:2218
I've got a question about a couple of courses down the cape, if anyone
has played them I would appreciate their input. The courses are...
    Balleymead (sp)
    Quasnett (sp)
    Baypoint

    The questions are
    1. What types of courses are these?
    2. What towns are they in?
    3. Cost to play

The reason I'm asking is in the Sunday Globe one of the Hotels were
offering golf packages for these course and some others that I have
already played. Trying to figure out if it is worth going through the
hotel/motel or doing it on my own.

    thanks Jon

I don't know much about those hotels. I do know the golf courses and
they are ok. The real course to play down there is called Willowbend.
It is a private golf course that is open to the public (call them
first) before the majority of Cape traffic hits. It is in Cotuit.
From the back tees (6800 yards) it is by far the best course I have
played in New England area. I have played all the famous Boston area
courses (The Country Club open course, Concord CC, Charles River,
Belmont etc) and this has them beat.

    Good Luck.

Has anyone ever played Quashnet Valley on the Cape?

We have 10:00 tee times for this Friday (vacation). This is
our annual golf trip. We are playing Cape Cod CC, Ballymeade,
Quashnet Valley, and Falmounth CC. Not a great selection, but
we got a late start this year, so we took what we could get
    tee times for.

468.29I'd play Quashnet Valley again!INDEV1::SMITHI need two of everything...Tue Sep 21 1993 17:0415

Nobody has played Quashnet Valley ...

Real nice track! It's kinda on the idea of BallyMeade, tight,
fairly short course. You don't need a driver, especially if
you can not keep it straight. Lots of dog legs, neat par 3's,
many traps. Course is in *very* fine condition. Fast greens.

It's got 3 par 3's on the fron, one on the back. We squeezed
in the round before the rain came! Got washed out on Saturday.. :^(

$36.00 with a cart... not too bad .

Quashnet Valley was in bad shap the 25th of Sept. The greens were
terrible. Bare spots, not mowed, pitted. I would suggest you try a
    different place.

bob, not happy he spent the money on Quashnet

    Bob..

maybe because of all the rain the greens got damaged? When I played,
which was right before all the rain, it was very well manicured.
With all the rain, they probably couldn't mow anything. I don't
care one way or another, I've only played it once, but it was
    beautiful that day!

My son is going to the cape with the High School Golf Team this weekend
and will be playing Dennis Highlands.

Anyone know the course enough to provide a Do's & Don'ts list for
any holes that might be tricky ?? You know, keep your drive to
the left on #2 for a better approach ......

thanks

Randy
