Note 498.0 Stow Acres DEC leagues No replies
FRAGLE::SARGENT 15 lines 13-JAN-1989 14:50
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone know if there are any openings in the DEC league
this summer at Stow Acres?? I have unsuccessfully tried the past
two years to get in this league, but I was always too late.
I finished last season with a 9 handicap for 18 holes with best
round at Stow north being a 76. Any information will help.
I can be reached at Barnum::Sargent or reply to this note.
Thanks,
Brian

| DIGITAL MAYNARD GOLF LEAGUE
TO: GOLF LEAGUE MEMBERS FEBRUARY 6, 1988
FROM: GOLF LEAGUE COMMITTEE
Once again, as we sit huddled in our warm, cozy homes in the dead of
winter it is time to think of warmer weather and the start of the golf
season and the Digital Maynard Golf League.
In spite of the may changes that were instituted in the league last
year the overwhelming sentiment was that last year's league turned out
very well. This was echoed by the the responses to the survey sent out
during the Christmas holiday. In total, 111 surveys were returned
which represents a sample of approximately 35%. By a vast majority the
comments were positive and some excellent suggestions were included.
Responses to the specific questions were as follows:
- With respect to the location of the banquet - 72% responded that
the location does not effect their decision to attend. The
primary criteria was the quality of the food and the atmosphere of
the location.
- On the question of 3 outings the feedback was also very favorable.
73% were interested in a weekend outing in May at Stow Acres. We
have already booked tee times from 9AM - 1PM on Saturday May 20th
and we will be publishing an application and more information at a
later date. 55% are interested in an outing during the Fourth of
July week and 81% were interested in the August outing.
Information on these will also be published later.
- For the Memorial Day holiday week, 41% were interested in a 3-club
event versus 32% for a scotchie. So a three club it will be.
Thank you all for spending the time and providing your input. It was
appreciated and will be useful in managing the league this year.
As was the case last year, Stow Acres will be using tee times and we
will be working with them to eliminate the problems of slow play and
late tee times that run into darkness. Some good ideas are being
worked on.
For this year the dues and greens fees for regular season play will be
$190 per full-time member. This is a $10 increase and covers an
increase in the weekly green fees. Dues for alternates will be $10 as
it was last year. As was the case previously, full payment must be
submitted with the application. Teams should submit only one
application with full payment for both.
Instructions and the blank application are attached. Please read them
carefully. There will not be a hardcopy distribution of this message,
it will only be sent on the network. In the event that people have
changed their network address we could use your help in making sure
that all members and alternates receive their applications. If you see
someone from last year's league, please ask them if they have received
the message. If not, have them contact Barry Schliesmann at 223-8838
or BEES::SCHLIESMANN. Thank you.

If you are a fair-to-average golfer who likes to golf for the fun
of it (and not so much the scoring of it), then perhaps you'd like
to be partners in the Digital Golf League (Nashua/Merrimack).
I have not been able to golf for two years (minor medical reasons),
but would like the opportunity to get out at least once each week
now that I can play again.
My handicap is high...so we'd be looking at golfing in the B Division.
If you're interested, please send me mail on node VMSDEV::WEISENFELD
or call me at DTN 381-1469.
Golf league registration begins March 20, so please respond by then.
Cheers,
Marian

I am hoping to join the N.H. DEC league this year (I'm new to
the company) and am looking for a partner. I would prefer to
play in the A division, I like the blue tees, but basically
just want to play. If you need a partner let me know. You
can send me mail to SOCIAL::STACK or call me at DTN 251-1218.
P.S.
Let me make it perfectly clear that the only reason I want to
play in the A division is because I like the challenge of playing
from the back. I also feel that it improves my game by
providing more of a challenge. I do not want to play in the
A division because I'm too good (i.e. snob) to play in other
divisions. I will play in any division, any time, anywhere,
under any conditions and with anyone. Please let me know if
you're interested.

I wouldn't think that any DEC league has any restrictions on women,
certainly the Maynard Golf League (MGL) has many women in it. The
only prerequisite is to be a DEC employee, so if the other person in
your couple is not one, then he can't play. If there is space, you
and another DEC employee can join the league as a team, if there is
one space for you, the you will be assigned a partner.
Mary still is the secretary (and my partner) at MGL. dtn 297-3085.

I've done several "dir/title=" and have not been able to find
what I am looking for.
Way up here in the Augusta, Maine, League, we play a 2 person
team format. Each hole is worth 2 points, 1 point for low gross
and 1 point for low team net.
I have been tasked to find out how other leagues play for a possible
change in our own format.
I once played in a league with teams made up of A,B,C and D players.
Play would be A vs A, B vs B, etc.....Three points per match, low
gross, low net and match play.
Anybody have any variations of "Team" play they care to share ??

The format that our league uses is the same as yours with the
addition of low individual total for nine and low team total
for nine (both net scores), making a total of 20 possible points.
I have played in a league where the format was two man teams,
but you were only playing for 1 point per hole for best net
(there was no team point per hole).
I prefer having the additional team point, it keeps both players
in the match on every hole...

Jim,
One of the formats we tried at Polaroid that seemed to be effective
also involved two-person teams.
You played for three points per hole using net scores:
A1 vs A2 1 point
B1 vs B2 1 point
Team A vs Team B Best Ball 1 point
A total of 27 points possible and...
To alleviate the tendency to pad a handicap there was an incentive
tied to your net score - if you were below or even par using your net score
then your point total was unaffected but if you were over par using
your net score then points were subtracted from your team total.
It was very possible to have a negative point night. It did tend
to keep people a little more honest about their handicaps since
there was pain involved during the padding process.
No system really works. The 'schemers' always manage to find a loophole
and get the system to work for them against its design or intent.
Good luck with your search (Hope to see you in July)!

The PSG League (Merrimack/Nashua) consists of two flights of
seven two-person teams. Each week the teams play each other for
three points, total. Whichever individual wins the most holes,
gets a point, whichever team wins the most holes get a point.
Halves get 1/2 pt. This past year only 2-3 of 14 teams were out
of playoff contention (top 3/flight) before the final week. Seems
to work great, as long as the handicap system is fair.

Each player carries an "Average" based on the points he or she should

This system is really aimed at the higher handicapped golfers. It's
easier for a new(er) player to contribute to a team without the
pressure of playing head to head. When we were starting the league
(Yes I once did play in the DEC league) we (the officers) were all
low handicappers (3 or 4) but we expected the average to be like 12
or 13 (for 9 holes). My feeling was that the league would never get
off the ground if some people got a ton of strokes in a match and still
got beat into submission. So I proposed this quota system so that
everybody could contribute to the success of the team but nobody would
have to take the heat of loosing a match 5 and 4. As I said this is a
good system if the handicaps are high. However it stinks for the lower
handicaps. At a 4 handicap I needed 7 pars just to break even then 2
bogies for 20 points. That means I have to shoot around 38 all the
time to help a team. On those nights when I shot 42 or 43, I might
as well have lost a match 5 and 4.
This method of scoring is good IF you have the right makeup of players
in the league.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am in the process of trying to set up a golf league here in Mpls. I was
wondering if anyone had a program (VMS-based please) that I could use to
compute score, hdcps, etc? We have not decided on the format of the league
so I don't know exactly what capabilities this program will have to
support.
However, this is going to be a "fun" league. Not real competitive and the
format isn't all that important. A good program to help with the paper
work could dictate the league format and I don't think anyone here
would care all the much.
I haven't written a program from scratch since 1977 and don't want to
start now. If I have to modify one it's no big deal. But I would like
one to get started.
Gene.

I wrote a bunch of programs for the CXO golf league. It's an entire
database program, multi-threaded and uses DECNET. The whole league is
run by it. People go out and play their matches at the assigned courses,
(we play at 7 different courses). They come into work, and run the scoring
program "KEEPER.EXE" which knows the scorecards for all the courses, (it's
easy to add more courses), and enter their scores, hole by hole. Then,
the software computes all the points, counts, eagles, birdies, pars, bogeys,
etc. And automatically updates the database with the match information,
This is all done via DECNET. At the end of the week, me (the secretary)
generates the standings report, and mails it out to the league. Match
confirmation is accomplished via email. When the matches are entered
a copy of what was entered is mailed out to the players (and/or subs)
Then, via the KEEPER.EXE program (all menu driven) you can get online
statistical information, call up old matches, show available subs, show
team information, player information, etc. So far, it's been working
fine. Anyone can access the program via DECNET, if your intersted in
seeing what it's like, try it, You can try an enter a match (PLEASE DON'T
ANSWER YES TO THE MATCH ENTER CONFIRMATION QUESTION!! YOU'LL REALLY ENTER
A MATCH!!.
All you have to do is:
$ RUN HOT""::KEEPER
It may take awhile to load the courses from back east, but once
they're loaded it's all done locally except for a few DECNET
queries.

If you can tell us your (or even another existing) package could
help us, we would be happy to talk about it very soon !!
Another issue is I don't know anything on golf and I suppose you
need some golf knowledge to be able to use the system ....?!! or
is it so excellently documented everyone can use it easily ?
(for example : can press people use terminals to trace the tournement

I don't think my system is what your looking for. The one I
have keeps track of weekly team matches. It calculates handicaps
and prints various reports such as weekly standings. It sounds
like you want something similar to what they would use in pro
tournements, keeps a leader board and such.
I would suggest contacting someone from the Digital Seniors Classic

Note 708.0 CXO League Management Program 3 replies
CXCAD::FONTANA "Eric Fontana DTN 522-3526" 46 lines 3-AUG-1989 11:25
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the gizillions (well 14) of *PLEASE* can I have your
league management program for our league requests, I've decided that
I should make it available to other leagues for use, so what I'm asking
is that do you, the golfers like it, and how should I make it generic enough
for all leagues to use. Here's how it works:
There is a database server program that runs on my CVAX workstation, it
accepts up to 32 simultaneous links at once. There is user interface program
called KEEPER.EXE which also resides on my workstation. People go out and
play their matches, then bring the scorecard into work. They run the KEEPER
program, and they enter their match, on an electronic scorecard, yes, KEEPER
knows the scorecards for all the courses we play, an ASCII file describes
each course, handicap, mens/womens pars, etc. After they enter the scores,
KEEPER calculates #pars, #birdies, #eagles, #bogeys, all the points won,lost
etc. It then updates the central match database, and formats and mails
a message to all parties involved, including subs. KEEPER also provides
a wealth of online information, such as player stats, flight standings,
team schedules, sub information, etc. I'm inviting people to try out the
KEEPER program to see if your league might be able to use it. You can
try the "Enter A Match" option if you like, follow the steps, but when
the "Confirm Match Entered?" question answer NO, otherwise our league
may get messed up! To try out the program simply use the command:
$ RUN HOT""::KEEPER
Our league has a point system like this:
We have 2 man teams. Each team is scheduled to play another team at a
particular course. The format is basically match play, the low handicap
on one team plays the low on the other. They play match play (with handicap)
hole by hole, If they win the hole, they get 2 points, if they tie they get
1 point. So, you play for 18 points for match play, then there is 2 additional
points for your net score verses your opponents net score, then 2 more
additional points for a team combined net score. The most you can win is 44
points.
$ RUN HOT""::KEEPER
After trying out the program, please post requests, etc, and related
information here, or in our notes conference:
ADD ENTRY HOT::CXO_GOLF
Thanks,
/Eric

The format that our league uses is the same as yours with the
addition of low individual total for nine and low team total
for nine (both net scores), making a total of 20 possible points.
I have played in a league where the format was two man teams,
but you were only playing for 1 point per hole for best net
(there was no team point per hole).
I prefer having the additional team point, it keeps both players
in the match on every hole...

Note 850.0 Digital Maynard Golf League Update No replies
KAHRU::MGL 34 lines 18-JAN-1990 16:14
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: All Digital Maynard Golf League Members
From: John Jakubowski / Tony Robbertz
Subject: Committee membership elections
During the registration period for individuals interested in running for
election to the golf committee, two people expressed interest. Fortunately,
they were vying for different positions. As a result, there is no need for
an election.
The new committee members are:
Ken LeBlanc - Golf Systems Administrator
Ken has been a Digital employee for 8+ years and a member of the golf league
for the last 2. For the last 6 years he has been involved in business
application design/development and bring a wealth of systems and programming
experience to the position.
Sam Pruett - Rules & Prizes Chairman
Sam previously was the Rules Chairmen on the committee and decided to run for
expanded position when the election was called. He is a 27 year employee with
Digital and has been a member of the league for 25 of those years. He has vast
experience in purchasing and should be a real asset in his expanded role.
Welcome to Sam and Ken. The term of office for both these positions will be
two years.
The first committee meeting to begin organizing the 1990 season will be held
shortly and a mailing to all 1989 members and alternates will take place in
mid February. If your node has changed send a message to KAHRU::MGL or to
MLCSSE::Kataisto so that you'll promptly recieve the February mailing.

1990 Hoodkroft Golf league has openings
Due to movement of personnel to and from the Salem NH facilities there
are several openings for golfers in Salem's Hoodkroft golf league.
Hoodkroft GC is a nine hole course in Derry NH. The course is wide
open, but does have allot of water to contend with. (five of the nine
holes have potential water hazards, and I've seen people hit the water
on two others) The course is owned by a non profit association and
therefore is kept in good condition (ie nobody is sucking the money out
of the course) The league itself is a fairly small league, fourteen
teams of two each plus subs. There are no separate flights so high
handicappers play against scratch players. The league plays on
Wednesday nights with starting between 3:45 and 5:00. Greens fees are
$9 paid to the course on a weekly basis. League Dues are $20 per
person, subs don't have to pay dues, but cannot attend the year end
banquet if they don't. This year the league will be starting around
the 25th of April (weather and course dependent). If you don't have a
partner you can still sign up and when we have the list of people who
want to play, we will let people without partners know who else needs
one and you people can get together, but we need to have a final list
of partners by April 5th. In order to hold a place send mail to
CVG::PKELLEY, or ULCS87::SOUZA. Spots for new members will be assigned
after March 9th, old members of the league have until then to save
their spots. Handicaps will be established by playing two rounds at
hoodkroft previous to the start of the season. People who don't have a
handicap established by the date of the first match of the season will
play scratch until a handicap is established. Any level of golfer is
acceptable, but we do expect league members to know the USGA rules of
golf and to observer proper etiquette.

Your best bet is to get ahold of the people that run the Maynard League

contact the orginator of the notes. Good Luck.

| Brian,
I second Mark's recommendation about checking into the Maynard League as
a sub. If you are at all flexible in when you can play a sub can play more
than a member. The key is being available. Subs who are available tend to
get the first call the next time you are looking for a sub. (You're a
lead pipe cinch if you help take a few points too!)
You will also meet a lot of good folks, maybe even someone who is looking
for a partner the next year. Subs have higher standing to get into the
league than one who hasn't participated at all.

I would really like to join the Stow Golf League next year. Does
anyone know how I get in? This is my first real year of golfing and
I really love the sport. I score in the 50s pretty consistently
now. (for 18 my score is usually under 110) I'd appreciate any
information.

467.67 | look in the Maynard Golf League notesfile | KALVIN::ELENEHAN | | Thu Sep 03 1992 15:25 | 10 |
| Rachael,
Look in KAHRU::MGL notesfile. They will post the application
sometime in the spring. You just have to apply. If you can find
a current member or an alternate, apply as a team. That will get
you on the higher position in the priority list than if you
applied as a single.

My guess is that the person moderating/mantaining it either can't do
it anymore or left the company.
In any case, the MGL is alive and well. I was told by one of the
members of the committee that we should expect some mailing soon.
Contact Mary Donahue dtn 297-3085. She is the registrar.
