Beautiful shot - sailed through the air and rolled perfectly into the hole - no bouncing against the stick or anything. YOU DIDN'T HIT EM THAT WAY WHEN WE WERE PARTNERS IN THE MARLBORO GOLF LEAGUE. HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING LESSONS ???? I GUESS, NOW, YOUR READY TO HIT THE PGA GOLF TOUR (SENIOR CIRCUIT). HOW FAR WAS THE PIN ? WHAT CLUB DID YOU USE ? <<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 59.0 Hole-in-One!! 12 replies STK01::LITBY "-Is it playable? -No, not yet!" 9 lines 7-JAN-1987 08:53 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On suggestion from Tim Peacock (HTLANA::PEACOCK), here's a topic about holes-in-one. Use it to tell us about aces in any form, including those made by yourself. I haven't managed to make a hole-in-one myself, so someone else will have to start it off... -- Mr Litby ================================================================================ Note 59.1 Hole-in-One!! 1 of 12 CHAMP::KEVIN "Kevin O'Brien" 20 lines 7-JAN-1987 18:34 -< When you're hot you're hot >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll be glad to start it off! I was lucky enough to have an ace. It was in a practice round for the member guest at my club in Aug 1985. I'd always thought that if I got a hole in one, it would be a trick shot.. like hit it off the hosel, hit a tree, bounce off a rock, hit the pin then roll into the hole. This one (the first one I'd seen) was actually a good shot. It was on the third hole at Burlington Country Club, par 3 176 yards. The green slopes dramatically from left to right. I hit a five iron at the left center of the green, it landed softly on the green and rolled slowly down the hill, hit the pin and dropped in. I played the hole 5 more times that weekend. I had 3 birdies and 2 pars. The following Sunday we were playing our final match in the tournament. One of our opponents hit a three iron and it rolled in for an ace. I hit my five iron 1 foot short of the hole for a tap in bird and lost the hole. It was quite an experience to see 2 holes-in-one in the same weekend! KO ================================================================================ Note 59.2 Hole-in-One!! 2 of 12 HTLANA::PEACOCK 20 lines 8-JAN-1987 02:07 -< ACE >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got my only ace in 1978 at the University of Georgia golf course in Athens, Ga. It came on number 13, which is a 182 yard par 3. The tee's are elevated above a lake, and the shot is almost entirely over water to a green that is at about five feet lower than the elevation of the tee. The green for number 12 is very near the tee for number 13, and as I addressed the ball, a foursome on number 12 was putting. One member of that foursome asked his partner if he was away, the reply was yes, but lets watch the hole in one first. We all laughed, I then took a few practice swings, and put a six iron shot on the front of the green. It rolled straight in the hole, never hit the stick! Needless to say, I was excited, but the fellow on number 12 green was beside himself. He kept shouting, I CALLED IT, I CALLED IT!!! It took 15 minutes to continue play, as the foursome I was in, the foursome on 12, and the foursome that was letting us hit to 13 had to gather around to discuss it. I finished the round in fairly good fashion, but my poor brother-in-law couldnt hit a lick for the rest of the day. Incidentally, this came about only 9 days after my father aced number 16 at the same course! ================================================================================ Note 59.3 Hole-in-One!! 3 of 12 SPMFG1::WELLSPEAK "Paul Wellspeak - SPO 243-2837" 31 lines 14-JAN-1987 23:40 -< How about a Double-Eagle? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've never had a hole-in-one but I have witnessed one. An opponent of mine in the Dec Westfielf league aced no. 10 at Southampton C.C.. It is a short hole, about 140-150 yards but the green is extremely tough rolling from right to left and back to front. The pin is almost always in the front or left side of the green, which leaves a very difficult down hill putt. On this occasion, my opponent hit a beautiful shot that landed about 2 feet behind and a foot to the right of the pin and spun backwards and in. It psyched me right out and I think I double-bogeyed the hole. The closest I ever came to a hole-in-one was 4 inches on the 1st hole at East Mountain C.C. in Westfield. It is a par 4 thats listed at about 320-335 yards but in reallity isrobably about 265-275 yards. Ther was a 4-some on the green putting, but the starter told us to tee off anyway figuring we couldn't reach the green. I really don't blame him either, because it was in the end of March and we had just finished telling him it was our first time out this year. It was a beautiful day, about 70 degrees and the course was packed. I hit a 3-wood and nailed it with a slight draw. It bounced well in front of the green and rolled up on just missing one of the guys putting and stopped 4 inches behind the hole. Needless to say it was the best tee shot I hit all year. I did eagle the hole though so that was some consolation, but I ended up 5 over that day. I also managed a double-eagle on the 12th hole at Southampton. It's a very short par 5 that actually should be a par 4. With a good tee shot you almost always have an iron into the green and on that particular day the tees were up and I hit a Driver and a 6-iron into the cup. I was told it was the 2nd such score on that hole that year. Paul W. ================================================================================ Note 59.4 Hole-in-One!! 4 of 12 SUCCES::ASTON 15 lines 8-MAY-1987 21:07 -< listen to your spouse now and then >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got an ace May 25th, 1985 at the Saddle Hill C.C. in Hopkington Mass. 153 yds. with a 7 iron. I remember it well.... I was in the middle of painting the house and for a few weeks some friends of mine had wanted to go play. I really didn't want to, I just wanted to get the house done. My wife kept on bugging me to leave the house for a day and relax, play golf or something. I said, o.k. I'll do something, it was the first game of the Celtics-Lakers play off series and I said, I'll relax and watch that. No.... PLAY GOLF!!!!! This went on for an hour or 2, finally I dusted off the clubs and went. I really didn't want to play, I duffed my way around the course wishing I was someplace else, no birdies, no pars, even boggies were few and far between. Gets to the 16th hole, in it went! The Celtics won, and I ended up with 103! (about). ================================================================================ Note 59.5 Hole-in-One!! 5 of 12 STKHLM::LITBY "You're away!" 7 lines 11-MAY-1987 07:48 -< Hmmm... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .4 How can anyone NOT want to play golf? I'm not sure if you should be allowed to write to this conference... :-) -- Mr Litby ================================================================================ Note 59.6 Hole-in-One!! 6 of 12 SUCCES::ASTON 5 lines 11-MAY-1987 19:59 -< FORGIVE ME!! Give me a better lie >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know, I must be out of my mind!!! Celtics, ya, maybe. Paint the house, BLASPHEME!!!!! Hang me in a clown suit......! It'll it'll never happen again, HONEST!!!! ================================================================================ Note 59.7 Hole-in-One!! 7 of 12 WLDWST::WASH "Enjoying the experience" 26 lines 16-OCT-1987 09:45 -< Once, upon a tyme >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My only ace occurred in 1969. I was a high school student, involved in my weekly head-to-head competition with my best friend. It was at a local public course (Murray Park Golf Course) in Porterville, Ca. I believe it was #5 hole, par3 150 yds. (my memory may be askew on the particulars). The hole was straight ahead and elevated from the tee off point. I lifted one in the air, thinking it overshot the green and ended up in the bushes or the road behind them. We searched nearly everywhere else before finally looking in the cup. There it was, in all it's majesty - we determined it may have actually landed in the hole directly, since we saw no evidence of divots or the like. If my memory serves me right, I went on to lose that ball on the next hole and lost the round altogether. I'm not sure if I ever won any of those matches anyhow. I (here comes a round of "boo's and hisses'") played absolutely NO golf for over 15 years after that school year; and since resumming the game (yes, I'm loyal to it now) the past 2-3 years, I have come close to a few more, but you know how that goes . . . . I have heard that Bing Crosby had 37 aces in his golf life; any input on that? Also, there is apparently some guy who plays all the shorter courses here in the SF Bay Area that has managed to collect 55 aces so far. Me, I'll patiently wait for #2. Marvin ================================================================================ Note 59.8 Hole-in-One!! 8 of 12 OCKER::VETTE "Startle your day with Schizo Pops!" 30 lines 22-NOV-1987 23:04 -< Who me? Couldn't be... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got my first Hole-In-One (my first eagle!) yesterday morning, 22-Nov-1987, at aproximately 7:am, on the 9th hole at the Bardwell Valley Golf Course. That's in Bexley, a suburb of Sydney (Australia). The hole is a 100 metre par 3, I teed off with my pitching wedge. I didn't even realise I had done the deed until I arrived at the green. About half the green is tucked away behind a large mound, and the sadistic green keeper had placed the cup around where it couldn't be seen from the tee. Also, the two players that had called us on had walked down the hill from the green, and couldn't see the green either. So we were walking up to the green, and I was wondering where my ball was when one of the two guys in front of us went to pull the stick out, and said "I think one of you blokes has got a Hole-In-One". I was totally stunned, I had been thinking that a Hole-In-One would be nice, but when it actually happens it's just unbeleivable! That put me on 37 (par 31) for the front 9, my best ever result for 9 holes, but I was so unnerved after the 9th, that I went and hit 49 (par 32) on the back 9, for a total of 86. Still my second best score yet, I will have to wait till another round to beat 80 on that course. Ah, summer's wonderful isn't it? Oh... sorry, you guys have finished yours haven't you... Lindsay (who plays every week of the year... Damn!, there I go again...) P.S. Seriously, You folks who have to put away the clubs in winter have my sympathies, I would hate to be forced to stop playing for even 1 month a year by the weather. ================================================================================ Note 59.9 Hole-in-One!! 9 of 12 GRAMPS::ASTON 8 lines 2-DEC-1987 18:53 -< Bingo! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ref. .7 Bing must have been playing poker while golfing to have 37 aces. I don't know how many he had but I do remember seeing a list just a while back of will the top all time acers's and didn't see his name. The joker in the ISUSU(?) commercial wasn't there either. ================================================================================ Note 59.10 Hole-in-One!! 10 of 12 MSEE::KELLEY "Keep_it_in_play, TITANIUM_X-STIFF" 17 lines 21-MAR-1988 09:08 -< It's GREAT....! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I never thought that I would ever be able to add my personal ACE to this note, but now I can. I got my first ACE Friday 18-MAR-1988 at Stow Acres 17th hole (South course). The tees were all the way up front as they were on all the holes, so the hole was playing about 146 yards, the wind was left to right. I hit the ball a little thin with the eight iron and to be honest at the time I hit it, I was not pleased with it. I did not get to see it go in the hole, infact I didn't even think about it going in. We got up to the green and didn't see the ball, so I walked around the back of the green and checked the trap. It wasn't there either, so for the heck of it I checked the cup. I think everyone on the course must have known I got an "ACE", I just yelled it out, it was GREAT....!!! Gene ================================================================================ Note 59.11 Hole-in-One!! 11 of 12 GRANPA::KVENEZIO 13 lines 4-MAY-1988 16:01 -< always looking for another >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mine came in '83. Sept 11 to be exact. CC of Fairfax. Fairfax VA. (amazing how you remember the details) 219 yds from the back tees. 2 bounces, in the hole!! I retired the ball immediately. Now for the bad news. (how could a hole-in-one be bad news you ask?) I'm playing in my bosses 3-day member guest. Biggest tourney of the year. The club is offering 2 Cadillacs for an ace . 1 on the front nine, 1 on the back. Needless to say mine was on the wrong hole. I didnt even get a bag of tees. I did treat myself to vanity tags for the car "IACED 1". Still looking for #2. Ken Congrats to you Gene .10 ================================================================================ Note 59.12 Hole-in-One!! 12 of 12 NETWRK::GSMITH "Double Trouble " 16 lines 12-SEP-1988 12:18 -< close... but no cigar >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A hole in one! No..... I have never been lucky enough to get one, but some day. I am suprised that there are not a lot more hole in ones, at *all* levels. The reason I say this is that most golfers play the same course regularly, know the greens, which club to hit, and the better golfers *usually* get it on the green. I don't consider myself as one of the better golfers, but I do get on par-3's regularly. Why haven't I been lucky enough to put one in? Interesting isn't it? I have put them on *last* week's pin placements, a couple inches away on many occasions, but NEVER IN! I mean, you'd think that I am due.... But I say that every year when dear season comes along too.... :^) Smitty <<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 230.0 Gene "ACE" Kelley 18 replies MSEE::POULSEN 10 lines 18-MAR-1988 19:00 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would like to announce that I had the thrill of witnessing your moderator (Gene "ACE" Kelley) shooting a hole in one. It was on the 17th hole at the south course on Stow Acres. Not a bad way to start off the season. Please join me in congratulating him on the thrill of a life time!! That's no cheapie par 3. Could you actually see the ball go in since sometimes the cup is hidden? Where were the tees? Any wind? What club did he use? Details man! We need details! I couldn't wait to get in here this morning to brag about my first "ACE" and I found you had already done it for me. The unfortunate part is that I didn't get to see it go in the hole...! Could see the pin from the tee, but not the actual hole. We walked up to the green, didn't see the ball, so I walked around the back to check the trap that is behind the green. Not there either, so I said what the heck, I'll check the cup just for grins. Well, I'll be damned I got my first "ACE". I was ecstatic, I think everyone on the course must have heard me yelling....!!!!! BTW, it was tough to hit my next tee shot, it went about 40 yards and that was down hill...! It was a GREAT feeling and it has ONLY been 26 years since I started playing this great game! Gene (I_FINALLY_GOT_MY_FIRST_ACE) ================================================================================ Note 230.5 Gene "ACE" Kelley 5 of 18 MSEE::KELLEY "Keep_it_in_play, TITANIUM_X-STIFF" 10 lines 21-MAR-1988 08:44 -< 8 iron >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE .3 Ya, as I stated in my last reply, I couldn't see it go in. The tees were ALL the way up front on all the holes, so it was playing about 146 (not 186). The wind was left to right, I hit an 8 iron. I wish I could say that I hit it great, I hit it thin, but I don't care it was still GREAT....!!!!! It's too bad you didn't get a chance to see it go in because that's all part of the thrill. I guess you'll have to do it again so you can see it go in. BTW how much did it cost you at the bar? <<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 746.0 Another Ace!! Sigh!!!! 1 reply MUSKIE::HAAG 35 lines 1-SEP-1989 11:03 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last Sat. a guy I was playing golf with made an ace on the 12th hole - a 125 yard par 3. This is the second time I have seen this happen. The first time was by a friend of mine who has a 5 hdcp (mine is about 14) a couple of years ago. When my friend made his ace I rationalized that being a good golfer his chances of getting an ace were much better than mine - just because he hits more shots where he is aiming at than I do. Not so last Sat. I just hooked up with this guy and his pal so that we would have a foursome. This guy shot 55 on the front nine and a 60 on the back nine with a 1 on the 12th hole. And the ace was a "missed" PW and ended up a line drive that landed 20 yards short of the green, rolled on, and eventually went into the cup after hitting the pin dead square and hard enough to vibrate the whole thing. The first few moments after the ball went in the hole I was a little envious although very happy for the guy. I rationalized again that since I could hit the ball better than this guy my chances of getting an ace should be higher. And, although close on several occasions, I have never scored an ace. So how could this be? Then it dawned on me. How often does the average weekend player hit the ball EXACTLY where they are aiming? With any club? Almost never. Indeed, most aces are made on "missed" shots. Even Art Wall (who has scored an incredible 44+ aces) admits it takes more luck than skill to score an ace. Being a scratch golfer helps, but only a little. It seems luck and fate have more to do with it than anything else. And how do you factor something like fate into the equation?? Today is my anniversary and my wife has encouraged me to go out and get a round in. Her thinking is that while I have a hard time remembering our anniversary, it is unlikely that I will ever forget the day I make an ace. Gene.

Sigh!!!! 1 of 1 SANFAN::GRANT_JO "Don't say `shank'" 13 lines 1-SEP-1989 19:36 -< ACE IN THE HOLE >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It must be strange to see someone shoot 110 or so and skull a wedge into the cup. It can happen to anyone. But it seems logical that the more often you play golf, and the more often you hit it near the pin, the more likely you are to put one in the cup. Luck is what you need, but you can help yourself to get lucky by hitting it on line. I scored an ace a couple of years ago, fortunately on a good shot. It was definitely luck that the ball went in - but haven't we all at least come pretty close? I say, play alot and hit `em straight, and sooner or later your turn will come.

Well, Lightning struck yesterday at about 8pm. Number 17 at Charmingfare, a seven iron that looked like it had green written all over it. The swing felt great and when I found the ball in the air it was just crossing over the left hand trap. I watched as the ball pulled back toward the center of the green and dropped. Mike started it all by saying that it was in the hole, but Tim just laughed and said it rolled off the back side, I just said that the ball had green written all over it. Mike ran up to the green and as Tim and I arrived I said he must be right because I don't see the ball and I know it was supposed be there somewhere. Mike arrived at the cup first and up went the hands... TOUCHDOWN!!! I just couldn't believe it, still don't know if I do. I guess even hackers can get lucky... Oh, by the way, Tim and I play for beers, and When we first started we jokingly said that an ace was worth a case of Hinekins... Who would have ever gussed... Dave

Bronzed, I don't think so... For right now it's on top of the television sitting between the ship's clocks. I have been thinking of having a frame made up and putting the ball, score card and some pictures of the hole in it. Another funny little twist is that in playing #10, I lost the ball in the left hand rough. We looked all over for it and couldn't find it. So I dropped a ball and played out the hole. Then on #11, I pushed one into the right hand rough. So I walk up to my ball and put my bag down and set up to hit my next shot. Looking up I see another ball, and sure enough it was the ball that was lost. So after finishing #11, I change back to the old ball. Now that old ball will forever be part of my collection of golf memories. I guess it is starting to sink in a little. Dave

The base had a plaque with the space for name, date, course, hole, yardage, club, playing companions. He got a picture of the foursome, but a picture of the hole would be excellent. How about the club house, and the scorecard framed together. Congratulations, Daryl

Hole-in-one from a Hacker Last Saturday Sept 22nd I had the good fortune of hitting a good shot that turned into a hole-in-one due in large part to a lucky bounce. The course was the Sheraton El Conquistador Resort course (9 Hole Course), Tucson, Arizona. The hole was number 7, 111 yards with an elevated green (played to about 120). Hit a nine iron. After registering the hole-in-one with the club pro I called Dunlop today. For $31 they will engrave the score card and mount the ball on a plaque. My oponent on the hole hit a very good shot (3 feet from pin and made birdie). Like to hear from other Digital Golf noters who have had the good fortune on hitting a hole-in-one. Last year my partner in the Digital MK golf league (TJ Whitelaw) made a hole-in-one at Bretwood CC, Keane NH during the Digital MK golf day. Suggest we start a Digital Hole-in-one club. Well, just to take you back to about March of this year. After being and member and playing at Prestwick St Cuthbert G.C. in Ayrshire , Scotland for the last 15 years - I was playing in a Sunday morning sweep and came to the 9th - 176 yards. Took out a 7 iron , nice swing, shouts - go in the hole !! and son of a gun, it bounces 3 inches to the right of the hole, jumps forward and spins back into the hold for a UNO ! Many celabrations then followed, and I was put to bed early ! Funny things was that the follwing round , I hit the same club and the ball finished about 8 inches short of going in again. I have been close quite a few times since then, but will never forget the feeling of it actually happening. Just to finish off the story, I was playing on Sunday past, got to the 13th, hit an 8-iron down-wind for my second, shouts go in the hole, and would you belive it it pitches, clips the stick, bounces on and spins back into the hole for an eagle 2. This plus another eagle at our par 5 8th helps me onto a 68 scratch (71 par), and won me the Sunday morning sweep again. Must be those Sunday mornings that do it !!! Walker

On Wednesday, a member at my club got a hole in one. Great for him, but what's the big deal? He got in on a Par 4....The hole is short for a Par 4, only 260 yards. The green is protected by traps in the front and both sides. Larry used a 3 wood. The ball landed about 20 yards from the green, bounced over the trap and rolled in.. Well I got my fisrt hole-in-one on Saturday Aug. 6 on #8 of Stow Acres North. A nice 6 iron about 165 yds. Ball landed about 8 feet short of the hole and rolled right into the hole. Pin was positioned front left behind the bunker, I knew it would be close if it was the right club, but never even thoght about it going in. I was, needless to say, very excited. Plus we won the hole and 5 skins. :-) The ball went directly into my bag. I'll have to do something with it. Does anyone know if there is some way to "register" this with the course or does the USGA have some kind of "club". I think it would be neat to have some sort of certificate. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for my wallet) we did not get back to the club house until after dark and it was empty so we just went to a friends house for a couple cocktails. I have been playing many years and have been close several times but it is nice to finally get one. It must be the new Lynx Parralax clubs that I bought this year. I'll have to send a thank-you to Freddie. Michael Smith PS When I got to the ninth green I went to grap my putter and the head had fallen off and was gone. I guess it figured it was not needed anymore. (the putter was past due to be replaced, IT missed several putts the last few rounds)
