461.2 | Mean 18. If I could only hit'em like that in real life. | WORDS::NISKALA | Pats kicking: Temple of Gloom! | Thu Dec 01 1988 10:47 | 23 |
| Nice shooting. There is something in the games notefile about
mean_18, but I'm glad it got posted in here. One of the guys in
my group has about 12 courses on his Vaxmate and lets us use his
terminal during lunch. We mainly play the beginner/reg game, but
on occasion have played expert/pro tees game. One guy in our area
shot a 61 at Pebble. My personal best is 60 at Inverness. 27-33=60.
Got a couple of aces this week. One at Inverness #12, and at
Turnberry #4 and they're my only ones.
The courses we have available are: Pebble Beach, Augusta,
Firestone, Harbourtown, Inverness, Turnberry, St. Andrews, Bush
Hill, and a few that people have designed: Amherst CC, Alling CC
(a CT. course), Swamp, and Hell Acres. We recently received a couple
more on a disk that have yet to be added.
Hell Acres is one mean course, it's not a regulation course by
any means!!! The 18th is 760 yds long, par 5 and takes 3 exact
shots to small landing areas. If you miss those areas, you're either
OB, in the drink, or at the beach. If lucky enough to hit three
perfect shots, then you're left with 180 yards to the green. So
getting a par on that hole is a virtual eagle. My personal best is 84 (+12),
but one other guy has shot 79 which is the course record. Yesterday
@ HA on #18, my opponent shot a 12. I shot a 13!
Great game, maybe someday I'll learn how to use the architect
program.

| My brother had a 57 at Augusta and a 59 at St. Andrews from the
blue tees playing at the expert level, don't ask me how. I think
he plays 3-4 times a week.

My best has been a 69 at Augusta, expert/pro.
One thing that has helped me in that game, especially off the tee,
is don't try to hit the ball straight, try to hit with a slight
draw or fade, this seemed to increase the amount of fairways and
greens hit.

| re.6
Nope, not the same as note 25. 25 is a VMS game using regis
graphic terminals, VT240, VT241, etc.
Mean 18 is MS-DOS for Vaxmates, I*M PC's, Compaq 386's etc.
We're talking apples/oranges.

461.8 | I'll give it a try | MPGS::FIELDSC | Time is something to use - not kill | Fri Dec 02 1988 08:13 | 1 |

| Here are some tips....
Putting 8 feet per (going into the red maybe 20 feet)
Pitching 10 yards per
9 in sand 10 yards per ( just before red, for max distance)
? in mud drop 2-3 clubs ( just before red, for max distance)
Going into the red on your backswing accentuates the hooking
and slicing, as does being in sand , rough, or even light rough.
So forinstance a really OUT of control shot, would be to take
backswing into the red, (or the dark area at the top of the
backswing scale) and hit a ball out of the light rough... in
this scenario, even putting a little draw on the ball will create
a massive hook.
My friend and I have played everyday at lunch for over a year...
THe game is on diskette, you must have an IBM compatable system,
and color is much better for scenery (foliage looks great).
Send mail if you need info...

461.10 | Is MEAN-18 Public Domain? | JAWS::DIAZ | La Ultima y Nos Vamos | Fri Dec 02 1988 11:36 | 4 |
| Is MEAN-18 public domain software or not?
If not, I recommend we make that clear before somebody asks to get a
copy.
|
461.11 | 58 at Harbour Town, Pro tees | CHET::BEAUCHESNE | | Fri Dec 02 1988 12:57 | 9 |
| MEAN-18 is NOT Public Domain. It is copyrighted by Accolade and
is available through Austads, software dealers, and some local
department stores. Additional set of three courses are also available
on separate disks.
Architected courses should be copyable, but without including the
executable program.

461.12 | Mean 18 Scores and Tips | CSC32::M_BLESSING | | Wed Dec 07 1988 12:04 | 31 |
| I play Mean-18 on an Amiga.
My best scores are: ( all in expert mode from the pro tees)
Pebble Beach 67
Augusta 67
BushHill 71
St. Andrews 68
Calcutta 68
Harbour Town 66
Turnberry 68
Inverness 66
Golf In Hell 84
The "Golf In Hell" I have must be different than the "Hell Acres"
someone mentioned earlier; the 18th hole they described is different
than what I have. The 84 I had on "Golf In Hell" is much better
than a 66 at Harbour Town or Inverness.
Tips:
o When using the driver off the tee, take as full a backswing
as possible. I just let the guage hit the top of the scale;
I don't even make the click to start the downswing.
o Never try to hit the ball straight (except putts). It is much
easier to put the ball where you want with a little draw or
fade. This is especially true with sand shots and pitches.
I will hook or slice these quite a bit. I will usually slice
them if I am within 20 yards and hook if longer than 20 yards.
I can almost always get my pitches and sand shots within 2-3
feet and hole one fairly often.

461.13 | we even have our own M.18 Vocabulary! | STOWMA::LANGE | It's-Just-A-MAD_HOUSE_ANYWAY! | Fri Dec 09 1988 08:55 | 14 |
| I have created a number of courses using archetecture on M.18
My next step is to collect score cards from different courses that have
the course layout on the back.
I currently have Tarpon Springs from Florida, and both the north,and
south courses of Stow Acres in Mass.
Everyday at lunch,four of us get together on two Vaxmates and split
into two teams. No two players of the same team are on the same
Vaxmate. We do a round of the course of our choice,and tally scores at
the end.
Q: Does a "Scramble" or best ball mode exist on these things?

461.14 | Try this chipping method | TRCO01::ROSS | | Thu Dec 15 1988 12:41 | 30 |
| My father-in-law, brother-in-law and myself have all broken 60 on
Pebble Beach, St.Andrews, Bushhill and Augusta from the Pro tees
in expert mode.
I have not yet heard from anyone in this note on how to sink Pitching
Wedge shots from 50 yards in. Here's the secret guys. (some that
have not yet perfected this method, consider this cheating)
When you are within 50 yards, try this. The example I will give
is from 45 yards exactly. Select Pitching Wedge.
Use the arrow key to move the flag over so that the flag is just
at the right hand edge of the screen. Obviously, we are about to
slice the ball.
Stop your backswing at exactly 4.5 on the Richter scale. DO NOT
TOUCH THE SPACEBAR ON THE WAY DOWN.
This causes the ball to slice as much as possible.
Experimentation is the key to success.
I can 'drain' 4 out of 5 chips from within 50 yards using this method.
For a 50 yard chip you will have to use the arrow key until the
flag is two space bar clicks off the right hand edge of the screen.
As the distance to the flag decreases, so does the amount of distance
required to move the flag to the right of centre.
Divide the number of yards by 10 and this is how far to stop your
backswing on the Richter Scale. (ie 45 yards / 10 = 4.5)
When we play, we rarely putt and if so, the putts are never more
than 5 feet.
Have fun.

461.15 | Cheaters golf. | DSTEG2::SOUZA | Personal Name Provide Upon Request | Fri Oct 20 1989 14:00 | 16 |

Warning Spoiler to follow. (Actually a way to cheat)
My Roomate has the lowest score I have every seen for the game.
A 54 on Augusta, However he did do it by cheating. What he did
was start the game as normal and play the first whole until he
either made or missed the birdie putt. If he made the birdie he
would go onto the next whole. If he missed the putt or chip,
he would save the game before finishing the whole. When you restore
a game, it starts you on the tee of the whole that he just missed
the birdie on. He repeated this process until he had a birdie on
every hole.

461.16 | | WORDS::NISKALA | Waiting for 11/4. NU over CU! | Fri Oct 20 1989 15:26 | 6 |
| Yeah, I've done that before. Playing for real, without doing
as mentioned, my best has been 57. 2 times at Harbourtown, it's
short so you mostly can hit a wedge to the green on your 2nd shot
and the greens are small so you're almost always within birdie
range.
Try Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 game, it's much better!

461.17 | Mean on the Mac | NRADM::MCKINNON | grab a bag of bats, killer | Tue Mar 13 1990 08:01 | 17 |
| I play Mean.18 on a Mac Plus (unfortunately in B&W). I have Pebble,
Augusta. St. Andrews, and Bush Hill on my original disk, and sent away
for a back-up disk on which I re-created Arrowhead and Plum Creek (in
Colorado), Kapalua Bay (Maui) and Sky Meadow (Nashua, NH). I don't
know my best scores per course but I don't think I've been under par
yet. Close, like 1 over, but never under. I have scored a couple of
eagles though, and hit the pin off the tee on a couple of par threes.
Question: How do you open the Halls of Fame? I put every score in the
Hall for each course, but then don't know how to open the Hall to see
the scores I have in there. I get a message that says something to the
effect 'the application is busy(?) or missing.'
Would like to purchase Jack's Greatest courses. Is it available for
the Mac?
