457.0. "Unforgettable Characters" by MTWAIN::F_MCGOWAN (Ci stiamo gia divertendo?) Tue Nov 29 1988 06:56

I thought it might be fun to trade anecdotes concerning notable
characters we'd met on golf courses: funny, weird, amusing, or
just people who'd impressed us for one reason or another. I will
never forget "Scott," who showed up on the first tee at Dobson
Ranch Golf Course in Mesa, AZ one day last January dressed as though
he were going skiing - knit hat pulled down over his ears, heavy
down vest, winter coat and sneakers (!). As I recall, the temperature
was in the mid to upper 50's, which to a New Englander felt balmy,
but to a native Arizonan must have been downright frigid. Anyway,
when young mister Scott stepped up to hit his first shot, we new
we were in for a long day. He stood to the ball with feet close
together, and then strode as he swung, like a batter stepping into
a fast ball After a couple of holes, it became all too obvious he'd
never played the game before and hadn't a clue about club selection,
swing mechanics or (worst of all) proper euette, such as stepping
on your putting line, which he continued doing after it was gently
pointed out to him (he simply didn't understand what we were talking
about). At one point, he couldn' decide what club to hit, so he
asked me for some advice. "If a club has a higher number, does that
mean it hits the ball farther?" Then I understood why he continued
to hi9-irons from 200 yards out!

Anyway, he's just one of the folks who've impressed me on golf courses,
    for one reason or another...

I just want you all to know: the misspellings in the base note were
caused by line noise (logged in from home this morning). I really
do know how to spell "knew" and "etiquette"!

Mr Luscious Lou Carbello has been playing golf for about 6 years.
Lou is known for bad golf, weak swings, and a massive club collection.
When I was looking for irons this summer I used many of his sets.
He bought a total of 10 sets of irons and 3 sets of woods this season
alone! He uses each for about 3 rounds and sells them at a great
loss. This years club list is an impressive read:

    	IRONS WOODS
       	Spaulding Cannon Ping 1,4,5
Wilson Gear Effects Ram Lazer 1,3,5
Ping Eye 2 Set of custom Persimmons 1,3,5,7
    	Mizuno Wings
    	Nomad Graphite Shaft
    	Hogan Radials
    	Dunlop Red Max Berillium
    		(mine now)
    	Powerbuilt Berillium
	Titleist Graphite Shaft
    	Tiger Sharks

We call Lou the CRAZY EDDIE of golf clubs!!!

Rick, get this guy a modem and plug him into our "Buying and Selling"
notes file. He could be an asset to the group. 8^) 8^)
