448.0. "Dead Solid Perfect, The Movie" by ENGINE::WARFIELD (Gone Golfing) Wed Nov 16 1988 19:08

	The movie "Dead Solid Perfect" is supposed to be on HBO sometime
	early in December (not sure of the dates, I left my Golf Digest at
	home). For us underpriviledged golfers is anyone out there planing
	on taping it? I would love to borrow it.

	Thanks,
	Larry

    Is it an HBO production? If not, it may be available for rent.
    If it is, it might not be available for a few months?.

  It will be premiering on Sunday, December 18th. I'd tape it but I'm
  part of the 1% of the population that doesn't own a VCR.

    It figures, I dumped HBO last summer 'cause they weren't putting
    anything good on.

    I'll see if any of my relatives or friends still subscribe. Maybe
    I can get them to tape it. I'll you know.

    I've been seeing the previews on HBO for the last few weeks, looks
    like it will be a real good movie. You can bet I'll have the VCR
    loaded and ready to go when it airs. Anyone wishing to borrow or
    make copies is more than welcome to it. I can be reached at DTN
    226-7174 or DELNI::M_CARBONE.

    	Till them we'll all jut have to wait!!!

448.7Dead Solid Perfect? Hmmmm.DINSCO::BURKEJeff BurkeTue Dec 20 1988 17:5724
1/2 *  --  DEAD SOLID PERFECT

I found Dead Solid Perfect to be a major disappointment. I can understand
why Ben Crenshaw and other well-known pros did not participate [after
having reviewed the script]. The movie lacked humor and a plot, a "Deadly"
combination. A summary of DSP is highlighted below:

   	-- pro sandbags amateur;
        -- same amateur funds pro on tour;
	-- pro's wife leaves him;
        -- pro finds a girlfriend [a young blonde];
        -- his game improves [of course];
        -- girlfried leaves him for another pro [a friend];
        -- pro wins first tournament -- the U.S. Open [right]; and
        -- [you guessed it] pro wins back wife.

In my mind, Dan Jenkins clearly oversold DSP in Golf Digest. His article
took a few shots at pros [such as Crenshaw] and the PGA for not cooperating
with the production effort. I guess the only redeeming aspect of the movie
was the golf, which was fairly realistic in terms of the actors' swings and
putting techniques.

      I would have to strongly agree with Jeff on his critique of the
    movie. I didnt even make it to the part where he won the US Open,
    actually I was never a "fan" of his. This looked like "1st and Ten:
    the Pro's a Bum".

448.9The book wasn't all that hot, eitherMTWAIN::F_MCGOWANCi stiamo gia divertendo?Thu Dec 22 1988 14:5010
    Well, when I found out this was going to be on HBO, having only
    a week or so earlier canceled my HBO service, I was pretty teed
    off (pun intended). Went to the local library and checked out the
    book, which I thought was okay in general, and pretty hilarious
    every once in a while. Decided that a movie based on the book probably
    wasn't anything that would be all that great, and decided not to
    renew HBO. The last two replies confirm my judgement. Thanks for
    making me feel better about dumping HBO!
