| I have 1950 issue Tourney irons and 1955 Persimmon woods and a mixed
bag of wedges that I use. Why? With me it is between the ears. (The
toughest six inches on the course.) I have put my efforts into the
swing and have tried to adhere to Lee Trevino's statement that "The
more you practice, the luckier you get". Richard

| I have a set of Mizuno Altrons, 3-PW irons, and 3-5 laminated woods.
I also have the driver but was slicing too much, so I bought a Yamaha
x-214 with boron stiff shaft and carbon particle head. I am more
consistent now and gained some yardage.
I was having before this season a lot of trouble with my long irons,
so used to hit as much fairway woods as possible, reason why I got a
Ginty (about seven wood) as a present and chose as prize from the
league banquet a 9 wood. I took some lesson at the beginning of this
season and went a lot to the range and now I feel more confortable
with my irons, so those two woods are not anymore in my bag.
I don't have a sand wedge since I tend to hit the ball behind thus
high, I am also leftie and I want an Altron wedge, so I have trouble
finding a wedge, but probably order one anyway from the Leftie
Catalog.

| The more I play, the less I use my woods. When I first started
playing the 5 wood was my best club. Now It stays in the bag unless
I need to get the ball up fast from 180+. I use the basic 3-PW
iron set w/ 1-3-5 metal woods.(read 9.5,14,21 degree loft). The
better I get the more I want a 2 iron because controlling irons
is getting easier all the time. The only other clubs I need are
a SW to match my set (I am using a Tiger Shark 3 way pancake flipper
for now) and a chain saw for those jailed shots.

| Until two weeks ago I was playing with Wilson 1200 GE's ... 1, 3,
and 5 metal woods and 2-Sw irons ... long time before I got used
to the offset of these clubs ... when I finally placed the ball
in the middle of my stance for all clubs, I started to score
consistently well ... breaking 100 consistently ... I have upgraded
to Slazenger clubs ... 1, 3, & 5 persimmon woods and 2-Sw irons
which do not have the offset ... and again doing well with them
... also gave up on my slotline putter and switched to the Zebra
putter put out by Ram ... I highly recommend it ... great feel!
I personally like having the 2 iron in the bag so that if the woods
go awry, you can switch to the 2 iron without sacrificing much distance
... lot better to be in the fairway for your second shot rather
than the woods!

| I use a Prima wood driver, Wilson 1200GE metal 3- and 5- woods,
and a ratty generic metal 7-wood that I picked up for a song
somewhere (maybe Nevada Bob's). I use the metal stuff for fairway
woods, since they tend to be weighted a bit more heavily on the
bottom and are better suited (for me) for hitting a ball that
isn't teed up. For irons, I've got Prima 2-PW, and a Spaulding
Executive SW. And a beat-up old putter that works no worse than
any of the new ones I try every year.
Which, if you've been counting, is 15 clubs, which is what I'll
carry if I'm playing strictly for fun. Otherwise, if I'm hitting
the ball poorly, the 2-iron stays in the trunk and I'll carry the
7-wood for long shots from the rough and some other trouble shots
(or even a fairway wood). The 7 looks funny, but it's a lot
easier to swing than a 3- or 5- (because of the shorter shaft),
and the ball carries 190 or so yards. If I'm playing ok, the 7
stays put away in favor of the deuce.

439.8 | Got any "driver" advice? | MTWAIN::F_MCGOWAN | Ci stiamo gia divertendo? | Thu Nov 17 1988 06:40 | 10 |
| FWIW: Pinnacle 1-3-5 woods, MacGregor CG1800 2-SW, mongrel putter
(tried a Bullseye flange, do better with the "mutt"). Love the
3 & 5 woods, hate the driver...am looking at a Hogan metal driver
that has a nice (i.e. "non-slicing") feel to it, but it costs almost
as much as all three Pinnacle woods did, and I don't do all that
badly off the tee with the 3. Still, there's enough "machismo" in
me to make me want to pull out the howitzer when I tee it up, so
if anyone has any suggestions about drivers, I'm all ears (or eyes)!

| For about 75 bucks you can get a taylor made metal driver in about
any loft you want. Can't beat 'em for quality and durability.
The heads appear smaller than persimmon drivers and your subconcious
may think it's a three wood! I like the 9 1/2 degree model but
try a 7 1/2 also for fun.
Crush away....
