420.0. "Fairytales DO come true!" by GAOV06::POMPHRETT () Mon Oct 17 1988 10:08
It started in the bible, but it continued in St. Andrews, THE home of golf,
this past week!
David, in the form of Ireland, beat not 1, nor even 2, but 3 Goliaths, to win
the Dunhill World Team Matchplay competition.
In the first round of the final tournament, Ireland, represented by Eamon Darcy,
Des Smith and Ronan Rafferty beat a Canadian team by two matches to one.
Then came Goliath no. 1 - USA, represented by Curtis Strange, Mark McCumber and
Chip Beck. Ireland won by two matches to nil, with one halved. This result alone
was cause for celebration, especially when one considers that Ireland has a mere
8 golfers playing on the European Circuit. This was even better than the Ryder
Cup!
Goliath no. 2 then appeared, this time disguised as England, led by Nick Faldo.
Again, in a match interrupted by fog on Saturday and completed on Sunday
morning, Ireland triumphed by 2 matches to 1 - Faldo's colours being lowered
for the first time in the 4 year history of this event. By the way, England was
the defending champion.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon, came Goliath no. 3, Australia, led by Greg Norman,
with extremely able troops in David Graham and Rodger Davis. And again, in one
of the most thrilling finishes ever seen at this hallowed ground, Ireland
triumphed by 2 matches to 1. Smith beat Davis by 2 shots, having been 2 down
with 3 holes left - birdie par birdie unnerved poor Rodger. Then Rafferty
beat Graham by 5 shots, and the celebrations began. Darcy almost danced up the
18th, even though he was being trounced by Norman, who came within 1 shot of
Strange's course record of 10 under.
For the benefit of the non-Irish, Spain beat England 2-1 in the third place
playoff.
Once more it is great to be Irish. And you don't have to be a big guy to win!

| Combined with Notre Dame's narrow win over Miami U's football team
Saturday, I'd have to agree it's great to be (of) Irish (extraction)!

Truely exellent!!!!
This episode reflects what a great game golf really
is. Even the also rans can be champions on any given day. Good
work Ireland.
I taped the final but am yet to watch it. Its has got
to be one of my dreams to play St. Andrews, just an unbelievable
course.
Also its great to see the Great White Shark tearing
the golf course apart he may have finally got his putting going
this year.

420.3 | Loved St. Andrews | ODIXIE::WESTCL | Gator Golfer | Thu Oct 20 1988 18:22 | 10 |
| Thanks for the update on the matches. Unfortunately, for us who
live in the Southern U.S., football rules the roost in the fall
and winter. I didn't know how the matches turned out!!
Congratulations to the Irish. I was in Scotland a few weeks ago
and played St. Andrews. TV doesn't do the course, or the town,
justice.
I was amazed at how the wind affects all parts of the game over
there, including putting. Its a much different game than what we
play down here. Loved it.
