I'm very new to the game of golf but got the bug real fast. It's a LOT more challenging then it looks and a lot of fun. I've gone out about 8 times this in the past 10 weeks (first year playing) and have improved a lot. I am at the point that I can get on the green in 1 or 2 shots a lot of the time (150 - 300 yards). Much better than the 5 shots it took me when I started. Anyway, is there any real basic pointers that you can give me or is there a special note in this file for that? I know I should probably get a lesson or two but I'm out there just for fun and any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know what womens golf clubs that you think are best in the $150 - $300. range (would like to find a nice set on sale for about $150). Just starting out so I don't want to go for the top of the line yet. Just a nice set for a starter like me, maybe with a nice big sweet spot (yes, I'm catching on to a little bit of the lingo). Thanks, Pam

Oh yea, forgot to mention that my drive is pretty good, need a lot of work on chips and putting. I have a habit of trying to chip up onto the green and hit it just hard enough to get it over the other side instead of by the flag where it belongs. Pam

I would like to recommend lessons I think for a beginner they start to build good habits and a better understanding of what causes good & bad shots. Don't get frustrated about the problems you have chipping around the green. The short game as it is called is probably one of the most difficult to master. This is mainly due to the fact that you have to take less than a complete swing. In addition there are some many different sorts of shots that you can play. It takes a long time to determine which shot is right for each situation and learn to execute it properly. (Even after you have figured that out you will still hit a few over the green instead of close to the flag!) I started playing with a couple of other friends my age. A couple of rules that we adopted will help. 1) No matter how badly you are playing on a hole you couldn't take more than a 10. (Keeps the total score looking reasonable). 2) Miss em fast! (That is if for some strange reason you are playing a hole and no matter how you swing at the ball you can only seem to advance it 10-20 yards, don't stand over the next shot and take a long time setting up & trying to figure out what you are doing wrong (because you will still only advance the ball 10 yds.)). Just relax and make a nice smooth swing at the ball. It will probably go better that way. 3) Finally since you are learning you will probably be playing a slower. If you are delaying the group behind you let them play through. It will make them happy because they won't be waiting around. You will be more relaxed because you won't feel pressured by the group behind you. It's a great game. Have fun. Larry

Pam, There are alot of great "CLONES" for clubs just as we are seeing in the PC space. This approach allows you to pick up very good starting clubs at bargin prices. The Austin,Texas or Louisville clone makers are listed in NOTE 69, so get the phone numbers to order there material. You will be most happy! Have fun starting what is a life-long game. My youngest daughter is into nearly 20 years of golf and my 12 year-old Grandson started this Summer, so I know what fun this golf can lead to. Tom |
