389.0. "Point Quota...?" by MSEE::KELLEY (on_in_regulation, GRAPHITE) Wed Sep 14 1988 13:21

Is anybody familiar with two man point quota tournaments?
If so what amount of points usually wins? I will be playing
in my first point quota event this weekend and it is a
two man team event. It seems like an interesting format and
looking forward to it, but don't know what to expect. It
is also a calcutta, so it would be nice to know what to expect!

For those people that are not familiar with the point quota
format, it works something like this...

    		Eagle	8 points
    		Bird	4 "
    		Par	2 "
    		Bogie	1 "
    		Double	0 "
    		Triple+ -1 "

Your quota is 36 (for 18 holes) minus your handicap. For
example a 12 handicap would have a quota of 24. If he gets
24 points he has reached his quota and any points above that
    	are in the plus column...

I think that is the basics of it...

    	Thanks for any input

I have played in several of these types of tournaments. Typically
if you and your partner shoot your handicaps, you should be in the
money. However sandbaggers have the same effect in these matches
as in stroke or match play. I have seen +8 to +12 win these 2 day
tourneys, as both players have an impact on the team score. The
key here is to avoid double bogeys, and at all costs triples.

                                               Have fun,

we play this each weekend at the club I'm a member at and .1 sums
up best the way to stay in contention....however....on any given
week whoever happens to be hot seems to pull their partner up and
they win..win is anywhere from +6 to +18..by all means just make
sure you get at least a point on a hole (boggie) and take any birds
that happen to come along and you should stand well...

oh and by the way gene....make sure the handicaps are adjusted for
par on the course...a year ago we used our own handicap system based
on par for the course, this year we switched to GHIN system which
is based on "course rating and home course handicap" well our home
course is rated lower than the par on the course(par=70,rating=65)
and the point system is based on 36 points for par of 70....

Well, it was a great tourney. Nice pot, $10,400. The
bad part was that we finished just out of the money
in 6th place at +6. My partner Peter Stopera had a GREAT
tourney, finishing at +8 on his ball. I had a few
problems out there and finished at -2 on my ball. The
    	winning scores were as follows...

+15 even for the first day... +15 for the second...!!!!
+12 don't know what the break down was...
    		+9 +8 and +1...
    		+8 +7 and +1...
+7 don't know the break down on this one either...

We did manage to finish 4th in our flight and got some money
    	for the pro shop...

It was a good format and I can't wait to get to play in another
    	one...
