374.1 | PV not up to par | ENGINE::WARFIELD | Gone Golfing | Wed Aug 24 1988 17:26 | 23 |
| > I heard yesterday that Pleasent Valley is going to be adding 9

I had read in the Globe several months ago that PV was going to build
some condos on what is the old fairway for the 4th hole (#2 during the
tournament.) The article said nothing about another 9.
Since we are on the topic of Pleasant Valley, I am suprised that no one
from the Maynard Golf League has written any comments here. We had our
outing there Monday. The course is in bad shape for one that is supposed
to be hosting the pros in 3 weeks. We had to play to 5 temporary greens!
Several of the greens and many of the fairways had brown patches of dead
grass. I got there late and had to leave early so I didn't get to find out
what the cause was. I would guess some sort of fungus. I was just amazed
at the fact that the whole course was in such lousy shape.
Does anyone have any better information on the cause? How is this going to
impact the tournament? (I generally go see a round, but in this condition
I'm pretty sure I'll pass.)

374.2 | "COURSE-SIDE HOMES ARE FINE" | OURVAX::GLASS | | Wed Aug 24 1988 17:30 | 11 |
| Hi,
PV did submit their proposal to the Sutton town and are after nine(9)
new holes and homes on 240 acres. How else can they pay for maintenance
of the course and assure a good ROI for that land?
In addition, they have had to close the course and re-sod one(1)
green as well as watch carefully several other greens. The 12th.
PGA tournament is fast approaching and I am glad that I am neither
greens keeper or owner!
See note 159.10 and you will see why I support PV's action.

| Sounds to me like the hazy hot and humid weather may have either
burnt PV or brought in pythium (a cottony fungus that kills grass
pretty bad).
I can't believe that they have had that kind of trouble. They must
have their own private irrigation system (town water for a golf
course of that nature would be silly). Therefore, the greenskeeper
must have been on something this summer and not sprayed any
preventative fungicide. They saying an ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure is really true for turfgrass.
The grass will probably come back this fall but that does not help
the Bank of Boston Classic.
BTW, re-sodding a green is serious! Pythium can destroy a green
over night and I have seen it done. One year we fought pythium for
a while when I had a new boss but he smartened up right away. The
next year, we were spraying a smaller does every week to prevent
the disease and never saw it.

374.4 | condos and fungus | FILM::PIEL | | Thu Aug 25 1988 10:10 | 35 |
| I agree that PV was in terrible shape. Since I live in Sutton, I
knew what the conditions would be when we got there.
The pythium attack happened very fast. I take a few lessons from
one of the pro's there each year so I was able to note the course
conditions. About a week before the 2 days of heavy rain, PV was
in great shape. Two weeks later, well, disaster. According to my
instructor, they lost a green per day and spraying didn't help.
The 16th green had to be completely resoded at a cost of 14,0000.
The next stop on the tour after Bank of Boston, has lost 12 greens
to the same fungus. I expect many complaints from the pros.
PV does have a private irrigation system, but it was the humidity
that got the course, not lack of water.
The condo plan is for real and the additional 9 holes is based
upon PV buying some additional land from a developer. As a resident
of the town, I am sadden that the condo plan is going through because
the town already as 2 under construction and 2 additional all set
to go. We are being overrun by developers and town services already
are strained, but that's another topic. I am also sorry to see condos
along some of the fairways (17 and 4 at least). This will detract
from the beauty of the course.
Anyway, even though the conditions were not good, I still enjoyed
the opportunity to play PV. I usually attend the tournaments that
are held there and it was fun to compare the lengths of my drives
to where the pros normally hit theirs given the fact that they set
the tees all the way back for tournament play. Yes, they do hit
the ball along way !!!
As a side comment for those who played there Monday, do you remember
#15 ?? Well, 2 years ago I saw Davis Love III land on the green
with his tee shot !!!!! Talk about power.

| My next door neighbor is a member out at PV and he told me the other
day there is talk of moving the tournament to Worcester C.C. He
also said that is was Pythium that killed those greens, but as Mike
said, thats what the greenskeeper gets paid for. They also moved
the qualifying site for the tournament from PV to Mount Pleasant
up in West Boylston because of the conditions. Stay tuned.

| Unless conditions improve, the move would be a smart one. Can't
help but wonder what they would do about parking facilities if the
Bank of Boston is played at Worcester C.C.

As I started to read your paragraph I thought you were just condo bashing.
If done well condos can fit in with a golf course without an adverse impact.
However I feel that if they put condo's along the 17th hole at PV it would
be a travesty. That has got to be one of the prettiest holes! I just can't
imagine where they would put a building without wrecking the hole.

374.8 | I think they are on the 17th | FILM::PIEL | | Fri Aug 26 1988 10:08 | 14 |
| Larry,
The plan that I heard of said that condos would be on
the 17th. It could be that they maybe set far back on the hill to
the left side of the fairway. If I recall correctly the parking
facilities that are used during the tournament, there is a large
field near the left side of the 17th fairway as well as in back
of the 17th green. It all depends where they are located. It seems
to me that the plan I read about used the phrase "overlooking the
17th hole". I am not 100% sure however.
I do agree that it would be a shame to ruin a very pretty hole.

374.9 | Condos on 17 | FILTER::PIEL | | Tue Sep 20 1988 14:08 | 15 |
| While at the Bank of Boston this weekend, there was a tent set
up that had a scaled down version of the proposal for the 9 additional
holes and the location of the houses/condos. I didn't really have
a lot of time to spend there looking at the mock-up because my son
wasn't interested. The plans are preliminary, but they do show condos
on the top the hill which would be on the left side of the fairway.
The person I spoke to said that they would visible from the fairway.
I told him that I hoped that the plans would change and that they
would be moved farther back because of the beauty of the hole.
The plans showed many holes located across the street from the
main entrance.
