371.0. "Free Lesson vs. Payed Lesson!" by FLYSQD::MONTVILLE () Mon Aug 22 1988 13:21

What a learning experience..This past Saturday I played in a Tournement
at the local club. Due to the handicaps (had to split our team)
I got moved to another team as a "D" man.

Our "A" man was the past course champion for years. I rode along
with him in the cart. Within two holes he had surveyed my position,
    swing and contact/follow-through.

He had me chance my stance by slightly dropping my left foot back
(about 1")........What a difference in the woods and long irons.

I dropped (at least) one stroke off the long holes by this re-position.

He said (I am right handed) "your right leg in not staying tight
on your swing, keep it planted, rotate the the left knee (showed
me a couple of times) and the rest will follow". Boy was he right.

Last night I tool my 10 year old son who is starting to get interested
in golf to the local high school fields. I must have practiced
by hitting about 100+ shots, it took a little while to get comfortable
    but it's paying off now.

Point is , I have payed for lessons before and they have never told
me this (3 lessons). I won't mention the name of the instructor
here but why did'nt he point this out to me, He did help with grip
and swing but not stance. Are alot of these instructors out there
to collect their money and hope you will come back again because
    ??????? is'nt working.

Sounds like he really helped you!! To offer an answer to your question
about teaching pro's- There are all sorts of pro's out there, some
who will take your buck any way they can, and others who really
take an interest in you. Only you can determine what type you get,
unless you get references. However, I suggest that you, as a "D"
player, will have a number of areas for improvement. One thing
most good pro's do is to take things one at a time in teaching their
subjects. You mention three lessons - over what time frame? How
long were the lessons, and, were they part of a planned multi-lesson
program? Good luck. Get a good pro and stick with him for the
    best long range results.

Also, maybe the pro did see the same thing that was pointed out
to you by your friend. When you are giving someone golf lessons,
the last thing you want to do is flood them with information. It
is possible that the pro was picking your weakest point, and then
working from there. You can only correct 1 thing at a time in your
    swing!

I have to agree with the other 2 replies. It's possible you
got a bonehead pro but then again what did this alledged bonehead
teach you? The 2 problems that this "A" player helped you with
are very common problems (square stance & swaying) with new players.
When I first got into swing mechanics, I was taught that the MOST
IMPORTANT thing to get a new player to do was to hit the ball.
"Even if you have to tee it up 6 inches. If they can't make contact
they'll loose interest." There are other aspects to the swing like
balance, posture........ Lord the list goes on. Don't give up
on teaching pros, their living depends upon people playing the game.
If you don't make progress (ie they aren't helping your game) then
you'll loose interest, and they loose too.
