There seems to be a difference between the "official" definition
and common usage.
The official definition of best-ball competition is where one
player competes against a team of either two or three players, and
the best score of the two- or three-player team on each hole is
used.
A common usage of best-ball, at least in some of the groups I hang
out with, is a match consisting of two-player teams, and the
better score on each hole is used for the team's score. The
"official" name for this type of competition seems to be
"four-ball".

Great P.S. Mr. Topaz!
Best ball can be played a. best ball in partners e.g. TWO ball
b. best ball 3 man team e.g. Three ball
c. best ball 4 man team e.g. Four ball
d. All of the above
The correct answer is d. Actually the number of players is incidental
as its the only the best ball counts.

We have started some thing different (for us at least) last year.
We play a lot of Cap-Am style tournaments and we found that using
the best ball out of a three-some or four-some handicaps were going
up and up. The reason was if one or two on the team were in the
hole (that is for best ball score), the others "were playing for
handicap". So we started combined best two ball tournaments, where
the two best balls were counted for the team. It kept, for the
most part, people grinding it out. The length of time for a round
didn't suffer either. Handicaps stopped soaring. Now if we can
stop the practice of "aww, gimme a six" casual rounds we might see
these 15 and 16 handicappers come down where they belong.

| Playing for handicap... Whatever turns people on , I guess.
We sometimes play a best ball match where you get two (2) points
a hole. One point for best ball, (best score on hole), and one point
for combined score. We don't do it for handicap purposes, but rather
to keep everyone in a hole. This way, if you partner is in for a
bird, you remain in the hole mentally, because combined also means
one point.

RE: .7
Mr. Gordon,
I think the point here is that if I had the book I wouldn't need
to ask the question. If you have the book then please share the
answers with the rest of us, this is the point of having a notes
conference...
Thanks
