245.1 | par three tournament winner? | MSEE::POULSEN | | Thu Apr 07 1988 14:31 | 12 |
| The Augusta National Golf Club has (besides its famous 18 holes)
a nine hole par three course. Every year at the Masters there is
a tournament on the par three course on Wednesday. Nobody has ever
won the par three tournament on Wednesday and gone on to win the
Masters. Thats why I was curious about who won yesterday.
Any other comments about the Masters?
Again. Who won the par three tournament?

| I have a gut feeling about Greg Norman at the Master's this year.
He can't be a brides maid three times in a row. He'll be gunning
for the top spot. I'd go with him this year!

| He better start making those 3-foot putts, or he'll have the weekend
off! I won't count him out (yet) but it will take a hell of a comeback
to do it...

I just hope a European wins.
It would be nice for them to show their total domination
of world golf with the Ryder cup and the Masters.

Well as a sentimental favorite, as always, Jack will take it.
Ok, now to reality. I think this will be the year for the big names
to re-establish themselves as dominant in winning the majors. Here
is a list of names I thinks will be in the top 5, Watson, Nickalaus,
Norman, Langer and Ballesteros. And the top two were paired together
yesterday, Sundays final pair will be Watson and Norman with Norman
edging Watson by 1 shot. Normally I would take Watson in this situation
but Norman has come in second in a row, and by a fluke shot last
year (I know it was a great shot and Larry Mize played great, but
how often does someone sink a 100 foot chip on those greens?).
The winner: The Shark, look for him to make a move late today and
tomorrow.

245.15 | not a real MASTERS | USWAV3::FAGERBERG | | Mon Apr 11 1988 11:15 | 27 |

Any comments on the "MASTERS" as a tournament??
Some of my observations:
1. Run by SNOBS who I wouldn't want to be on the same course
with.
2. Where is the rough on that course?
3. Why gimmick up the course as badly as they did? So what
if someone (more that likely Greg Norman) shot in the fifties.
And they did water the h*ll out of the greens after hearing
some of the "squealling" going on.
4. Are the lunches there so good that that's all Trevino will
go there for?
5. Why was Jack Whitticker banished for 10 years?
6. Outside of Bobby Jones involvement, why is such a dinck
tournament giving as much if not more prestige than the U S Open?
And finally, I was pulling for Calcaveccia, but Lyle made up for
that bad hole with a spectacular shot out of the trap at 18, he
deserved the win.

245.16 | fast greens | MSEE::POULSEN | | Mon Apr 11 1988 16:25 | 15 |
| re.15
How do you figure they gimmicked up the course? They did make a
change on the 14th green, but other than that I don't think they
change anything else. The greens got hard and extra fast because
of the winds. Did anyone hear if they did a measurement with the
stimp (sp) meter?
There was an announcer who called the crowd "a mob". That did not
go over to big with the tournament officials. I guess it was Jack
Whitticker and that is why he is gone.

245.17 | greased lightening | USWAV3::FAGERBERG | | Mon Apr 11 1988 16:47 | 12 |
|
The biggest thing they did was literally shaving the greens, the
wind increased the speed and hardness and caused the major cpmplaints.
But the greens were so fast that holding a green (how many balls
did you see roll off the green and back 6 or 8 feet into the "rough"
or fairway?) or putting them was ridiculous. Any course played
during the tour will not have greens like that. Listening to the
comments at the club as to how the approaches were cut, lack of
rough, etc., if any course was set up like that regularly there
would be few who would enjoy playing it. The pros refer to it as
"gimmicking".

245.18 | | VINO::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi | Tue Apr 12 1988 13:22 | 18 |
| Personally, I always like to watch the Master's because of the fast
greens. Nothing beats putting on a lightening fast, smooth surface.
However, this year's Master's was spent putting on browns. Either
something happened to those nice greens or they were scalping the
you know what out of them. The 11th green was the worst out of all
the ones I saw on TV.
At the Master's the put some tough (even impossible) pin placements
during the tournament. That's when it is time for experience. Take
11 for example. It's not a hole you charge for birdie. You try for
par and take it if you can. As for 13, no one expects more than
4. If you make 5, you feel like you lost a shot.
I didn't think the greens were too hard on Sunday. They seemed to
hold good shots made from short grass.
