225.0. "Amherst weiner roast" by MYVAX::DIAMOND (Not one of the Beasty Boys) Tue Mar 15 1988 13:48

    Well since noone has reported it yet. To all golfers in the Merrimack
    the Amherst Country Club just burned down this morning. The clubhouse
    is totally gutted. Found this out from my wife.

    	Yeah, I just heard the same. Now where the hell are we going
    to be able to drink? Seriously, I hope they can get something up
    before the summer. If there are any members of ACC that follow this
    conference, keep us posted as to what will be done. The DEC - MKO/ZKO
    league was scheduled to start our season there in the end of April.
    I would presume the course would be open for play during the summer,
    but you never know depending on how all the equipment fared, ie
    mowers, carts, etc.
    	My high school class reunion was scheduled for one of the banquet
    halls in July, too. Geez.

    Last night's Ch.9 news said ALL the equipment was fried. Carst,
    Mowers, Pins, etc.

    Maybe they can get some more before the season opens.

re: .2

I don't think that's correct. I was out at ACC on Saturday. They had pins
out on the greens and they had a number of carts being stored on the tennis
courts. Does anyone know where they store the mowers?

BTW: Last night's paper stated that the damage was at least 1/2 M$ and that
the owner pledged to rebuild the 20 year old clubhouse. That would imply
that they plan to open ASAP (they certainly need the revenue).

    	I'm going to take a scoot over during lunchtime and see what
    is left of the 19th hole. I sure hope something is done to get things
    going there. My league starts at the end of April. Hope they had
    good insurance coverage.......
225.5Char-broiled buildingWORDS::NISKALAIn sheep dip...Wed Mar 16 1988 12:3413
    	What a mess. It looks like the fire started in the rear of
    the building and worked its way forward. The front is still standing
    but everything has collapsed in elsewhere. It looks like most of
    the carts were stored on the tennis courts, and I think most of
    the maintenance equipment was in the building in the back, off to
    the side. This building was okay. There were a couple of carts that
    were in the rear of the building, and they're fried. Down the tubes
    goes the 19th hole, the pro shop, and the banquet halls.

    ps	The flags are on all of the greens, some snow remains on the
    fairways, but the greens are clear.

    	Down to the cape to play this weekend. Bye
225.6All weather flags!!AKOV13::SANSINGIs it ice OUT yet?Fri Mar 18 1988 12:497
    The reason the flags are in the holes is because the groundskeepers
    never took them out for the winter!!!! Amherst has always been one
    of the worst kept courses in the state!!!
    For me it will be Green meadow #2 or Buckmeadow this season.

    I played at Amherst Saturday. They had a tent by the tennis court.
    There was a bulldozer working on the clubhouse.

    		I am planning on going there this weekend.

225.9Conditions at AmherstMSEE::POULSENWed Mar 30 1988 14:0613
    The green fees were $16.50. The weathermen had predicted sunny skys
    for last Saturday. After the tee shot on number 1 the rain coat
    and umbrellas came out. After the second hole I had the hole rain
    suit on. The other three guys didn't have rain suits and were so
    soaked that we left after nine holes.

    There was some snow in the fairway on # 4, but otherwise everything
    else was green. We used all the regular greens on the front side.
    They said they were using a tempory green on the 12th. Wish I could
    have seen it.

    What else is new for the 12th??? That green takes about 3 months
    to get in shape.

225.11I hate the 12th, my push puts me on the bankingWORDS::NISKALAGolf fever...catch it!!Thu Mar 31 1988 13:448
    	The 12th takes 3 months to become useable. It never seems to
    be in shape, there are always winter burn spots on that green. No
    wonder why it's rated the toughest hole (hdcp 2) on the back side,
    it's a 3-putt green. At least this year the course hasn't been washed
    away like last year during the April floods. Oops, it's not April
    yet.
