202.0. "Refinisher Recommendations" by USAVAX::PENDERGAST () Tue Feb 23 1988 21:51

      I need a hand in finding someone to refinish some MacGregor woods.
    I know this work is done by Nevada Bob's amongst others but these
    woods are forty years old and worth somewhere around two grand.

       For this reason I would like to find someone who takes special
    pride in working with antique clubs. I live and work in Marlborough
    but I would be willing to travel if someone came highly recommended.
    I bought new sticks this year and can't wait to turn them into antiques
    the Macgregors are being returned to my father.Thanks in advance,

    tee um high, let um fly.

202.1The Golf Works in OhioVIRGO::MURPHYI want you to kill all the gophers...Wed Feb 24 1988 12:4617
    Brian,

    I can't think of anyone locally who specializes in classic club
    work. I wouldn't be comfortable with trying just anyone with those
    clubs.

    Perhaps the best service and investment protection would come from
    contacting 'The Golf Works' in Ohio. Ralph Maltby, a foremost expert
    on all aspects of club work, runs this facility and their work would
    be guaranteed. All of their literature about club work indicates
    that they will not perform work that 'lessens' the value of a club.

    I have done work with them before and have always been satisfied
    with their products, service and attitude. My opinion is that if
    they were my clubs they would be refinished by 'The Golf Works'.

    For what it's worth....

202.3GolfWorks Phone NumberVIRGO::MURPHYI want you to kill all the gophers...Thu Feb 25 1988 11:0013
    Sorry I didn't have the info before but I couldn't remember the
    details.

    Please inquire about the refinishing at The GolfWorks by phoning
    toll free at 1-800-848-8358. They also have another number for
    'Technical Information'. It is 1-614-323-4193.

    One of the things that I couldn't remember was the name of one of
    their staff - Tom Wishon - who authored "The Golf Club Identification
    and Price Guide". His book is used as the industry source and reference
    on clubs (classic or not). I thumbed through this book last night
    but it only goes back to 1950 and wouldn't contain your older
    MacGregors.
202.4"LOCAL BOY MAY BE BETTER"OURVAX::GLASSSun Feb 28 1988 19:5721
    There is a very fine golf club refinisher in Southboro who does
    work for several clubs as well as collectors like myself.He uses
    a set of Ben Hogan MacGregor's he refinished and they are a fine
    example of his normal work(Yes,Ben signed MacGregors until he formed
    his own company,so these woods are MOST VALUABLE!).

    His name is Eddie Merrins(?) and his street runs parallel to the
    St.Marks golf courses EAST side.He lives in a white cape that just
    had a breezway added and skylights in the roof.Also,Neveda Bob's
    should give you his phone number.He does all of the work for Kurt
    S. at framingham as well!

    GOLFWORKS is also very good depending on the craftsman that receives
    the work.They are mostly old BURKE workers left over from one of
    the countries finer club makers.They suffer only from the fact that
    the service can be very slow and clubs have been known to be lost
    in mail/planes/etc.

    Good luck.
    Tom
