180.0. "Golfing in Southern CA?" by CURIE::RESKER () Thu Dec 31 1987 11:33

In a vein similar to 178, I'm going to San Diego and LA for a week
in January. I WILL be doing some golfing. Two questions:

What are some nice courses in the SD and LA areas that are open
to the public and are not very expensive (over $30 greens fee?)?

Should I bring my own clubs or rent them? I heard clubs often get
stolen in air transit. What does it usually cost to rent clubs?

    thanks,

I think Torrey Pines in north San Diego is a public course. It is very popular,
however, and you should make a tee time well in advance of your visit. Have a
good round!

There are also Anaheim CC and Green River CC in the Orange
County/Anaheim area. I never played Anaheim, but the rap is that
it's built on the side of a hill, and you're always hitting up or
down hill (and you really need a cart).

I played the river course at Green River. It was nice, but the
wind came down off the canyon at the end of the day, and it was
virtually impossible to reach a par 3 in one shot. I'd play early
    if possible.

I think that Torrey Pines at La Jolla is still around $12 a round,
but you'd better arrive early and expect a rather long wait--even
    now in the off-season.

    Have fun,
    Myles

Played 2 9-hole rounds at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The course
was very pretty and in good shape. Lot's of scenic holes with the
Pacific in the background. Showed up twice at 2 in the afternoon
with a 15 minute wait the first day and a one hour wait the second
(did not call ahead). It was $12 for 9. Rented clubs (MacGregor)
    for $10.

Thanks to .1 and .2 for the pointers.

180.4UPDATE ON SO CAL GOLFSANFAN::GRANT_JOMon Aug 15 1988 17:339
I lived in Southern Cal for two years, and am very familiar with
golf in that area. Anyone interested, send me a note. The Anaheim
course in the previous note is "Anaheim Hills." It's actually very
nice, but a cart is recommended unless you have the legs of a mountain
goat. As for Green River being windy in the afternoon, well, all
Southern Cal courses are windy most afternoons. Of the two courses
at Green River, play the Orange (as opposed to the Riverside) course.
It's nice when the greens are reasonable.

Depending on how far south you are in 'Southern California', you
should check out Mission Viejo Golf Course (in Mission Viejo) and even
further south, Oceanside has nice course (the name escapes me at the
moment).

Mission Viejo Golf Course -

Very short course with most par 4s in the 295-310 yard range.
Don't let this fool you...it's tight and requires very accurate
drives. It's a beautiful little course though, well worth playing
   if you're in the area.

Beware of the bent grass greens though...there is no such thing as
breaks! Aim at the middle of the hole and RAP it!

Oceanside -

Very flat course that winds all over creation and is for the most
   part very forgiving.
