I usually play down here in Ct through Thanksgiving...
Best nine: 38 at Minnechaug CC Glastonbury Ct
Worst nine: 51 during DEC golf league at Lyman Meadows CC
Middlefield Ct a Robert Trent Jones course.
Best eighteen: 84 Manchester CC Manchester Ct
Worst eighteen: 96 Laurel View CC Hamden Ct
Best shot of the year: 5th hole Manchester CC 535 yd Par 5.... hit
the stick with my 3 wood second shot and tapped in for Eagle
three... Almost the elusive Albatross !!!!
Worst hole of the year: Minnechaug CC 17th hole par 3 125 yds
This hole has an island green from an elevated tee.. hooked
an entire sleeve of balls into the drink and made 11 during
a tournament.
Also during a wet day on DEC golf league day I hit the stick
off the tee on a 135 yd par three.... Good thing I didn't make the
ace as tradition would have me buy at the 19th hole and with my
co-workers there is the definite threat of bankruptcy.
Ban the TPB (Three Putt Bogey)

| This has not been the best of years. As a matter of fact this is
the third bad year in a row.
It did start off pretty good though. Worked on the swing early
in the spring and had an 81 (second round I think) before the short
game came back. But in early May I broke a finger building a porch
and 2 decks on the back of my house so I missed all of May and �
of June. When I came back I couldn't break 85. As a result handicap
up to 13.
Best round of the year: First round of the club championship (stroke
play tournament). 79 (with a triple bogey 7 on 11)
Worst round of the year: Final round of CC. 88
39 on the front (missed 4 putts under 6 feet, misread 3 or them)
on the back OB 12 for an 8, in the water on 13 for a great 6, 2nd
shot hit a tree on 15 to go OB for a 7 and then the wheels fell
off. Finished second by 2 shots. By far the worst!!!!!
Worst shot of the year, the tee shot on 15 from above. I knew it
wasn't going left but I aimed it right anyway and never got out
of trouble.
Best shot of the year. Had a few but 2 come to mind. After taking
the 7 on 11 (from 80 yards off the green) I hit a high fade into
the wind on 13 then a 3 iron 'right at it' and made the putt for
birdie. Hitting a fade with a 3 wood had to be the best shot all
year.
Hope for next year! Stop HOOKING the tee shot and leave the &%*&%
hammer in the basement.

| This too hasn't been one of my best years. Started great with a
trip to Florida where I shot 78 the last day.
Most of the summer I played pretty consistently. My handicap started
at 12, went to 10 and now rests at 11.
Best round of the year. Had to be in the first round of the Club
Championship at my home course. It was match play and I shot a
76 but lost to a guy who shot 69.
Worst round of the year. Any one I've played in the last month.
Seems a case of the "power fades" has hit me hard and just recently
have gotten over them.
Best shot of the year. Had to be in the Member/Guest tournament
at my brother-in laws- home course out in Michigan. We were in
the semi-finals (match play) and were 1 up with 2 holes to play.
One of our opponents hits his second shot on a par 4 to the right
of the flag about 30 feet. My brother in law hits his second off
the planet, so now I can feel the pressure. I proceed to hit a
career 6 iron about 2 feet. Our opponent drops his 30 footer for
birdie and my putt all of a sudden gets a lot longer. I make it
anyway and we go on to win the match. We lost in the finals.
Worst shot of the year. With my recent bout with "power fade" fever,
too numerous to mention.
Still a few good days left, so keep hacking.

| Okay, I'll 'fess up to my own happiest/saddest golf memories of the
soon-to-be-finished season of '87:
Best 9 - 37 (2 over)
Best 18 - ?? (could combine 37 and next day's 40); otherwise, probably
about a 91.
Best shot - hard to choose;
3-wood off fairway at Santo Domingo Club, Manzanillo, Mexico
5-iron to green on 185-yard par 3 at Unicorn, Stoneham (completely
trapped, had to reach on the fly)
40-foot "snake" putt to save par on the 13th at Millwood (Framingham)
3-iron chip shot (!) from under palm tree at Las Hadas to
within 18 inches of pin
9-iron to within 2 feet of pin (over a trap) on the 9th at
Petersham CC, after 8 miserable holes
Best course - Las Hadas, Manzanillo, Mexico
Best hole - 18th at Las Hadas (The Manta Ray); par 3, elevated tee,
carry across an ocean inlet to a narrow green 145 yards
away
Best "move" - taking a lesson and curing my "pitch-out" problem
Best partner - Slammin' Susie (my wife)
Worst 9 - 56 at Unicorn
Worst 18 - 108 at Green Meadows #2
Worst shot - hard to choose:
Flubbed chip shots
Topped 3-irons
Shanked pitching wedges
6-foot "comeback" putts
Dubbed fairway woods
Power-faded drives
Worst course - Leo J. Martin, Weston, Mass
Worst hole - 13th at Leo J. Martin
Worst "move" - waiting till September to take a lesson
Worst partner - just about anyone I got paired up with at (yup) Leo
J. Martin!
Biggest disappointment - not breaking 90
Biggest hope for next season - breaking 90 consistently

| After a great year in Colorado. Played Saturday in Vail shot a 49
26 putts other than that a great round.
Best 9 = 38 Gleneagle C.C. Colorado Springs (2) over bogeyed 9th.
Worst = 96 Both days Dec S/W tournament in Albuquerque M.N
Most Fun= Confidence in my game in match play to come back from
5 down with 4 to go.
Worst time = Finishing 4th in league after dominating all the
competition
Best shot = behind a tree 195 out and sticking a 3 iron on the green
Worst = watching my swing on Video.

Best 9 = 40, Stow Acres South Course front nine
Best 18 = 83, Stow Acres South Course (new personal best)
Wosrt 18 = 95 at Stow on the day after I shot an 84.
Most Fun = Breaking my personal best score 4 times this year.
(That Golf Digest mini-school paid off.)
Best shot = 40 foot sand shot to 3 feet to save par.
Other Accomplishments:
Playing following new courses:
Kemper Lakes and Cog Hill - Chicago area
Kingsmill - Willamsburg, Maryland
Aside - Kemper Lakes surronds the headquarters of Kemper
Insurance. It must be torture to have to stare out at such a
beautiful course on a nich sunny day.
Worst Frustration - Having to cope with the rapidly approaching
end to the golf season just when I'm playing my best.

| A much better season for me this year, and it's not over yet.
I'm heading to Myrtle Beach in November, so I've got more rounds
under my belt left to play. In the Merrimack DEC golf league, playing
at Amherst CC, my partner and I managed to make it to the 18 hole
final, only to lose it on the 20th hole. My handicap dropped this
year from 10 to 8(over 9 holes) and I'm hitting the ball better,
still not great, but better.
BEST round (9holes)- 42 in the finals match.
WORST round (9holes)- 62 in the midseason, but certainly not
in midseason form!
BEST 18 - 93 at Portsmouth CC from the whites. Only 3-putted
twice and one 1-putt. What a beautiful course, located on Great
Bay. The ocean doesn't really come into play, but it's nice to look
over. I've never played a course that has the bunkers contain that
kind of sand, all the other courses have had beach type sand, but
this sand was more like tiny little rocks. In fact it is exactly
the type of sand in my pool filter. It was the easiest time I
ever had getting out of a bunker, you can get the club under the
ball easily and get nice loft to it. Are all of the "better"
courses laid out with the bunkers having this type of sand? It
also looks prettier, being white rather than the brownish beach
sand. This is a Robert Trent Jones designed course. I would
recommend it highly, $22 for weekday, weekend price unknown, with
a day in advance reservation requested. The phone # for those
interested is: (603) 436-9719. It was rated the 2nd best course
in the state by Golf Digest.

| Last round (I think) of the season last Saturday, Oct. 31, at Pine
Meadows in Lexington. Started with a par and ended with a par (and
nothing flukey about either of them), had some adventures on 2 -
8 (a 9-hole course), but hit it pretty solidly (once again my putting
left me [and after I'd thought I had the stroke smoothed out - must
have been the hard, superfast greens]). Particularly pleased with
the finish - 125-yard par 3; 9-iron straight at the pin, 2 putts
and over. Came back to the house, cleaned & polished the clubs,
emptied out the bag, and stowed all the gear in the basement till
January (trip to Phoenix - any more suggestions on places to play
out there?). Isn't it Spring yet??

| Well, here in western Mass., 2 inches of snow dropped last night
with predictions for another 3 to 6 inches coming tonight. I guess
that's it for me, unless I hit the lottery or something!!! Boy
would I love to be going to Myrtle Beach or Arizona or Florida or
I HATE WINTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Boy, aren't we being pessimistic. Frank's already cleaned his
clubs and stored them away and now the 'Beak' is truly down in the
dumps .....
Cheer up, guys - sure we in Southern NH, too, had 2-4 inches last
night and more promised for tonight. However, the forecast also
projects that it'll be all gone by the weekend. Can't play again
till then anyway - the ground's just a little too frosty for my early
round of 9 most mornings now. But I'm sure looking forward to
the 3-club tournament we've got scheduled for this Sunday (one we've
had planned for three weekends earlier and each time rained out;
we can't possibly miss out again, can we???!!!!
Besides, there's always the "Cape" .......

| Well, not exactly: I did clean the clubs and store them in the basement
for the winter, but I have a backup set available...and if we do
get a warm spell that melts the 6 - 8 " of "partly cloudy" on the
ground, I may be able to fulfill my promise to my golf partner of
"one more time" before calling it quits for the season. And, it's
true - there's always the Cape (unless we get a rerun of last winter,
when they had more snow there than we had in the Boston area).
