Great victory - I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing recorded
on video next week. I wonder how Jack Nicklaus feels, being the
first team captain to lose on home ground...

154.2 | Congrats to Europe | USSCSL::MICHAELS | Why Soitanly... Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk | Mon Sep 28 1987 17:03 | 17 |
| Definite congrats to the European Team... I watched the final matches
yesterday and the Americans made quite a charge to make the final
very respectable after being quite far behind. It was my first
chance to see the European players and I was quite impressed with
them. Much was made by the American golf press that the "BIG GUNS"
from Europe (Ballesteros, Langer, Lyle, Faldo etc..) have not won
on the tour here but I believe that a few (including that irish
fellow whose name escapes me) could win here. Being an American
I am of course dissapointed and feel badly for Jack losing in his
first effort as captain. As a last comment (not sour grapes) I
don't believe America put its best foot forward team wise.
We'll get ya next time.

As an American I have to say congrats to the Europeans also. I didn't
think they would be able to pull it off on such an American course
as the beautiful Muirfield Village. I thought the Europeans might
have trouble on that type of course, being so different than links
type golf that seems to be predominant in Europe.
The last note mentioned that the 'Big Guns' from europe haven't
won here? Ballesteros won the Masters twice, Langer won it once,
didn't Lyle win the World Series of Golf 2 years ago?

Sandy Lyle won the TPC this year.
In addition, Ken Brown won the Southern Open.
Both are PGA tour events.

Dan Pohl ? Eamon Darcy ? Who are those guys? Truthfully, I like
the courses better in Scotland?Ireland, but they only expanded the
format to include Europe because otherwise Gbritain/Scotland/Ireland
would never win. If that didn't work, they'd have included S. Africa
and Australia. Don't get me Wrong, Congrats to the "bad guys", they
played better and deservred to win, but when Samuel Ryder donated
the cup, he didn't set it up this way. As Evel Knievel said " You
can't say you're gonna jump the Grand Canyon and jump some other
canyon".

154.8 | It Still Ain't The Same... | PIGGY::VARLEY | | Tue Oct 20 1987 17:15 | 22 |
| I seem to have trod upon "Mr"s" toes after reading 154.7. My intention
in 154.6 was to congratulate the Europeans for their Ryder cup victory,
but to point out as well that what we saw at Muirfield wasn't the
real Ryder cup. I'd like to see Ballesteros, Langer and Woosnam
on our tour, because they're great players, but only if they can
abide by the appearance requirements etc. set down by the PGA.
There still is no single International tour as strong as the U.s.
tour - fact, not arrogance, and I believe that although the current
top level talent pool for G/britain & Europe has been better for
the last several years, most of them (and "regular players" as well)
don't play over here because no one can pay them appearance money
and other perks. Here you have to ante up and tee it up, and if
you can't cut it, you're down the road.
Just for the record, I've played "both" Muirfields, and the one
in Scotland is a hell of a lot better than the one in Ohio (at least
based on my impressions this summer), and neither is as good as
Royal County Down.
Dissentingly,
Jack Varley
