140.1 | Clubs Can Make A Difference! | COOKIE::CHAVEZ | Dale C. - CXO3 Colo Spgs | Fri Aug 14 1987 00:32 | 22 |
| In today's world, clubs can indeed make a difference. Perimeter weighting
makes a tremendous difference in striking a golf ball. You can mishit
a perimeter-weighted club, and the ball still manages to go in the general
direction you wanted to. Try that with regular forged irons and you get
what you pay for: bad swing produces bad golf shot.
Sports Illustrated had an *excellent* article on golf club design about two
weeks ago. Read it if you can.
There is a definite faction out on the pro tour regarding club modification
nowadays. People like Ray Floyd, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus are *against*
modifications that make the game easier for the pro-level player.
Square-grooves in irons is a good example of an idea that has gone too far.
A *professional* golfer can hit a down-wind, downhill approach to a green
with the pin tucked in the back using square-grooves and the ball will
*BACK-UP* when it hits the green for krisakes! The same pro can hit the
same golf shot using forged irons with v-shaped grooves, and the ball
rolls off the back of the green.
Bottom line: clubs *can* make a difference in scoring.

140.2 | square grooves help....sometimes! | PARITY::JRYAN | | Mon Aug 17 1987 17:39 | 13 |

RE. -1
The layest info on the square-groove vs. V-groove indicates that
from the fairway there is no advantage to using either. The advantage
is in hitting the square-grooved irons from the rough. The
square-grooves minimize the effect of grass between the ball and
club face and thus gives a advantage. See this months Golf Digest
(I think it's Golf Digest). They did a good job explaining the
governing body's position on the subject.

140.3 | ripped-off? sounds like a deal to me | DIXIE1::KLEIN | | Fri Aug 21 1987 21:03 | 6 |
| Re .0
I wouldn't worry about being 'ripped-off' the $315 you spent
on the whole set can easily be spent just on a set of irons.
$315 for a complete set, woods/irons, of a pro-line set is a
good price!

140.4 | A great buy!!! | HEFTY::WELLSPEAK | It's a Boy | Mon Aug 24 1987 21:05 | 15 |
| I think you got an excellent deal!!! The price listed in
Golf Digests 1987 Equipment Preview Buyers Guide, for Ram Laser
X-2's was 9 irons - $540 4 woods - $340
Which means you could probably pick up an entire set at say a
Nevavda Bobs for about $550 to $600. If you only payed $315, you
got a steal. They are described as "Heel-toe weighting. U-shaped
grooves/Cambered sole." They also have Frequency matched shafts.
Although I've never used them, they sound like very nice clubs.
I bought new clubs this past spring, Spaulding XL4's, that are
perimeter weighted, and the definately help your game. As said
before, off center shots go further and less off line than traditional
clubs.
