128.0. "Does Life Begin After Breaking 40?" by AUTHOR::F_MCGOWAN () Thu Jul 16 1987 13:58

Okay, so I shot one spectacular (for me) 9 holes (see 108.24). Now what?
Well, I'll tell you: Frustration! Much as I tell myself it's unrealistic
to expect to match that every time out, it's damned maddening to not even
get close to it. I attribute the lack of continued success to a couple of
factors:

	1. Trying too hard

and

	2. Trying too hard

Conditions were also near perfect back in mid-June, too. I'd just come back
from two weeks vacation, playing about every other day, and had things well
grooved; and started the round that day at noon, well rested and fed, in the
company of people I could relax with. And (let's be totally honest) the
course was not especially tough.

Nonetheless, for the past three weeks or so, my scores have been skyrocketing,
and my confidence has been plummeting. My question is: Has this phenomenon
occurred with others? How have you reacted to a great round? Any advice
would be appreciated. If I don't get back on track soon, there will be
another entry in the Buy/Sell note!

I think you're trying too hard. Golf should be a relaxing game! Don't
even think about trying to better a great score. (It won't happen.)
Just go out and enjoy the game; your play will become more natural,
you'll have more fun, and your game/scores will begin to improve on
    their own.

An average round of golf for a 10-20 handicapper includes a few
great shots and a few really horrible ones. The key to lower scores
is eliminating the horrible ones. There is a fine line between putting
    a 5 iron 3 feet from a tucked pin and dumping a 5 iron into a trap.

Scores are sometimes not very reflective of the shots you make.
If you want to improve your scores start measuring things like greens
    in regulation and sand saves.

The fewest putts award at golf tournaments shoud also be called
the "person who missed the most greens" award. Aim for the center
of the green, and the pars will take care of themselves. It will
also help you to stay out of alot of trouble that breeds high scores.

A low score is impossibe if your putting is off, so if you must
    work on anything...putt putt putt!!
