-< Some tapes plus cable >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the most mentioned is Jack Nicklaus' Golf My Way. It is
good and complements his book The Full Swing. In addition to
fundamentals, covers uneven lies, deliberate hooks and fades, high
    and low shots, etc.

Tapes I have seen and not particularly liked are by Sam Snead (forget
the name), Bob Mann's Automatic Golf, and Al Geiberger's Cybervision.
Snead's tape is very fundamental and didn't seem to have any note
worthy tips or systematic approach. Bob Mann's tape was filmed
in a motel room and is priced according to its quality ($14-16).
Geiberger's tape is simply repetitive slow motion swings
with music ... supposed to ingrain a swing image in your subconscious
kind of like how I used to study in school by putting the book under
    my pillow while I slept.

The Jimmy Ballard Golf Connection is a 1/2 hour instructional show
on ESPN every week. He also has a video tape, but I haven't seen
    it.

Another show on cable (TMPO) is The Name of the Game is Golf. It
doesn't seem to be on regularly, but comes out of the Ben Sutton
    golf school.

While we're on cable, ESPN also has a weekly show called Inside
the PGA Tour which reviews the past week's tournament, has player interview,
and a tip from a pro.

I just got a VISA application for golfers that has a video tape
library as a side benny. I'm thinking about signing up just to
get the tapes but the joining fee is $40. Tapes are free though.
Anyone have any experience with this? Do they have good tapes?
Is the waiting time reasonable? Are they really free to rent?

The very best video tape to help you with your game is a tape of
yourself! I wish I owned a camera, but I have rented one several
times. If you can set it up so you can hit a few shots, review
them, hit again, etc. you will be amazed at what you see. Many
of us have a decent image of a good swing but just can't tell how
close (or far!) from that image our swing really is.

Finally, I would like to throw in question about golf schools.
Anyone have good or bad experiences? What should you look for?
How long of a school is useful ... ie. do you get burned out in
a 5 day school versus a 2-3 day one? How much can you really absorb
in a short period of time? What kind of student/teacher ratio is
    best?

Has anybody seen The Greater Golfer in You - by Dr. Gary Wiren?

Has anybody seen Ben Crenshaw's The Art of Putting...?

Has anybody seen any video's that they would like to comment on?
I plan to order one, possible one of the twp mentioned above, but
I would like to get some input if possible first...

107.5MIKE SMITH'S TRICK SHOTS!DARTS::DIAZCMG/CDG/SAMGMon Mar 13 1989 13:1028
Do you need a round of golf to relax and forget about your problems?

Are you angry because the courses didn't open this weekend?

Maybe the next to best thing is a videotape I rented this weekend. I
knew I would forget the exact name, but is something like "GOLFMANIA"
I will look at it again and post the exact name.

It features Mike Smith, a trick shot pro, he carries the largest bag
I have ever seen, and I don't mean only the size, but the number and
    types of clubs.

The whole thing is filmed at LA Costa resort in California, and has
Merv (sp) Olsen (of FTD commercials) as MC, and many TV personalities
(including Bob Hope) help Mike with the funny shots.

I will only describe one of his clubs, it is a wood with a shaft that
has about five universal joints, which allow at least 90 degrees turn
in every direction, it is almost like attaching a club head to the
end of a chain, so swinging it has a wip effect and in the backswing
and follow-through can be very dangerous . Just to see him standing
in front of the ball and see that thing hanging straight down and
never even be close to the ball at address cracked me. Well he hits
    that sucker every time.

You may not learn anything but is a god laugh!

107.7A New Technique? Start the Season Fresh...DINSCO::BURKEJeff BurkeTue Mar 21 1989 14:5353
Recently, my wife bought me the "Make Every Shot a Nice Shot" video by
Chuck Hogan. I noticed in either Golf or Golf Digest that it was rated
5 stars each in presentation and instruction, and I would have to agree.
I have seen quite a few videos, and I believe "Nice Shot" is the best, or
at least the best for me based on my game.

"Golf My Way" tends to focus on golf mechanics, which is needed when you
first start to play. "Nice Shot" (referred to as the SEA method) seems to
emphasize the mental aspect of the game. Specifically, how can you store
golfing information in your brain so that you can call upon it whenever you
desire. [How? They say studies prove that actions repeated 60 times per
day for 21 consecutive day are stored in our memories forever.] "Nice
Shot" is definitely not a golf mechanics video.

The video starts off with a comical situation where a fellow hits a long
approach shot into a water hazard. His shot is sarcastically termed a
"nice shot" since his brain *perfectly* executed what was envisioned by the
golfer. The next scene goes back into his brain prior to the shot and
provides his stream-of-consciousness:

       "Geez, I h-a-t-e this hole...
Par 4... right... it should be a Par 14...
I'm *supposed* to hit this over the hazard and onto the green?
   	Right... And I'm Jack Nicklaus..."

	SWING................... s-p-l-a-s-h!!!

[reminds me of me, on occasion, playing the Stow North 9th]

The idea is to stop all internal dialogue before the shot. If you have
negative thoughts going through your mind prior to the shot (during
pre-swing routine) the brain will be confused when it comes time to
execution. Positive thoughts will lead to more positive results.

The major emphasis of the video is on proper set-up -- alignment, grip,
etc. The idea is that once you understand the basics of ball flight
(square clubface contact, swing plane, etc.) you should be able to set-up,
stop the internal dialogue, pull the trigger and hit a nice shot. To do
this consistently you need to "practice" a good grip, 60 times per day, 21
consecutive days. The same for the stance and other things that need
to be remembered. To address mechanics, there are some Sybervision-like
techniques throughout the video which show women and men swings.

I'd recommend the video to anyone who has a good feel for the mechanics
of golf. I believe it cost $79.95 at the Middleton Pro Shop. I recently
took a group indoor lesson (my first!!) and the pros (from Vesper and
Indian Ridge) were discussing SEA techniques to "remember" a grip
or swing or whatever. When I asked if they endorsed SEA they said
positively, and that the video is one of the best.

Jeff

BTW, Peter Jacobsen, Mike Reid and D.A. Weibring are SEA converts...

Has any one seen the Bob Jones collection that sybervision sells for
$245. It's very expensive isn't it. Sybervision did a half hour
commercial before last Sunday's final round. I recorded it as well as
friday and saturday. I watched the half hour promo and the actual Bob
Jones footage wasn't bad. Has any one taken the plung?

I hope I am not being redundant but doing a quick scan of the Notesfile I couldn't see anything
close so here goes.

I am looking for people's opinion on what they think is the "Best Teaching Golf Video."

Considering all aspects of the game...

I have heard the Al Geiberger's Tape is excellent but would like to get more opinions before
I spend the money.

I know that personal lessons would probably do more for my game but the time and money are
not in my budget right now...

DW

ps. And another thing...has anybody notice that Golf is taking longer to play (more people on the
course no matter what time you go ! And, is geeting to be a very expensive sport !!!

I have a copy of "Bob Mann's Automatic Golf". I've never heard anything
bad about this tape except that you don't see Bob Mann in many
tournaments. Also, it's not oriented to getting the best short game or
anything like that, it's strictly a "swing" trainer.

That aside, it's helped me immensely in my swing (although time with a
pro helped much more). I know a half-dozen people who raved about the
tape, which is why I bought it.

It was worth the $12.95 I paid for it anyway.

    I give it a half-hearted "thumbs-up" (mostly because it's entire
    orientation is "long game").

Some of the better golfers in this conference (which is probably every
one else *but* me) probably hate this tape... Any other comments?

Re. 4 - No, there's a lot in the Bob Mann tape that's usable, whether
you follow his grip procedure or not (and the grip he shows seems
pretty standard, even if how he gets there is a little strange). The
tape itself suffers from some pretty cheesy production values (most of
it seems to have been shot in a motel conference room); but the content
of the tape is quite good. Of special value is what he says and demon-
strates about the role of the feet and legs in the swing. For the
price (around $12 - $15), it's a pretty good bargain, if nowhere near
as comprehensive as other tapes on the market.

excellent job defining the latesttheory in golf, that is a natural

tapes still referencing the old pull from the left side approach.

Ballard is a proven winner that is the instructor for many of today's

addition, he is the lead teaching pro at Doral.
