Get yourself a practice net! I bought one about a month ago and it has been great. I used to be a great skeptic of hitting into nets because you can't see the ball's trajectory, but I've changed my tune after having one. It is good for: 1. getting/keeping in golfing shape when the weather is bad (I set mine up in my garage). I'm starting off this season in as good as shape as I ended last year ... calluses, etc. 2. forcing me to concentrate on my swing rather than watching the ball. I have a much better sense of feel now. I can easily distinguish a solid hit from a topped hit, a thin hit, a heel hit, or a toe hit. Concentrating on feel is especially important when developing some new aspect of my swing. Ball-hypnosis can keep you from trying a new motion long enough to get it right. 3. saving $ at the driving range 4. practicing a lot more than I could if I had to get in my car and go somewhere. It's easy to just go out and take a few swings. My number of mishits during my first few rounds this year were much lower than last year. 5. hitting a real ball is much more useful than hitting whiffle balls in the back yard. It is still important to go out to the range every now and then to see the ball's trajectory, but if I have been hitting the ball consistently and solidly with the net then any fades or draws that I have built in are pretty easy to straighten out. Most importantly, it's fun to beat those balls when I can't get out on the course enough to feed the addiction...

Good point(s)! Just remember that you need to hit full shots and see them too. If you have a problem that you are trying to iron out, then nets are great. Their especially great now when you can't get to a course or range yet. I wish they would put the one up here in Marlboro where I live. I've broken enough lamps with me 9 iron (just kidding). Could you please describe these practice nets? Is it just a back-drop, or does it have some shape? What holds it up? How big is it? Cost? Where'd ya get it? And how tall a ceiling does one need to take a full swing with a wood?! (being 6-3 doesn't help I'm sure). Sounds very interesting at any rate, EriC
87.3 | 7x9 with tube frame | MDVAX1::TATUM | Tue Apr 21 1987 19:06 | 21
My net is 7 feet high, 9 feet wide, and about 4 feet deep. It consists of a net suspended on a metal tube frame so it is self-standing. The frame comes in 4 foot sections kind of like tent poles. Retail price was $79 but I got it on a 'spring sale' for $39 at Pro Golf. You can get them mail order, too, but why bother if you can get a good price locally. The way this particular frame is constructed, I can fold back the 'legs' so that the whole thing is flat and can set against my garage wall. By not having to disassemble it, I can use my garage as a garage and then set up the net in a minute or two. I am 6 foot and can swing a driver in a room with a 9 foot ceiling. However, be careful of the garage door tracks, opener, etc.! My 3 wood has a gouge in it as I painfully learned that lesson. Also, don't miss the net ... eg. using a wedge not close enough to the net to catch it. I have two golf balls somewhere in my attic and two nice little holes in my garage ceiling!

I realize that I am very late in responding to this note... I hope .0 will respond... What surface do you use to hit the ball from? If outdoors, the ground is just fine, but my yard will take a beating... but if set up in garage do you have a mat similar to the driving range? Smitty
87.5 | Carpet scraps | MDVAX1::TATUM | Sat Aug 15 1987 00:45 | 9
I have a lot of carpet scraps left over that I use. They don't hold up very well but I have a lot of them! I'd like to get a mat (ala driving range) but haven't done so yet ... mainly because I use the net a whole lot less now that I can get out and play more frequently. Another unfortunate consequence for me was hitting so many balls that I developed some back trouble ... the moral is the usual "be careful before undertaking any strenuous new exercise..." |
