    A golf notesfile! I'm dead! It will be hard to resist looking at
    this every day.
    
    Now at the end of an endless New England winter, I'm thinking back
    to last summer and one of the best golf deals I've ever had. My
    wife and I booked two days at a resort in Digby, Nova Scotia called
    The Pines. We ended up extending our stay because it was so nice,
    so uncrowded, and so reasonable.
    
    The Pines is a grand old hotel that is now run by the government.
    Don't panic -- the best hotels in Canada are the government-run
    places. Clean as a whistle with good service. We went early in July,
    and it wasn't full. The hotel is a big old place overlooking Digby
    Harbor from the side of a hill. You can stay in the hotel or rent
    one of the cabins that are off in the woods. There's a nice swimming
    pool that I never saw anyone use.
    
    The hotel restaurant is elegant. It's a great way to end a day of
    golf. Not cheap -- dinner is $27 Canadian -- but worth it.
    
    The course is about 6300 yards long, somewhat hilly, nicely maintained,
    and nearly empty. I played three times, and each time I waited for
    someone to play with, only to go out alone. I usually joined up
    with someone I caught. It's not a spectacular course, but a challenging
    little number that's fairly narrow with big pine trees down either
    side. The 16th is one of the most beautiful short par 3s I've ever
    played. You walk down a Bridge on the River Kwai-type footbridge
    to descend to the green. It's only about 125 yards long, but the
    drop is so steep that you're blind to the green on the tee.
    
    A nice, modest clubhouse with good cheeseburgers and Canadian beer.
    In the summer it's light till about 10:00 p.m.
    
    So....if you're going to Canada and want some unhurried golf on
    a decent course, consider The Pines in Digby, NS. I think it was
    about $60US per night, greens fee was $11 or $12. I liked it.

    on the way home tonight).
    
    I'll leave a note about the St. Martin Mullet Bay course here the
    week after next.  We'll see how she plays...
