31.0. "Norman Heir Apparent to Nicklaus?" by GENRAL::DCHAVEZ (Dale C. - CXO3 Colo Spgs) Mon Aug 11 1986 20:54

There have been numerous 'heirs apparent' to Jack Nicklaus over the past 8
to 10 years, but all have seemed to be justa wet dream...that is until
Greg Norman came along. Granted, everone is on Greg's bandwagon nowthat he
has won (or should win 2 of the majors), but he is not in awe of anyone in
the game, northe tradition of it.

Noran is the first goler since Niclaus that has a viable chance to win th
the Grand Slam next year (ie, talent-wise). As Nicklaus has said numerous
times, a golfer needs a certain amount of luck, breaks, etc. in orer to
win the Grand Slam, but Norman seems to create his own breaks.

Any other thoughts?

    	I agree Dale. I've been watching Norman for a while now
    and feel he's the one to contend with. (oh when that shark bites)
    BTW, are you going to try and hit the "International" up in
    Castle rock this weekend? Most of the "big names" are scheduled
    to show up.

31.2A Great Year, But ...BLUES::OGRENMon Aug 11 1986 22:5817
    Sure we have ideas!

    Norman has great control for somebody with his power. It's a shame
    it's taken him so long to get going. Apart from my bias for tall
    golfers, he still posesses a good short game and his course management
    is tons better! He's already 31 though, which means he'll be in
    the Watson class of dominating for 5 years rather than the major
    star class of dominating for 7+ years. I don't think Greg has time
    to accumulate the career stats necessary for greatness. It'll be
    fun to watch him in future majors.

    Not sure about other heirs on the tour. As soon as a Mark O'Meara
    or Curtis Strange comes out, they disappear. Now it looks like Bob
    Tway, Davis Love III, or Scott Verplank have distinguished themselves.
    Can they do it for the next couple of years??

31.3Parity on PGACOOKIE::CHAVEZDale C. - CXO3 Colo SpgsMon Aug 10 1987 19:239
Well over a year has passed since I posted the original note here regarding
the heirs apparent to Nicklaus. I predicted Greg Norman would come through
this year, but it didn't happen.

Has parity finally been achived on the Professional Golf Tour? Gawd, I
hope not. I enjoy seeing someone dominate (even if it's only a year).

31.4There will never be an heirPNO::MORGANFri Jan 08 1988 15:2116

     The days of Jack Nicklaus are pretty much over and I think it

     is safe to classify Jack by himself. Nobody will dominate the tour

     again. There are just too many talented players for it to happen.

     Greg's game is great one day, terrible the next. Greg probably

     has more raw talent than any other player on tour; however, it

     is raw and will probably stay that way.

    See the ariticle on the decline of the .400 hitter in baseball in
    Stephen Jay Gould's book "The Flamingo's Smile." In a nutshell,
    he believes that as sports mature a statistical phenomena takes
    over and parity is achieved. See article for details. But I think
    that he is correct.

    Well said. I considered it a great "blessing" to see Jack play at the
    1988 International. Even though is on the "other side of the hill" in
    his game, it gave me goose-bumps to see his concentration and
    determination from tee to green. I believe that *this*, more than his
    phyiscal skills, is what sets Jack Nicklaus apart from any other golfer
    to date.

    Is it just me or has Norman really been playing poorly since
    he signed the hat contract with Kangol and now wears those big
    wide brimmed "Gamblers" hats .

    Norman also change club manufacturer (sp?), I remember hearing
    about this towards the end of last year when there was some type
    of point tournament on TV. Since switching he has gone into the
    pooper. He did have a good showing last week. Seems he forgot how
    to play on Sunday though.

    He has a recurring back injury this year that has affected his play
    somewhat this year, but I personally feel that all the demands on his
    time have finally caught up with him. He's still one of the top five
    golfers in the world today, but he needs to start winning some major
    tournaments or he'll forever be remembered as the 'hard-luck' guy that
    could never win the big one.

31.12Another encouraging/discouraging outingVERGA::F_MCGOWANTue Sep 17 1991 13:2914
    It looked good for a while at the Hardees Quad Cities tournament, but
    then Norman was afflicted by what appeared to be the yips on the short
    putts: he'd make one from 20', then push or pull one on the next
    green from 4 to 6 feet away. He's been quoted as saying it's his tech-
    nique, but to me he seems to have lost confidence at that distance,
    which is what brought Arnie's game down (he used to gun the first putt
    boldly, without fear of missing, because he knew he could make the
    come-backer, but once he started missing those, it was all over).

    P.S. Re. 31 - am I wrong, or didn't Greg win the British Open about 5
         years ago (no, not the one he "should" have won, that Calcavecchia
         won in the 4-hole playoff)?
