19.1 | Par-6? | STKSWS::LITBY | Per-Olof Litby, CSC Stockholm | Mon Jun 23 1986 16:53 | 20 |
| At Wittsj GCC, roughly 100 km northeast of Malm in the south
of Sweden, is a very interesting hole. The 6th hole is a
par-five of 540 metres (600 yards). And as if that wasn't
enough, there are two ditches (creeks?) crossing the fairway
in the drive/second shot landing areas. Along the entire right
side of the fairway you have out of bounds bordered by another
stream. The green is of the postage-stamp type and enclosed
in a collection of big oak trees with only a 15-metre wide
opening in the front.
It is a formidable hole, and would definitely be unfair and
therefore very uninteresting if it wasn't for the
adrenalin-generating effect it has on the player. When you stand
on the elevated tee, it is as if the hole said to you, 'Come on
and get me! All you need is three good shots...' and you find
yourself thinking, 'OK, let's go for it...'. And then of course,
you end up out of bounds or in the ditch...

19.2 | Arrowhead CC #3 | CLOUD9::SPT_BRINKLEY | | Mon Jun 23 1986 21:42 | 15 |
| The 3rd hole at Arrowhead Country Club in Denver, Colorado is a
real challenge. The hole is 188 yards from the whites and 199 from
the championship tees. It's slightly uphill. The green has two bunkers,
a small one on the right hand side and a larger bunker on the right
hand side that the green slides around. On the back side is a giant
(and I mean bigger than life) sandstone formation that shields the
green of any long balls. If you miss to the right you're looking
at a 4 at best and probably a 5. Miss to the left and you're ok
but have to pop a shot over a bunker and hold a small green. Shoot
it long and you'd better say your prayers as the ball kareems off
the rock in any number of directions, none of which are desireable.
Pin placement can be a real bear when it's placed next to the rock.

// OB \oooo/ v
| <----------------- 180 yds ----------------> | \-# _
Features:
1. 1 st. Hole -- requires a long iron(165-190 yds).
2. Creek ------- Along the right on tee shot
Must cross on the shot
Along the left on second shot
Behind green on second shot
3. Woods ------- Large trees on hill to the left of tee shot
300 feet tall no chance of clearing.
Large trees on outside corner of dog leg.
Large trees on left of second shot.
4. Lake -------- in front and to the left of then Green.
5. OB ---------- Out of Bounds on right of tee shot, and
the right of second shot.
Notes:
1. No chance of cutting the corner(I have tried). If you do clear
the trees 300 ft., then you must carry 250 yds and
land between a lake and a creek!
2. Since it is the first hole it is very difficult to hit your
first shot of the day with a long iron. It must fly between
160 and 185 yards and be straight, or better yet a slight
draw.
3. If you don't fly the green with some back spin to hold the
ball, you end up either with an uphill chip shot of a penalty
stroke to get out of the creek.
Conclusion:
If you can hit a nice easy 4 iron with a little hook, and then
a short iron to the center of the green the hole is easy, but
if you miss a shot look out! I played against a very good golfer
who calmly took a 14 on this hole and later had a hole-in-one
on the number 8.

19.5 | Sting Ray | AUTHOR::F_MCGOWAN | | Tue Jun 16 1987 13:46 | 20 |
| Toured a few cities/resort areas in Mexico last month and found
quite a few holes that were strange, difficult or beautiful; the
one that was the most beautiful (and not so easy) was the 18th at
Las Hadas (in Manzanillo). This course is a Pete Dye design, replete
with his trademarks (water and sand), and is a gorgeous layout in
its entirety, finishing at a hole that is the most beautiful
I've seen since I started playing in the early 60's. It's called
the Manta Ray, and definitely has a sting to it: it's a par 3, 145
yards, from a highly elevated tee to a green that dares you to hit
to the left (where lies Santiago Bay) to let the wind bring the
ball in to the stick. Lying behind the green is the Las Hadas resort,
which is a fantastic mix of Byzantine and Disneyworld, dazzlingly
white in the blazing sunlight. The overall effect is a melange of
hot white, deep blue water, and lush green. I'm glad my wife saved
some film so we were able to get some good shots of the Manta Ray!
Oh, I bogeyed the hole (3 putted).

| ref. .3
I have found a hole almost identical to the one discribed in .3.
It is located at Tory Pines country club resort in Francestown,
New Hampshire, hole #7. I had heard this course's hole were laid
out as replica's of famous holes throughout the world.

19.7 | CLOSE TO IMPOSSIBLE | SANFAN::GRANT_JO | | Tue Aug 30 1988 16:41 | 17 |
| Try the 10th at Spyglass Hill in Pebble Beach, California. 430
yards, dogleg left. There is a canyone along the left side of the
fairway, so anything down there is lost. The fairway slopes to
the left so you have to hit your drive down the right side. (Did
I mention that the fairway is, for the first 300 yards, actually
a hill?) Of course, there is sand, deep rough, and woods along
the right side. The green is elevated and tightly trapped with
the kind of bunkers so deep you can't see the green from the bottom.
Of course the green is tiny, and hard as a rock. But none of this
is the problem. The problem is the two gigantic trees in the middle
of the fairway, about 100 yards short of the green. The only way
to play the hole - and I can't do it - is to hit a drive of about
280-285 (no longer, because there is another canyone lurking) down
the right side and then hook a very high short iron into the green.
The whole course is impossible, this side of Ben Hogan in a mean
mood.
