This cluster now has a cluster alias:
STKHLM (or 51336 until your node databases get updated)
Not exactly imaginative - I guess it could be interpreted as
STocKHoLM - our system manager couldn't be accused of having a
sense of humour.
Please modify your entries (MODIFY ENTRY/FILE=STKHLM::GOLF) to
reflect this change.

Genes reply in another topic & a couple items that I had been thinking about
made me want to start a new topic to discuss conference issues.
Re: Copied from 844.39

If someone is new I like to point them to the note. A reminder that
a DIR/TIT may solve their problem is reasonable. If you've looked
and can't find a topic you should mention that in your note.
> What are other peoples thoughts on this matter? Should I/we just

Definitely leave old topics that have some lasting value. For
example I refer to the various vacation trip reports when traveling.
Notes about what courses are open loose there value over time.
> While I'm on the subject of conference issues, should I continue

I like it when you do that. One suggestion, please don't gang them
up in one note. DECwindows pulls over the hole note before letting
you start to read the note. I just pulled up driving ranges and
waited several minutes on a snowy Sunday afternoon before I could
continue.

The last item I wanted to mention was that the tone of the conference has seemed
to gotten more contentious and less collegial. A couple of other noters have
also expressed that to me.
One of the best things about golfing is the friends and the atmosphere of
struggle against a common opponent (the course). Yes, we compete with each
other, but we compete foremost with ourselves.
Is it just me or do others feel the same way?

First off, Gene you're doing a very good job as moderator.
Don't change what you've been doing. Having one topic about a
particular subject is the best way, as oppossed to letting people
write new topics about a subject that currently has a discussion
going on in another topic. Some people don't like to read thru
numerous replies that are already entered, to find an answer to
their question. Well, if everyone felt the same way, and just created
another topic to get an amswer, we'ld have 25,000 topics with 100
replies in each. Iy just becomes to unmanagable.
Second, about swingweight. I know what it is, and I know about
how it get's measured. What I don't know is what one is right for
me, and why it's right. What I mean is, I've had knowlegable golf
people tell me, that if your pusing the ball right and/or slicing,
then you need a lighter swingweight so the clubhead won't lag behind
your swing and be open at impact. I've had other knowlegable people
tell me just the opposite, and recommend a heavier swingweight to
compensate for this problem. I also know, the speed of your swing
has some determination to your ideal swingweight. Can anyone give
me a good description of how to choose a swingweight that is suited
to you?

| Gene,
I too like the organization you provide as moderator. It's true
that it can be cumbersome to search for an answer, but I don't
think old messages should be deleted, as many of them offer
very useful information. Also, you sound like a very nice person
and seem to go out of your way to provide full and complete
answers to the questioning.
Regarding the point made back a couple of replies ago, I think
by Larry, about a somewhat less than friendly tone. I feel that
way too, sometimes. I hesitate to reply to many notes for fear
that I might get blasted. But I think Gene does a fairly good
job at not letting things get too out of hand, and there are
many noters here who seem to want to make an effort to get
things back on a friendly track.
Another point: I think the tone tends to be very technical,
especially during these winter months when many of us can't
PLAY because of winter weather. All that technical jargon
tends to be intimidating to we less-than-technical golfers
who LOVE to play, but can't really offer much to the technical
discussions. I'll admit that some of it is interesting, and
I try to learn from it, but most of it goes right over my head.
Some of the arguments (or maybe debates would be the better
word--I don't mean arguments in the negative sense) against
club fitting and specs etc, and in favor of "sound fundamentals"
may be related to the point I'm trying to make here.
At any rate, I wouldn't keep up with this notesfile everyday
if I didn't enjoy it. I appreciate all your efforts, Gene.

| **DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY **
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Message from Ron Glover Corporate Personnel OCT 1990
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the last several months Digital has been contacted by a number
of individuals and business entities that were angry about negative
comments made about them in our Notesfiles and Conferences. As the
Personnel Policy Manager for Digital I have been the recipient of
many of those notes. I thought I should take the time to post this
note to inform employees that it is not appropriate for them to make
negative comments or references about any person or business entity
in any of Digital's employee interest notesfile or conferences.
There are several reasons why we are establishing this rule. The
first has to do with fundamental fairness. It is simply not fair for
an employee to make a negative comment about a business when we
don't provide those businesses an opportunity to respond and defend
themselves. This is particularly true given the fact that we have no
way of determining whether the comment is honest, fair or accurate.
Clearly Digital has no intention, or desire, to open up its
notesfiles to third-party businesses so that they can engage in a
debate about whether they provide quality services. The only logical
solution then is to ask our employees to refrain from using the
Notesfiles to air grievances they have with individuals, vendors, or
organizations.
In addition to out concerns about fairness, we are concerned about
the potential damage that these kinds of comments may cause to
third-party businesses. In that regard, employees should understand
that they may be personally liable if the statements they make cause
harm to any person or business. Moreover, there is some possibility
Digital may be held liable for such comments as well. Stated more
simply, comments made in a Notesfile or conference are in no way
privileged or immune from claims of liable, slander or defamation.
We are asking all of the users of Notesfiles to exercise discretion
and judgement in the comments that they make in the system. We are
also asking moderators to go back and review the notesfiles they
moderate and to remove any notes that include derogatory references
to third-party businesses.
Please feel free to contact your moderator if you have any questions
on this subject.

DR::BLINN "A few bricks shy of a load" 43 lines 25-OCT-1990 13:44
-< I've been in touch with Ron, too (via "proxy") >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't had a chance to talk to Ron, but when I got a copy of
the memo early last week, I forwarded it to him, pointing out that
it has resurfaced. Since I've helped corporate security try to
trace "problems" in the past that involved MAIL and Notes, I am, I
guess, perceived as "knowledgeable" in these matters. Anyway, I
got a call yesterday from Richard Seltzer, from Corporate Employee
Communications. Ron had talked to him, and when I talked to
Richard this morning I got the distinct impression that Ron is
very concerned about the wide distribution the "hoax" version of
his memo is receiving -- not because of the suggestions it makes
about reasonable behavior, but because it is being represented as
a new corporate policy on Notes, a "mandate" or "regulation", if
you will. Ron is an incredibly reasonable person, and it would
not be his style to create a new policy (like this is alleged to
be) by administrative mandate. Further, since he is manager for
corporate personnel policies, he is sensitive to the issues.
I think Bob's note in FOLK_MUSIC is superb (but then, Bob and I
are old friends and I value his judgement). It states a very
reasonable analysis of the problem and reasonable guidelines for
personal behavior. It doesn't attempt to "chill" discussion by
placing strict bounds on expression, but rather encourages open
sharing of opinions with respect for the feelings of others.
I can't speak for Ron or Bob, but I think wide adoption of the
guidelines Ron recommended in his original memo is reasonable, and
that Bob's additional thoughts further clarify what I believe was
Ron's intent. I would encourage moderators to use Bob's and Ron's
thoughts as the basis for setting policies in their conferences,
but discourage anyone from claiming Ron's original memo stated a
new "corporate notes policy".
I suspect we will see some follow-up on this within the next few
weeks. I suggested to Richard Seltzer that Ron could notify all
the corporate personnel staff that the recent circulation of the
memo did not originate with him, and is not a new corporate policy
on Notes. I hope he will do this. I also suggested that posting
an explanation on LiveWire would assure that it got visibility in
many quarters. (For example, I would expect it to be copied into
VNS almost immediately, and posted in conferences where Ron's memo
had been posted.) We can only wait and see what will happen.

Hi Again,
Some of you may have already noticed a bunch of new noters...
we have agreed to list the golf notesfile on Notes-News gateway.
This will allow a lot more golfers to enter the notesfile.
So first I'd like to welcome all the newcomers ! I'm sure you
will all feel quite at ease and welcome here... we are happy to
hear from you.
Secondly I'd like to say that we are embarking on unchartered
ground... the Notes-News notesfile process may not work well and
may need some of our patience. Forinstance, they will batch
copy the current notesfile data... and respond sometime later.
This may cause conversational disconnects, as people may respond
to a question that has been answered etc.
So please be patient, there will undoubtedly be a learning
period until everyone becomes familiar with the process...
if you see anyone who may need guidance please jump in and
help out.
thanks,

The best courses in Australia are in Melbourne. This is because of the
sandy soil which provides natural drainage and consistent healthy turf.
Melbourne has one of the highest concentrations of great courses to be
found anywhere in the world. The problem with most of the courses in
the metropolitan area is that they're private - very private.
Trevino once said that he pitied golfing-widows in Melbourne
because as if living in suburbia wasn't bad enough, many people retire
to the Mornington Peninsula around Port Philip Bay to the South-east. Here
again there is the sandy soil along with terrain perfect for golf
courses. Some of the courses in this area are Rosebud, Cape Schank,
Flinders, The National, Portsea and Sorrento all public and great tests
especially when the wind blows. It's this area in April I would
recommend to anyone planning an Australian golfing holiday.
Sydney has some good courses albeit clay-based and there are resort
courses right up the east coast to North Queensland none of which I've
played but would love to visit soon with some buddies and some beers.
Regards,
Geoff

Well, they're consolidating systems in my old group, and have asked
me to find a new home for the Golf notes conference. The systems
here in LJO are not very stable, so I'd rather find it a better home.
So, I'm looking for a volunteer to host the conference -- I'd be
willing to continue to help out as a co-moderator, if someone else
has the system resources (it's not a very big conference). Please
contact me if you can help us out.

Once again, my apologies for the short notice. I have 2 volunteers
for a new home for GOLF.NOTE. The timeing on this is particularly
good, since I have accepted a job "in the real world" after 16 years
at DEC, and this looks to be my last week here. I plan to shut off
access to this file on Wednesday afternoon, and move the file at that
time. Thereafter, the Golf Notes Conference will be available at:
KEPTIN::GOLF.NOTE
I thank you all for your support and understanding.

I've just been told by the owners of OPS5 that they're re-naming the
system tomorrow morning (OPS5 will be the cluster alias for a
DIFFERENT system) so I need to move the file tonight. I'll be
shutting off access later today (in the evening), and then moving the
file over to KEPTIN:: tomorrow morning. I hope everyone re-synchs
with the change. Thanks!

The GOLF conference should be back in business. I've added both Mark
Granoff and Bill Muth as new moderators, who, I am sure, will
help to ensure the continued well being of this endeavour.

1.69 | You found it! Welcome. | KEPTIN::GRANOFF | Keptin! Klingon wessel decloaking... | Wed Jul 12 1995 11:05 | 15 |
| Hello, and welcome to KEPTIN, the GOLF conference's new home! I am your
host, Mark Granoff, sole proprieter here. I am also a new golfer, so I have
an interest in the conference other than consuming disk and network
resources. :-)
In case you care, KEPTIN is a VAXstation 4000 Model 60 with 32MB of memory.
I currently allow a maximum of two simultaneously running Notes servers
each allowing 32 links. That should be more than enough; KEPTIN hosts one
other conference which has very low volume.
KEPTIN is accessible via DECnet (address is 12.313; 12601::GOLF should
work) and TCP/IP at [email protected] (16.20.212.163).
Enjoy,
-Mark (new moderator)

| You might have experienced a problem getting to KEPTIN today; my apologies.
The machine went down several times while I was adding a second tape drive.
Its back now (obviously) and should remain up indefinately (its a VAX
afterall. ;-)
I will try to warn ahead of time of future down time (or limit it to the
Winter when fewer people are playing golf... ;-)

| I have noticed that occasionally my notes server consumes a heap of CPU and
my disks start chattering. Since I have but two conferences on KEPTIN, and
I know this is the active one, I can only assume that someone, somewhere is
doing some kind of complete scan of the conference. I would ask, if people
are doing this in some kind of automated procedure, to do it outside of my
regular business hours (0800-1700 Eastern Time).
Thanks,

| I moved some notes to the official introductions (a.k.a. Registry) note,
and changed to conference notice to make that note (61) obvious.
I retitled note 1 to "Conference Welcome, Issues, & Announcements" to
better describe what the note should (and should not) be used for.

1.77 | Upcoming interruptions in service | KEPTIN::GRANOFF | Keptin! Klingon wessel decloaking... | Thu Sep 14 1995 09:16 | 14 |
| There may be periods in the next few weeks where this conference is
inaccessible.
KEPTIN has a slight hardware problem. Fixing it, which I expect to happen
today, will require a brief shutdown.
I would like to upgrade KEPTIN to OpenVMS VAX V6.2 (and a few other things)
"soon". I've been putting it off, but now I might actually have some time
to do it. So, longer periods of inaccessibility in the next few weeks may
be due to an upgrade in progress.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Figure KEPTIN and this confernece will be unavailable from about 9 Nov 1995

| In the next week or 3, KEPTIN will be moving from LKG1 to LKG2. So, there
will be some time when this conference is not available. At this time, I
don't know exactly when KEPTIN will move.
Also, the move is going to require my changing KEPTIN's DECnet *and* TCP/IP
addresses because my new group sits in a different DECnet area and IP
subnet, respectively. I will try to post a note here with the new
information, but failing that you can check TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES

contact me.
The conference is almost 55000 blocks and gets a reasonable amount of
activity. I've observed as many as 5 or 6 people connected at one time but
rarely is my system's performance (a VAXstation 4000/60 w/ 56MB) degraded
by it.

1.85 | Mark Granoff Leaving Digital | 26031::16.124.40.141::Diaz | | Fri Feb 07 1997 15:12 | 49 |
| I just wanted to let you know that Mark Granoff transfered the conference
because he is leaving Digital. Here is his farewell note he posted in
DIGITAL.
==========================================================================
[I post this here for anyone interested and which whom I have list touch.
-mhg]
It is with some sadness but no regrets that I have tendered my resignation
from Digital. My last day here is Friday, February 21, 1997.
Simply put, this is not the same company I eagerly joined in April 1989.
The opportunities and environment I seek are no longer here.
I had wanted to develop software at Digital for a long time. In 1989 I
joined the Software Services/Engineering group VAXworks in Maynard, MA
(PKO). It wasn't a software engineering job, but it was my foot in the
door. (And at that time, just getting one's foot in the door here required
some luck and timing!) Two and a half years later, I accepted a Senior
Software Engineering position with the PATHWORKS group in Littleton (LJO,
LKG). Finally! Software Engineering! I made contributions, learned a lot,
and forged new friendships. In June 1995 I moved to Remote Access
Engineering (LKG) where I contributed to and delivered two products in 12
months. I was part of a small, agile team working on and with leading edge
technologies. Through circumstances beyond my control in August 1996, I had
to change groups again and moved to the clearVISN Network Management
Engineering group.
Back in '89 I felt that I was joining a legendary company. I felt that if I
worked hard I could excel here and be happy for a long time. I saw no
reason to ever leave. But times change.
My job search started in August (as a direct result of those "circumstances
beyond my control"). I set about my search with very specific criteria and
goals. I sought an opportunity, not just a job. Its taken a while, but I
have found a position which I believe suits me very well both personally
and professionally, and offers a great deal of opportunity.
In eight years at Digital I have been fortunate to work with some great
people (many of whom are still here, and many of whom have left) and on
some great products. I have learned a lot here and made many friends, for
which I am thankful.
Good luck to all that remain, and keep in touch.
Regards,
-Mark H. Granoff
