I upgraded the firmware on an 8200 and an 8400 in a DECsafe environment off the 3.9 CD to V4.8-6 last weekend. The customer now claims that their system is running slow and blames it on the firmware upgrade. The systems are running Unix V3.2G. After reading the release notes I see that V3.2G requires a minimum firmware CD of 3.6, but it is not clear if the firmware off the 3.9 CD is supported with Unix V3.2G. Prior to this upgrade they were running firmware from the 3.8 CD. I have 2 questions: Are there any know issues with the 8x00 firmware off the 3.9 CD? Is the 3.9 firmware supported with Unix V3.2G? I am scheduled to go in this weekend to downgrade to the firmware. This customer wants to run only with officially supported firmware. If I have to downgrade, I want to downgrade to the last officially supported version. Right now according to the info I have the 3.6 CD is the last supported version. This is older than what they had, but the situation has turned political. Now to cover themselves, they will only allow officially supported firmware. Thanks, /Mike Gambardella

There are no known problems with the 3.9 CD firmware. Yes, the firmware is supported to run V3.2G. Why do you think it was the firmware? Is it a booting issue? or a runtime issue? WHAT is RUNNING SLOW? how to you know? -Nigel | |||||

Re: -1 The real issue was the release notes only showing support for Unix 4.0B The customer worked with the CSC to troubleshoot the system running slow problem. The CSC engineer asked what changes had taken place recently and along with the software work the customer did, they mentioned the firmware upgrade. The CSC engineer checked the V0A Firmware Release Notes and noticed that it only listed support for Unix 4.0B. The customer then took issue with the fact that I put them in what looked like an unsupported configuration. Anyway, because of the highly politcal nature of the site I escalated this through the proper channels. It was determined that the release notes were wrong and that the firmware off the V3.9 CD is supported with Unix V3.2G. After we resolved the firmware non-issues, everyone could focus on the real problem. We never had to downgrade the firmware once we determined it was supported. Thanks, /Mike Gambardella |
