1181.0. "6 way HP 'K460' ?" by RDGENG::WILLIAMS_A () Thu Apr 24 1997 06:22

    noise in the field about an upcoming 6 way, PA8200 variant of HP's
    K460. Huge Sybase numbers hinted at... About where we might be with an
    EV6 Quad (..er... in over a year or so ?..)

    I'm looking forward to competing with this. Not.

    anyone else bumped into this whilst competing HP recently ?

    This one, if genuine (I've no reason to doubt what my customer tells
    me) is going to hurt.

    Meanwhile, back in Digital we announce yet another 're-arrange the
    deckchairs' re-org....

    PRODUCTS, PRODUCTS...

    Hullo ?!

1181.1oh dear, its realRDGENG::WILLIAMS_ATue Apr 29 1997 07:445
    confirmed, appears to be shippable in June / July. Called a 570 (I
    think the letter prefix is still K), so I was told. PA8200, but no
    confirmation yet of clock or cache schema.

    pass the onion
1181.2too real now....MINNY::rahel.zuo.dec.com::dolderFri May 23 1997 11:2213
and now it's very real.. for details see HP's web site.

* K570, 6 x 8200 @ 200 Mhz/ up to 8GB Mem
* V2200, 16 [later 32] x 8200 @ 200 Mhz, 15GB/s crossbar
* HP-UX 11, full 64-bit UNIX

slowly but surely we're surrounded by some quite scalable and powerful machines.

The little bit of good news is that V2200/HP-UX 11 will only ship Q4CY97.
But even from then on it's a long time until we'll ship
our W-class :-) systems.

1181.3At least V-Class is smokeKAMPUS::NEIDECKEREUROMEDIA: Distributed Multimedia ArchivesWed May 28 1997 02:5728
    What I find funny about the V2200:

    	15 Gbyte/sec. crossbar

    If you look at their picture, they have pairs of PA8200 sharing
    a 960 Mbyte/sec. port to the crossbar. The 960 is their marketing
    peak, the real peak is 768 and the achievable STREAM bandwidth
    something like 250 Mbyte. To arrive at their 15 Gbyte/sec. claim the
    are counting the sum of all the meaningless peaks. That box is
    bandwidth limited, even for something as mundane as SPECfp_rate95:

    V-Class Systems Performance Estimates
           # of CPU  SPECrateint95 SPECratefp95
           1		 120		135
           2		 235            270
           4 		 460            500
           8		 910            890
           12		1320           1180
           16 		1680           1350

    For comparison:

    AlphaServer 8400 5/440   12 CPU    1115
    AlphaServer 8400 5/440    1 CPU     153

    So, yes we are bandwidth limited as well, but we can still meet their
    newest (not even shipping stuff) per CPU with older machines.

1181.4another day in the trenches..RDGENG::WILLIAMS_AWed May 28 1997 06:2810
    yeah, V class sounds like noise. I'll let Mr Henning apply the scalpel.

    Re the K 570 - is the cache schema the 'same' as the K460 ?

    Oh, and anyone seen any SPEC figures for a UE10000, let me know...

    V2200 will have PCI I/O, so We might even generate some FUD:
