1160.0. "Power up selftest fail and MCHK 660" by TPOVC::MIKECHANG () Wed Apr 02 1997 23:58

 We upgrade vax7620 into Alphaserver8400 with one CPU (KN7CD,E2061),two MEMORY
 (MS7cc-DH),two IOP (KFTHA & KFTIA),PCI PIU and original XMI PIU. The problem
 is : If we ONLY use 1*CPU (slot 0),1*mem (slot 1) and 1 IOP(slot 8),power-up
 selftest Ok. BUT if We add the 2nd IOP in slot 7 or 6 or any slot,the matrix
 of power-up test will ONLY pass/print ST1 (without ST2,ST3 stage) then machine
 check 660 at this point,the module selftest LED in CPU and 2nd IOP not lid but
 memory and 1st IOP LED is ON. We sure the module is Ok. by use it as the 1st
 IOP. no matter which IOP as 1st IOP,the 2nd IOP failed to add and tring about
 twenties times. try to decode machine check 660 per flow chart in service manual
 ,the sympton like below. Anyone has same experience. very appreciated your
 input,thanks.

1160.1additonal questions/things to try...WONDER::MUZZIThu Apr 03 1997 10:029

    	When you install the second TIOP/ITIOP are you connection anything
    to the "hose" connector...? Does ic_perr_stat have bit #13 set...? Have
    you check the backplane for bent pins...? Have you tried the PCI piu on
    the "good" IOP...?

1160.2Is firmware identical?CALDEC::BOSKLOPPERThu Apr 03 1997 19:2817
    Don't know if it is already fix, but what you have to do is as follows:
    1) one cpu in system. check/upgrade firmware be sure if you list
       you get two lines of firmware status. (second line is arc)
       If not rebuild eeprom for both cpu's, and reboot firmware CD.
       Check again with list command if OK.
    2) remove this cpu and install second CPU, and repeat procedure.
    3) Now install both cpu boards and you should be ok.

      PS check what is mentioned in .1 (bent pins) Don't know how much
      expierence you have with this system, but beginners have always
      bent pin problems. If you have bent pins check also plastic connector
      from board and clear this. The bent pins are usely the most upper
      row, but I have seen them on other rows too.
        Hope this helps and good luck

1160.3problem : bent pins..TPOVC::MIKECHANGMon Apr 07 1997 05:484
    Yes,the pins in slot 8 is bent,One of IOP module is hard to insert that
    will bent the pins again if we correct the bent pins. After correct the
    bent pins and use another good IOP as the 1st IOP,the problem is gone.
    Thanks very much for all of your input.
