1152.0. "When happens when a CPU dies?" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Dan Notov) Thu Mar 27 1997 12:21

A business partner of mine wants to know how a turbolaser or rawhide handles
losing a CPU under DIGITAL UNIX.

I assume that if the primary CPU dies, the system will panic & crash. How
about
if one of the secondary processors die? Also, can the primary be re-assigned
at the SRM level? Or do you need to swap boards from one slot to another.

If any of the CPU's encounters a fatal error (basically anything other
than recovered ECC errors), the system will log the failure and crash.

If a processor is really broken (i.e. if powerup diagnostics fail)
it will be excluded from the configuration on the next boot. If that
processor was the primary, a new primary is automatically selected.
The primary processor can also be selected from the SRM console prompt.

Since most all if not all implementations both for ALPHA, HP RISC, and
SPARC all use write-back cache, if a CPU dies, you now have
non-coherant data. The OS must crash.
