1139.0. "URGENT HELP REQUIRED FOR " PCIAERROR " PANIC" by WARFUT::MELLING () Mon Mar 17 1997 20:50
Hello,
We have an intermittent problem on an AS8200 running Decunix
v3.2c.
The system has started to suffer from PCIAERROR panics, the
system has undergone some work and it is since then that the
problems have arisen.
The customer purchased a DWLPB this required the console upgrading
from 2.2-102 to latest 4.1-6.The next problem was that a kernel
rebuild was required, when this was done the customer noticed that
the time had jumped forward.
It was decided by the customer to de-install the shelf for the time
being at that time the cpu was replaced for latest revision as per
FCO.
Since then we have had intermittent PCIAERROR panics,DECEVENT
indicating a problem with the internal PCI.To this end the ITIOP
was replaced on 13-mar-97 and the system failed again today
with the following :
I would be most grateful for help on the above.

| Greetings,
The pciaerror you are encountering:
ERR 0 x00000101 ERROR SUMMARY
DMA MAP RAM INVALID ENTRY ERROR
is most likely caused by a bug in the operating system and not a
hardware problem.
In order to map 32 bit PCI addresses into the 40 bit TLaser address
space, a set of maping registers is used. When a transfer is set up,
one or more map ram registers are allocated to the transaction. They
are loaded by the OS and one of the register bits, the VALID bit is
set. The OS clears the VALID bit when the I/O transfer is completed
and the map register is returned to the unused register list.
When a device attempts to transfer data to or from TLaser memory,
the HPC (Hose to PCI Controller) checks to see if the Valid bit is set
in the register(s) used. If the Valid bit is not set, the HPC aborts
the transfer and sends an error interrupt up the hose. A PCI Error
entry is built for the binary error log and then the system crashes
(Unix dies with a pciaerror panic and VMS dies with a BUGCHECK in
Kernel Mode).
My first guess is that you are missing a patch somewhere. I'd recommend
that you take this up with the Unix support chain (CSC first and then
Engineering if necessary).
Hope this helps...
Cheers,
-Abdul-
