1099.0. "Remote access problems" by ALBANY::HOLCK () Mon Feb 10 1997 10:39

    I'm having problems with remote dial-in connections to an 8400 at one
    of my customers sites. It's the only digital system at the site and
    network access is restricted. The problem is remote unix/hardware can't
    reliably make connections through the MDS01. When I am onsite test
    dial-ins are done and seem to work fine, but when an actual call is
    logged support can't connect at times.
    I connected a MDS01 remote console to the console port(vt510) and
    have tried several digital 2400 and 9600 baud modems and MDS01's.
    A unix support engineer said he doesn't know of any other 8400's using
    MDS01's and they rarely have connections using MDS01's.
    In note 496 a 1200bd modem was tested and worked ok in the lab. Even a
    9600 baud modem is on the slow side.
    What other options do we have for remote connections? Is there a PCI
    modem that will work in the 8400 with unix 4.0b?

    Thanks!
    Harry

1099.1MDS01 and Unix don't mixSCASS1::TURNERGMon Feb 24 1997 02:429
    We have run into this problem also, one of the main problems is that
    alot of the Unix folks do not have a way getting through the MDS01.
    They are using regular modems to dial-in. When you call into the support
    center to have the MDS01 check out you are getting to the hardware
    folks the do have the compatable hardware to dial-in. About the only
    thing that I can suggest is connect a modem up to a terminal server.
    That's the safest thing to do. I have seen Remote-Unix group crash
    systems when dialing into a MDS01 so I certainly would advise against
    letting them dial-in into the MDS01.
