1096.1 | live wire? | AFW4::CROXON | Peanuts, Popcorn, Consoles anyone? | Mon Feb 10 1997 09:42 | 5 |

Did you check your FDDI connection? Do you have a live wire?
This message surfaces when there is no heart-beat for the
FDDI adapter to detect.

"heart-beat"? You're making FDDI sound like Ethernet. :-)
The user should check the LED on the back of the FDDI adapter. If it's
blinking green, then it means that the cable is disconnected, is bad, is not a
proper crossover, or the FDDI port you're attaching to on the other end is off,
or bad.
If the LED is off, then the adapter is not at a link (un)available state which
could be caused by several things.

Console FW from CD V3.8 ( SRM V4.1 )
I have not tested downgrading FW.
Any hints ?

Did you notice whether the LED came on in the back? With the SC-type cables,
it's very easy to have the transmit and receive fibers swapped.

1096.5 | led's flashing | STKAI1::JKJELLBERG | | Mon Feb 10 1997 19:24 | 6 |
| Green LED's are flashing at both ends.
I reverse the cables in the other end.
It's a point to point connection,just the fibercables between
the DEFPA's.

1096.6 | not likely a cable problem. | IB004::DELGADO | Jorge Delgado @ZQO | Tue Feb 11 1997 02:40 | 8 |

Hi,
It doesn't seem to be a cable problem, for if we downgrade the cpu it
works fine.

1096.7 | FW ?? | STKAI1::JKJELLBERG | | Tue Feb 11 1997 11:34 | 10 |
| re .6
I agree,there seems to be something with FW.
I can't downgrade to lower than 4.04 since I'm using
5/440 cpu's.
I tested 4.04 but the result was the same.
Please,anyone else who can bring some light over this problem.

1096.9 | V4.8-6 on the net ? | STKAI1::JKJELLBERG | | Thu Feb 13 1997 09:10 | 4 |

1096.10 | still the same problem | STKAI1::JKJELLBERG | | Mon Feb 17 1997 13:26 | 14 |
| Hi again.
Sorry,FW V4.8-6 didn't fix the problem.
I'm also running V3.10 on the DEFPA's.
When system initializes it finds fta0 and fta1
and the error messages are gone but init doesn't even
try to start up the link with this new FW,( as it did with V4.1-6 )
Later in the boot the link tries to start,but as before,there is
this steady flash.
Please, HELP !!!

1096.11 | depends of slot # | STKAI1::JKJELLBERG | | Wed Feb 26 1997 10:43 | 20 |
| I have managed to get the defpa's to work.
It seems that there is some configuration limitations in the DWLPB.
The defpa's-aa will only work properly in the 4 middle pci-slots.
I used the fibercable as loopback and the link didn't come up
if the defpas's were in slot 0-3 and 8-11 !!
Slots 4-7 were OK !!
When I tested between the systems I noticed that if defpa's were in
slot 0-3 or 8-11 in BOTH systems the link was UNAVAIBLE.
If I put ONE of the defpa in slot 4-7 in one of the systems and the
other defpa in ANY slot in the other system , link was AVAILABLE.
any ideas about this ??

1096.12 | No DEFPA Slot Restrictions in DWLPB! | PROXY::SHORTIS | | Thu Feb 27 1997 11:35 | 7 |
| There are no DEFPA slot restrictions on the DWLPB. The DWLPA did have
a restriction that required the DEFPA to be installed in the upper
4 slots. For some reason you made the system work but not resolved the
root cause of the problem. Did you try a new DWLPB?

1096.13 | Two bad DWPLB's ?? | STKAI1::JKJELLBERG | | Mon Mar 03 1997 08:15 | 7 |

I don't think swapping DWLPB will fix the problem,
since symptom are the same in BOTH systems.
