You have an 8200 with 2 processors (does that mean 2 CPU modules or
1 dual CPU module?) If it is a 4 CPU system (2 duals) you have no
choice but to upgrade memory as your out of slots. If the curtomer
wants to double memory, simply upgrade via simms to 1 gig from 512
Mb on your current modules. or replace the 2 512's with 2 2 gigs.
There is a FC0 (see 618 and 748) to update the early 300's with
a new EV5 and ADG asic to remove this restriction. Depending upon
the date code of the module, you may not have this restriction with
your current modules.
I will ask Howard Drobner to post a note as to which REV 300
Mhz module is ok and which rev needs to be upgraded to remove the
restriction

1092.2 | TWO CPUS IN A SINGLE SLOT | CHEFS::GALLAGHER_D | | Thu Feb 06 1997 19:13 | 26 |
| Thanks for your response.
My customer has a very recent AlphaServer 8200 5/300 with:
a. Two processors in a single slot.
b. Two 512MB memory modules - two more slots.
Therefore we have two slots left.
The "short term" restriction says that only two modules (two slots) can
be used for memory and that they must both be the same size.
My concern is that without replacing boards my customer can only
upgrade to a maximum of 2GB of memory (1GB per slot after upgrading
the existing 512MB modules to 1GB).
Does your reference to FCOs and removal of the restriction mean that
after the FCO is applied the spare third slot can be used for more
memory and that a 2GB board can be installed if needs be?
Furthermore, is there any likelihood of the 4GB board being supported
on AlphaServer 8200 5/300s please?
Thanks very much

Don't forget the I/O module, KFTHA and KFTIA each uses a slot.

Re.: Module Revision.
If the E2056-DA is at Revision P09 or later, then the FCO has been
applied and memory restictions don't apply.
E2056-CA (single CPU) needs to be H08 or later.

| Thanks again, and thanks to Les for pointing our my arithmetic errors
on numbers of slots.
I wrote my original notes late at night!
