Our site ran for a month and then lost a 440 board in the second system in this VMScluster. Since early January, it has been a nightmare of one "DOA" board after another out of Logistics. MCS even swapped backplanes thinking "this many boards could not possibly be bad". The local MCS office indicates this is not the only site in the their office with the same or similar problem. We are wondering if we should ask MCS to fall back to 350's? CHAMP/FLD CAPE # 7CJB11140 U S POSTAL SERVICE CC: 7CJ I'm even getting to the point of thinking there is one apparently "good" board that "has an attitude" and won't work with other "in spec" boards"! | |||||

Well, We're running 2 12-cpu'd 440Mhz 8400's now for a couple of months. One of these was upgraded from 350Mhs, and one was upgraded-from-350 -upgraded-from-300 (this project needs the fastest H/W around). As soon as the 440's were out, we got them. At a point in time the delivery was delayed because the installation instructions leaflet wasn't ready yet, so we told them to send the cpu's anyway..... (nothing about failures) We've had our problems allright... some memory CRD's, PCI boxes (the usual on Turbolaser-if I can find the fellow who designed the nuts-n-bolds of the PCI-box for Tlaser I'll explain him gently that Tlaser is NOT a PC or laserprinter, flame off), but back to the topic here: NO CPU FAILURES. These 440's (all 12 dual cpu modules) are running without problems so far. So I suspect something els is biting the "base-noter" here. Just wanted to add some real life data on a significant number of 440 cpu's in here. From my point of view there is no MFG issue. Btw: the stuff over here is running DUNIX, not VMS. We have 8400's running VMS, but they are 300's (upgraded 7000's) and 350's (new out of the box). The upgraded 7000 are XMI-machines (hence no PCI box problems, REALLY problem free machines), the 350's aren't here long enough to give you any meaningfull failure data. Cheers, Bart Rietkerk-MCS Hoogeveen-Holland. |
