178.0. "Need NOS or good used Air Cleaner; HELP!!!" by BSS::BUSSARD (In Too Deep to Touch the Bottom) Tue Aug 13 1996 13:53

Anyone got any ideas, or secrets on where to find a CA. style
(NOS w/smog..) air breather for a '64 SS Impala, 4bbl?
I'm currently doing the Hemmings thang, done the Year One thang to
no avail., but am open for ideas.
Took the ol' lady out to dinner at night in the nice car, BIG MISTAKE,
'cause they got the hubcaps, at $378.00 a set, and the yet to be
replaced stock air cleaner.
FYI: this 4bbl, single snorkel air cleaner is a _closed positive_
crank ventilation system, with a tube coming up into the rear of
the breather, the tube being capped off at approx. 2" with a tight
wire mesh cap, kinda looks like a "death cap" mushroom. This is 1
year prior to PCV valves, which came in the '65 model year. The mesh
cap is described as a "flame arrestor" on page 125 of Year Ones' Impala
catalog. The other end of the tube comes out the bottom rear of the air
breather, then about 2" down makes about a 33 degree left bend (pass.
side) to connect to the crankcase breather tube. Remember?
I forgot to bring the Chevy stock # and or interchanges from the
interchange book, but can get it if that will help me find this hard
to replace part.
Thanks!
Rob

Thanks for all the replies!
I found the air cleaner at American Pie Classics in Arizona
@ $75.00 for a good used. Soooooooo, I guess I'll get that
one and restore it, or should I just _get_ it restored since the
insurance is paying for it? Kudos to Hagerty Insurance! :^}
Later,
Rob
