I know this doesn't class as a muscle car but I was told that there are
are a lot of mechanical folks in this conference that may be able to
help me out. Please move this note if it is not posted correctly.
Thanks John.

Note 581.0 [79 Firebird Engine Swap] No replies
ABLE::WITHERS 27 lines 30-MAR-1993 12:06
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I currently own a 79 Firebird with a 301 V8 installed. The engine is a
little tired now, but runs reliably. With the price of buying a new car
I have decide that I may just hang on to what I have, and get it fixed
up. In new Mexico we don't have to worry about rust, so its worth
spending some bucks as the car is solid. I had a couple of questions
that hopefully someone out there can answer.
1. I am thinking of replacing the engine with a 350 chevy as I want to
get some performance bolt ons (301 has zip available). Has anyone done
a swap like this before and how much work is involved. I know I need
a new tranny but is that all, does the prop shaft hook up okay.
2. I was looking at the Edelbrock performer series of bolt ons. A cam,
intake manifold, 600cfm carb and cam. I would probably put headers on
as well. Any ideas what sort of HP, I am talking about with this sort
of kit on a 350 chevy, I would like 220-250.
3. Does anyone know what the 0-60 time/fuel consumption for the 301
(140 H.P) firebird is. This will help me guess how tired the engine
is.
Thanks in advance
John

Do you have an automatic or standard transmission?
Buy an early '70s Camaro with a 350, as a parts car, if it's banged up, good,
it'll cost less. Yank the engine, and keep all peripherals, like starter,
alternator, brackets, PS pump, engine mount brackets, pullies, wiring harness,
fan, etc.,,,, Then junk the car.
Get a new heavy duty radiator.

Check out some old issues of Hot Rod, they cover they Edelbrock engine, or
call Edelbrock yourself. The HP will depend on which cam, and what compression
ratio also.

It will be twice what you expect, regardless of what you expect. ;-)

It might just also tell you how much out of tune the engine is, so don't go
by that.
Best of luck,
Matt

I'm pretty sure the starter location is on the other side of the block
for the Chevy engine. I know the bellhousing or front of the
transmission is totally different. Have you considered that Pontiac
V8's of that vintage didn't require an air pump, but Chevies did? Is
there a problem with dropping in a 350 Pontiac engine instead of a
Chevy. Some Pontiac 350's are pretty potent, they have a lot of good
factory speed stuff, and there is a lot of aftermarket stuff also. In
my mind, it would be a lot simpler to stay with a Pontiac block unless
I had the 350 Chevy on hand.

I'll second that. Stick with the Pontiac engine. Why go through all
of that trouble unless you're going to really go ballistic. It sounds
like you just want a simple, clean engine with a few modifications. If
that's correct, then save yourself the headaches of going over-board.
You can get what you want/need to modify the Pontiac engine with a lot
less trouble of a major swap.

Another thing, if you go with the headers, DON'T go and purchase the cheapo Mr. Basket dual exhaust kit. It will provide you with hours of frustration and problems with rust. Go to an exhaust pipe bender and have a custom set made up from real steel tubing, not the recycled, precorroded crap. Matt | |||||
