2843.1 | neat idea, Tom! | EZ2GET::STEWART | the leper with the most fingers | Wed Feb 12 1992 22:35 | 6 |

That's an interesting thought...how would you do this in this context?
Maybe an online MIDI file???

2843.2 | A different twist | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Thu Feb 13 1992 08:57 | 14 |
| Coincidentally, I'd had a similar idea- the basic difference being that I was
thinking of a "MIDI jam" where folks would add *tracks,* but each would be
full length (including the "base" tracks).
Up for discussion would be control issues, such as whether any and all would add
tracks at will, or the original poster would retain "artistic control" and
make all "editing" decisions.
Of course, Tom's idea *is* a different one; I don't mean this reply to cast
aspersions on it. Heck, maybe the two processes could be "intertwined," with
"joint thematic development" followed by "collaborative arranging." (Whoooops,
my penchant for polysyllabic verbiage runneth amok yet again...)

2843.3 | ?did we do this? or did I dream it? | TOOK::MCPHERSON | Scientific progress goes 'Boink!' | Thu Feb 13 1992 10:42 | 11 |
| re .2
Am I having a flashback, or didn't this exact sort of thing get proposed a
couple of years ago? Not saying it's a not a good idea, but I don't remember
if anything ever came of the proposal...
Maybe I'm getting it confused with the SGU 'orchestra' thing that was proposed
a while back....
A mind is a terrible thing.

I think this a very interesting idea. Let me rephrase that, it's a
facinating idea. I am trying to anticipate how something like this
might sound.

| Well, there was a made-for-Commusic joint project from Mr. Edd Cote,
Mr. len fehskens, et moi, called the Three Piece Suite. Unfortunately
a) it was too long, and b) it was too long. Each of us did our section
(the vest, for example, was mine) in isolation, then Edd compiled the
sections on cassette. Languishing in deserved obscurity, though good
for a laugh.
In any committee product, the artistic value diminishes in direct
proportion to the number of contributors..

2843.8 | COMMJAZZY | COMET::BELLMJ | The ImperialStar | Fri Feb 14 1992 02:05 | 14 |
| There was something mentioned when I first started (gawd, five years
now?), and that was to have everyone hook up their SGU's etc. for one
big orchestra, with one MC500 controlling slave sequencers and stuff,
but that didn't go anywhere either. I think some of the people here
realize what it's like to be a system manager, and MIDI is a networking
nightmare anyway.
As a side note, I picked up Dave Weckl's solo album "Master Plan."
Some songs actually sound like the idea first proposed...ie, everyone
make up a part and let's cram it together. It was difficult to follow
at first, but I really love it (my point being that if this idea came
about it would probably turn into a wonderful jazzy/fusion piece).

| Funny, my first impression of "Master Plan" was that it sounded like
a ROM demo for a Whizbang 1000+....

It's subtler than that.. Steve Gadd is the Drum Godd on many Steely Dan
productions.. thus the 'Gadd, Weckl can drum' comment..

| Ok.
I'm assuming that you know Steve and Dave share the title track to
Dave's "Master Plan"--Dave takes the left side and Gadd takes the
right.
Otherwise, Eddddddd made an amazing little pun/ironic
statement/funny/whatever.

| Weckl and Gadd are the epitomeof drumming.
I'm very familiar with the "Master Plan" CD, having spent a good
part of the weekend on a transcription of "Festival De Ritmo"...
